Why Manny Pacquiao Should Call it a Career

(Featured Photo Credit: Eric Jamison/AP)

I am very well aware of the words that I am typing will garner attention amongst my countrymen and family as being blasphemous and outrageous but I think we cannot ignore the signs. He is a hero in the Philippines, the fighting Congressman of the Sarangani Province. He is the cultural icon that has wonderfully represented the motherland and he is the poster boy of graciousness and humility. But as a fan and admirer of the Pac-Man, I think it’s time to face the facts that are in front of us: Manny Pacquiao should retire and begin the next phase of his life as congressman and full-time ambassador.

The above image is only one of the reasons why I think Manny needs to reassess his boxing career. Despite being only 33 years old, Manny Pacquiao has already fought in 61 professional bouts. He has been fighting constantly for the better part of two decades and the last few years, the results are starting to show his age. He has become more showman and entertainer than boxer. His last few fights never really challenged him like Marquez always does. Joshua Clottey was buried in his defensive shell, Mosley never bothered to engage Manny, Bradley gave up on the fight halfway through (and won despite the sheer absurdity of the result), and Margarito’s face was rearranged by Pacquiao’s swift justice. All of them were carried in their fights by Manny because he wanted to deliver a “good fight”. I think Manny had gotten obsessed with the idea of entertainment and people getting their moneys worth. He could’ve easily taken them down earlier, like the Hatton bout, but felt compelled to give a good fight for the audience and the several million viewers watching pay-per-view. With Bradley, he had shown his complacency and whether you believe the outside vices or influences had taken its toll on him, I think he became more entertainer than boxer at the moment and let up in the final few rounds. After that controversial loss, he wanted to prove to the world that he was still the great Manny Pacquiao and preached his rededication to knock the snot out of Marquez to settle the argument on who was the better fighter in their rivalry. However, all it took was the overconfidence and his idea of just flipping a switch for him to walk into the right hand of Marquez.

Don’t get me wrong, Marquez won the fight fair and square with his intelligence and new found power and strategy. He knew Pacquiao was going to try for the kill after his face collected blood and welts from the vicious lefts Manny was dealing and used that aggressiveness to his advantage to put down Manny twice Saturday evening. Marquez is a brilliant counter-puncher and deserves every bit of recognition for his game plan to win this fight. I also feel that Manny does not have that same focus required to score wins in his boxing matches. Manny’s aggressiveness is both his biggest weapon and his biggest weakness. He’ll win the first half the bout as he racks up punches but he seems to get bored and obsessed with keeping the fight going and rests on his earlier body of work than finishing the job in the end. Maybe it’s just more than fighting style at this point. Yes, you can count on punches landing and hitting but age takes its toll on a man’s speed and power and they have been lacking recently for the pound-for-pound king. While he can still dish it out with some of the best in boxing, I doubt that he can keep this up any longer because let’s face it, he has nothing really to prove at this point. He did admit to his overconfidence after the fight but that does little to quell the critics in their assessment of his eroding skills and seemingly apathetic approach in the ring. Plus, forget about the super-fight with Floyd Mayweather. Floyd has ZERO reason to fight him and probably never will. Floyd would have nothing to gain from defeating someone on the downturn of their career. Yes, three years ago it would’ve been the fight of the century but now its only mention reeks of greed, ego and missed opportunities.

We also can’t forgot about the other job he carries: Congressman of the people of his province in the Philippines. He wants to do what is best for his fellow countrymen and knowing how deep the poverty runs in the Philippines and how corruption has dominated the Philippine political system, he has made his true passion his political career. It has taken over his boxing career and it’s good that he still goes back to the well on what he does best in the boxing ring but everyone around him knows that he does not want to be just a boxer anymore. His goals as Congressman include getting free education and healthcare to his constituents and he wants back up his words. That involves taking time away from the ring training and working towards his goals as a man of the people. Everyone knows that his heart is more into his country than boxing at the moment. Maybe this is the sign he needs to pursue his new passion in life and redefine why he is the champion to his fellow Filipinos.

Manny Pacquiao has done wonders for the world of boxing and he will go down as the top pound-for-pound champion of the world. No one should deny him the glory of his legacy as he departs into the next phase of his life. Despite his recent losses, there is no reason to hang his head nor should he deliver any excuses because father time has caught up to him. I think a Manny Pacquiao that chases his dream of serving his agenda of a better Philippines will have more impact on himself and everyone that follows him than a fading sports star brimming with overconfidence and too much ego to walk away from the sport that made him who he was. Too many times we have seen boxers struggle and fail to walk away because it becomes their obsession to recapture their dominance in the past. That goes for any sports star for that matter because their biggest competition is always themselves. They fight their own physical and mental deterioration to where they just embarrass themselves because they could not let go of past glory and hang around too long. I want the Manny Pacquiao legacy to live on without any more blemishes because his heart is just not fully in it anymore and he needs to move on.

