New 24 Series Gets Greenlight…Minus Jack Bauer

The Jack Bauer Power Hour is back! Minus the Jack Bauer!

That’s right boys and girls, it looks like Fox is getting back on the 24 bandwagon with the new 24: Legacy series just being ordered to pilot. However, this won’t be the good old 24 that we’ve all grown accustomed to in the last decade and a half. This one will have two new leads and NO recurring original characters. That’s right, it looks like Jack Bauer hasn’t returned from Russia yet.

24: Legacy will have a brand new protagonist named Eric Carter, a former war hero on his way home, but ends up bringing some trouble back as well. Enter the Counter Terrorist Unit, also known as our good friends CTU. They not only help him, but also assist in the next catastrophic potential disaster that might befall America. In an effort to further distance away from the previous iteration, Fox has initiated casting Eric Carter as either African-American or Latino, and they are searching for a female lead as his partner throughout this series, who is described as a former head of CTU. Again, no original characters are coming back to star so you can cross off Chloe O’Brien, much to our chagrin. However, Fox did say we might get some mention or even pictures of previous CTU comrades in the background. Because, of course, that’s the same.

The format will be more like 2014’s 24: Live Another Day with 12 episodes encompassing 24 hours, because Fox TV Chairman and CEO Dana Walden says that, “I don’t think any of us believe that a 24-episode arc in this day and age is the way to go.” One can tell that Fox really wants to bring 24 back, but make it different enough that new viewers can jump into the idea and format without the weight of previous chapters and canon to learn along the way. Distancing itself might be a strong statement, but it seems that Fox wants to revive the 24 name and give it a brand new identity.

Of course, we have to see if the show gets the greenlight past pilot stage, but with some of the original 24‘s executive producers, Howard Gordon, Manny Coto and Evan Katz, behind it and Fox’s ambition for the name, I can’t imagine that we won’t see what this new CTU and new heroes will be doing to save us heading into the next television season.
