‘Man of Steel’: Up, Up and Official Trailer!

Well, the moment we have all been waiting for is finally here! No, not Christmas. No, not the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. No, not the 9 minutes of footage from Star Trek Into Darkness playing before The Hobbit. I’ll just tell you, since there is obviously a lot of things we are all waiting for right now. It’s the release of the official trailer for Man of Steel! We have only really seen two teasers so far, with very little footage revealed, so this trailer opens everything up a bit more.

Enough yapping, let’s watch the trailer:

Okay, I now have to go wash my Superman undies. I have to say this trailer got me pretty stoked for the film. It hit on a lot of very cool moments and it looks like Zack Snyder took a very interesting approach to the character and ran with it. When the movie first began production with him at the helm, there was a lot of talk of the studio wanting to make the character “darker” to match the success of Nolan’s Batman franchise, but what really shows through here is the attempt at making it more real.

One of my favorite scenes/quotes from the trailer

Some of the cool moments we see are Clark growing up and learning to deal with his powers, and the fact that he has to hide who he really is from everyone around him. Some of the scenes shown between Clark and his parents really seem to emphasize the role they play in his upbringing, which is a huge factor in determining who Superman is, much like the absence of that determines who Bruce Wayne becomes over in that other guy’s trilogy.

It looks like we’ll see a much more physical Superman than we have previously, which is something fans have been waiting to see for a long time. While not showing too much from our first real trailer, we can clearly see Supes getting thrown around, engaging in battle with another flying man (presumably Michael Shannon as Zod), and the powerful effect behind Supes launching himself into flight. Cavill looks perfectly suited to properly bring this physical Superman to life on the big screen, and I am excited to see his portrayal.

Another great thing the trailer does is introduce us to some of the other cast, like Laurence Fishburne as Perry White (briefly), and Amy Adam as Lois Lane (also briefly). Russel Crowe as Jor-El and Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van (Kal-El’s parents) make a quick appearance, and we see some other alien-y type stuff appearing on Earth. Again one can only assume this has to do with Zod and his crew. Another interesting thing shown is the fact that Supes is in the Artic with some sort of Super USB drive (What? That’s what it looks like, and I want one) that may lead to the development of the Fortress of Solitude and connection with his true father, much like the original film starring Christopher Reeve.

Popovich wanted me to describe how awesomely terrifying Michael Shannon’s bowl cut is…

We have some brief flashes of the costume, nothing too in depth and nothing we haven’t really seen in the previous teasers. It looks pretty regal with the long cape and dark colors, and I think will look pretty good on the big screen. As long as its not 3D. Man, I hate 3D. What else can I say about this trailer except how excited I am for this movie? Next summer seems like a long time to wait, but it’s really not that bad when you think about. We have a pretty big year of movies to look forward to next year, as long as the world doesn’t end before then.

  1. I remember when I saw the first teaser, I was so moved by it I said, “It was so striking, so magnanimous to see him portrayed in such a visually extravagant way, that it left me speechless. It was like seeing GOD right in front of you on the screen, and you were so awestruck you had no way to describe how you felt.”

I felt that way again while watching this trailer.

    …Yeah I REALLY like Superman.

    1. Yeah, I also enjoy Superman. Maybe not quite at that level, but this trailer kicked a lot of ass. Summer 2013 can’t come quick enough.
