The Slushoverse Theory: The Shared Realities of J.J. Abrams!

It feels like we are always talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or the DC Extended Universe, or whatever new series in development with a “shared universe” idea has hit the webs this week.

After the success of the MCU, it was no surprise to see some of their work with a shared universe emulated by other franchises and studios. However, it’s easy to forget that while the MCU has basically perfected the idea, they were not the first studio, series, or franchise to dabble with a shared universe.

So today, we will be discussing one of the most interesting yet relatively unknown shared universes out there, and how it relates to other theories that we have seen over the years. Today we will be examining J.J. Abrams, Star Wars, Lost, and a number of other franchises that theoretically exist in the same cinematic universe.

Welcome to The Slushoverse Theory.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Villains – Keaton’s Back In, D’Onofrio Rumored?

While I’m sure we all had a favorite scene from the recently released Captain America: Civil War, everyone can agree Tom Holland’s debut as the web-swinging Spider-Man was a shining moment. Not only was it great to see Spidey in the MCU for the first time, but this appearance also was a delightful treat for any fan of the classic Spidey so many of us grew up with.

Now, considering some of the rumors we’ve been hearing about Marvel/Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, this isn’t the only treat for classic fans we’ll see. Most of what we know so far is unconfirmed rumors or fan-driven leaks, but we’ll cover some of these today.

Doctor Strange: Benedict Wong Cast As Wong!

In a tale of two Benedicts, we’ve finally seen the addition of a key role in the story of Marvel’s Dr. Stephen Strange. Joining the cast of Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange  is Benedict Wong, playing the Doctor’s most trusted ally and companion, Wong.

Benedict Wong was most recently seen in Ridley Scott’s The Martian and Prometheus, as well as Netflix’s Marco Polo. He’ll be joining his other namesake Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role, alongside Rachel McAdams, Scott Adkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amy Landecker, and Mads Mikkelsen in an unrevealed villainous role (which is more than likely the demonic Dormammu).

Ben Mendelsohn Joins the Cast of Ready Player One

We haven’t heard too much about the adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One following the news that Steven Spielberg would be directing the film. On the heels of that announcement we learned Spielberg was hoping to pull Gene Wilder out of retirement for a specific role, but nothing really solidified there.

Now we have word that Ben Mendelsohn has joined the cast as the villainous Nolan Sorrento. Mendelsohn has been impressing lately with roles in The Dark Knight Rises,  Mississipi Grind, his excellent turn on Netflix’s Bloodline, and a role in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Tale.

X-Force: Possible Team Lineup Revealed?

Are you excited for Deadpool? I know I am, and most people I talk to certainly are excited as well. Here’s the thing though. With the rise of Deadpool came something of a casualty as well that most people aren’t thinking about – The Death of X-Force.

Maybe death is a little premature. After all, we are here to talk about some concept art from the film that finally reveals the team we might have seen on the big screen, but let’s back up.

deadpool-poster-4A cinematic adaptation of X-Force first began gaining some traction when it was revealed that Jeff Wadlow would be writing and directing the X-spinoff for Fox. His script was praised by both Mark Millar – who Wadlow worked with on Kick-Ass 2 – as well as X-Force creator Rob Liefeld. There were rumors about the film and the five-person team we might see, and news was starting to drop in pretty fast.

Then the Deadpool test footage leaked, the Internet exploded, and Fox changed gears a bit. Suddenly Deadpool was finally happening and Ryan Reynolds was happy again. Unfortunately all X-news then focused on either the main trilogy of films (which we can expect to conclude with the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse) or the two new buzz-worthy spinoffs with Deadpool and Gambit.
