The long-troubled film Jane Got A Gun looks to finally hit theaters and the first trailer just dropped today. Check out Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton in full-on, Western revenge mode.
Portman produced and stars as the titular Jane, whose husband (Noah Emmerich) turns up half-dead after a run-in with an outlaw gang (led by Ewan McGregor). In desperation, she turns to an old acquaintance (Joel Edgerton) for help protecting her farm and family.

It’s hard to think of a production as recently troubled as Jane Got A Gun (except maybe another little Western called The Revenant). The film was originally going to star Michael Fassbender as the protagonist (Edgerton’s role now) and Joel Edgerton as the baddie (now, McGregor), then Edgerton stepped in as the protagonist when Fassbender left the project and Jude Law took over Edgerton’s baddie role. After that switch, director Lynne Ramsay dropped out as did Law, and was replaced by Bradley Cooper who…guess what? He dropped out too. Finally Ewan McGregor stepped in and Warrior director Gavin O’Connor took over directing. All the while, Natalie Portman was attached the whole time.
After all the trouble and the years in production, the film doesn’t look half-bad. In fact, it looks to be quite promising when it comes to a straight-on genre film. Give me Natalie Portman in the lead-saddle of anything and I’ll tune in and given this is her first lead since No Stings Attached and Your Highness, I think we’re due for a good Portman vehicle.
“Jane Got a Gun” centers on Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman), who has built a new life with her husband Bill “Ham” Hammond (Noah Emmerich) after being tormented by the ultra-violent Bishop Boys outlaw gang. She finds herself in the gang’s cross-hairs once again when Ham stumbles home riddled with bullets after dueling with the Boys and their relentless mastermind Colin (Ewan McGregor).
With the vengeful crew hot on Ham’s trail, Jane has nowhere to turn but to her former fiancé Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) for help in defending her family against certain destruction. Haunted by old memories, Jane’s past meets the present in a heart-stopping battle for survival.
Relativity Media had originally scheduled the movie to be released on September 4, The Weinstein Company has now taken over and will release Jane Got a Gun on December 31.
