It’s been a little while since we’ve heard any news about Captain America: The First Avenger, so I was happily surprised to see 3 new character teaser posters released. They feature Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/ Captain America, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, and Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt/ Red Skull.
So first we get to see Evans in full on ‘Battle Damaged’ Cap mode. And as much as I want to rip on Evans, I just can’t do it anymore. I think it looks great. Maybe not as Superhero-ish as we’re used to, but that’s the point. This is Wartime Cap, not Avengers Cap. It’s already been said that he gets a new costume for Whedon’s The Avengers, so right now I am perfectly fine with the look of the costume. Especially the shield, that’s just electric dynamite. I want one.
This is one of the better looks we’ve seen of the Red Skull, which I have no doubt Hugo Weaving is going to play masterfully. I mean, this is what he does. And I gotta say that he looks pretty great. They definitely went full on into this, not afraid to Red Skull the shit out of him. Good for them , don’t be afraid of the material. In the 90’s movie, he had the Red Skull for like 20 minutes, and then he was just an Italian guy with a bad surgery job.
And finally we see Atwell as Peggy Carter, Freedom Fighter and Cap’s love interest. And I gotta say, Hayley is really pulling off the 1940’s temptress, she makes that uniform look good. And the cool thing about this character is this might not even be the last time we see her. In the comics an older Peggy Carter actually served as part of the support staff to The Avengers, so that could be a cool little addition to future Cap or Avengers movies. Or not…
I am definitely getting more and more excited for this movie, especially since it’s the last “chapter” in the lead up to The Avengers. Here’s what I really want to know, though. When are we going to see some more of Arnim Zola (Played by Toby Jones)? How big of a role is he playing in this film? There has been little talk for such a potentially huge character that may have slipped under most people’s radar. I guess we’ll just have to wait.
Captain America: The First Avenger marches into theaters on July 22, 2011.