Do I want Manny to go away? Absolutely not. I enjoy watching him as a fighter and entertainer. I feel proud as a fellow Filipino to see him fight and watching him conquer the boxing world over the last decade added so much to my pride in my second home of the Philippines. However, you can tell his life has changed for a new purpose. He has rededicated himself to God and his faith and eliminated his old vices and bad habits of his life. His wife and family suffered during his career with him letting fame and his meteoric rise guide his way to bad decisions. He has moved past that and reconnected and found his new calling. When Manny Pacquiao does wave goodbye to the world of boxing, the world he has bled and gave all his energy to for the majority of his life, it will be a celebration and everyone won’t think less of him for it for walking away. When he takes off the gloves for the final time and steps into Congress and out into the streets of his province to work towards his new goal and affect change, he will know that boxing will not be the only label to his legacy. What defines him will be the love for his people and the new redefinition and evolution of his role: the true people’s champion.

The 2012 Grammy Nominations Are Out, Apparently a Concert Also Happened?

The 55th Grammy Awards are being given out on February 10th, 2013 so that means we have to have some nominees, right? They definitely accomplished that as the Grammy Nominations concert aired last night and featured performances from Fun., Maroon 5, Hunter Hayes, The Who, Ne-Yo and a couple of country artists who escape me. We also got to see Taylor Swift awkwardly host with LL Cool J so that was fun.

Leading the nominees are Fun., Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean, Jay-Z and Kanye West with six noms each. The Black Keys, Chick Corea and Miguel follow that with five nominations. Notably, Justin Bieber was not hit up for ANY nominations so single tear for that. But that didn’t stop him from making the news as his manager declared the Grammys a travesty because Bieber HAS to be the underdog according to EW.com. Dude, you’re a millionaire teenager that keeps tricking Selena Gomez to go out with you. You’re the opposite of underdog, you’re just a douche at this point if you need a chip on your shoulder. Just be happy you have tickets to the party. Regardless, some highlights have to be Frank Ocean and Fun. just dominated the nominations despite the fact that they were first time nominees. Frank Ocean is great people and you should listen to him.

Also Detroit’s own Jack White gets an Album of the Year nomination for Blunderbuss, which is richly deserved. Alabama Shakes probably cut Carly Rae Jepsen off the Best New Artist and I’m perfectly fine by that.

Mild entertainment at the expense of the Biebs.

There is a cool pattern that Hollywood Reporter noticed and that four out of the five nominees for Album of the Year are rock albums, with Frank Ocean being R&B. No pop nominations in there. Maybe it’s the sign of the times and that everyone is looking for something original out there in the world. No offense to the pop music world, myself being a defender of the pop persuasion despite the shame it brings me, but most of it is the same drivel and more producer based than actual artist based. In fact, pop music is full of entertainers, not musicians so it’s good to see the right people get their due. Speaking of pop music, man did they ever get shut out. Bieber got zero nominations, One Direction got the shaft, and Nicki Minaj got nothing (it’s not rap or hip hop anymore people, she’s gone pure pop). A lot of people are complaining because these artists (or entertainers I guess) sold the most albums out of anyone, they should be nominated right? People, this isn’t the people’s choice awards, or the Billboard Awards for that matter. If the Grammy Awards are trying to set a precedent about actual substance in the music, then bravo. Like I said, these artists/entertainers got nothing because it’s all production work. Yeah, its beautiful escapism but you couldn’t tell me that if they took a random member of One Direction, gave him Bieber’s team and production values, all his marketing and that I would tell the difference between the two? I sincerely doubt it. There were some other snubs like Coldplay, which I buy because as much as I like Mylo Xyloto, this was not as great as Viva La Vida. Lady Gaga was also snubbed as well but I think that also factored in that her last album sort of came off like a fart sound. Also yes, I consider Lady Gaga to be more artist than entertainer just because she does a lot of her own writing and production and has value as a musician, even if some of her songs don’t reflect that.

Anyways, below is a list of the nominees with in some of the major categories and this link will bring you to the full list. Again, the awards are on February 10th, 2013 on CBS so we’ll see if anyone walks away as the new Adele with her gaggle of awards.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Casts Harry Osborn!

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Dane DeHaan. According to multiple sources, such as Hollywood Reporter and EW.com, he’s your new Harry Osborn for this iteration of the Amazing Spider-Man series. He takes over the role that was originated by James Franco in the original Spider-Man Trilogy. He also will probably not sabotage the Academy Awards and star on a soap opera but I’m only venturing a guess at this point.

