Mel Brooks has always been the master of satire. From classic comedy ventures like The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Men in Tights, he has always managed to tickle my funny bone. But one film in particular always got the giggles out of me more than any other, because it melded my favorite movie with his comedic skills. That was Spaceballs.
Spaceballs had it all, zany humor, delicious parodies of then topical events and John Candy with a tail eating dog biscuits. But what really sticks in your head is Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, and his never-ending quest to not muck anything up, and constantly failing due to the ineptitude of himself and his crew. With Star Wars fever at its highest after the storming success of The Force Awakens, the time would be right for a return of The Schwartz.
Luckily for us then that Mel is having similar thoughts. Mel himself on the Take A Knee podcast confirmed that he is currently in the very early planning stages of a sequel, humorously enough called Spaceballs: The Search for More Money.
Now there are a few key problems that may arise. Disney owning the Star Wars franchise could Mel get away with as much as he did in the 80s? With John Candy sadly deceased, who if anyone, would play Barf? Dark Helmet star Rick Moranis has been mostly retired for years now, would he come back one more time to play the short, black clothed one?
Never the less this is still pretty cool news for fans of the original. Hopefully Mel still has it in him to knock up a great satire piece and this will not go the way of Ted 2 and Dumb and Dumber To, losing the thing that made the original films so great, their humor and personality.