Back to DeHaan, you might remember him from that unrated Josh Trank pic Chronicle. He played Andrew Detmer, the social outcast turned super emo kid with powers. He turned in a terrific performance in showing his issues and his calm, if not frightening nature as he developed a superiority over others with his powers. He also was in Lawless with Tom Hardy and Shia LeBeouf, which he also did a great job in. Looking even further, you might recognize him from In Treatment and True Blood. He apparently was also ‘Second White Soldier’ in Lincoln so this is definitely the next step up from that.

He appears to be the last of the major castings for the new Spider-Man sequel, with Jamie Foxx slotted in as Electro, Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane and Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone returning from the previous movie. Obviously we all should know that Harry Osborn becomes the heir apparent to his father’s villain alter ego, The Green Goblin, but we have yet to see Norman Osborn so perhaps we might see him sooner than we might think. I think DeHaan will be a good addition to the cast as he definitely comes off as a terrific actor in his previous roles and it will be interesting to see how they tackle the Harry Osborn character. This seems to be running along the same lines as the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series so maybe we’ll see…Hobgoblin? I don’t know but I’m excited with this casting news. More so than the Jamie Foxx casting because Booty Call was just on television the other day and…just wow.

Weekly New Release Report – 12/05/12

We here at Grizzly Bomb want to make sure that everyone knows exactly what’s going on this week in pop culture so we’ve decided to add yet another weekly segment. Here we will update you on what’s coming out this week on DVD/Blu-Ray, music, gaming and what’s in theaters to make sure you don’t miss out any of the good stuff. Or if it’s Twilight weekend, what to avoid when you about to head to the theater. We’re calling this the Weekly New Release Report, and our opening one covers the week of December 3rd, 2012. We figure this might help with your holiday shopping ideas so we’ll just do the work for you in gathering the ideas so you can just sit back and order from your computer while you continue to play Call of Duty and avoid the sunlight.

Looking at the list of new releases, I think the big one to look at is obviously The Dark Knight Rises. A great movie in its own right, it’s a must have for people to complete their trilogy. Obviously, it also comes with a trilogy box set so in case you’ve missed any of the past movies, they have that available. We also have the 3D release for Finding Nemo and The Odd Life of Timothy Green for those family-centric viewings you may have in store for the holidays. Just watch out with Timothy Green, that end can be a doozy on kids. The ones I’m psyched for are Brazil, Ninja Scroll and the Francis Ford Coppola Collection. Brazil because the old Criterion is out on Blu-Ray and I dug the movie and it was one of the first Criterion Collection DVDs I owned. Ninja Scroll because it’s nostalgic with my anime days and the Francis Ford Coppola collection because Apocalypse Now on Blu-Ray alone is worth the price of admission. Here’s the full list coming out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week:

The Dark Knight Trilogy

Finding Nemo (Five-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition)

Hope Springs

The Odd Life of Timothy Green

In television DVDs, we have the third season of Eastbound & Down coming out, along with season 15 of The Simpsons for you enthusiasts that still watch the show. Obviously, more importantly, the second season of Star Trek: TNG is out as well so we would hope that you’re picking that up. TV listings… Engage:

Simpsons: Season 15 [Blu-ray]

Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season Two [Blu-ray]

Music:

Here are some options for music. Admittedly, the only one that would garner any interest would be the re-release of the of the Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness, but it’s exorbitantly expensive. I figured to list it for you ready to burn some money from your pocket.

Wiz Khalifa – O.N.I.F.C.

Ke$ha – Warrior

Florida Georgia Line – Here’s To The Good Times

The Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness

Video Games:

The two big releases are Far Cry 3 (which has been getting some great reviews out there) and the Mass Effect Trilogy. If you haven’t played Mass Effect, DO IT NOW. Such a great series to play and it is BioWare at their finest since the Knights of the Old Republic games came out a decade ago.

Far Cry 3

Mass Effect Trilogy

In Theaters This Weekend:

It’s a quiet weekend in theaters before The Hobbit steps into town next week, so we have Deadfall, with Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde and Charlie Hunnam, which looks like a cool movie and they actually made it available for VOD so you can check that out before it hits theaters. We also have Playing for Keeps, which generates a fart sound if anything. Gerard Butler, dude seriously, get a new agent.

Deadfall

Playing for Keeps

That’s it for our brand new segment, and we hope it helped with some of your holiday shopping. We’ll be back next week with more of the Weekly New Release Report!

‘Bates Motel’ Has Some Teasers; Motel Room Sales Decline After Viewings

This seems to be the days of Alfred Hitchcock with his imprint and likeness being reintroduced to pop culture recently with movies and television series abound. We had The Girl, the HBO movie; Hitchcock, the Anthony Hopkins film; and now we have some more awesome news on the new A&E series, Bates Motel.

Now, we haven’t heard too much other than the first details of the Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates as a kid series with Vera Farmiga playing his less decrepit looking mother in her youth, but we at have this first picture to show. Which is awesome because I love the house looming large in the background and it creates such a buzz for me in wanting to watch this series. But that’s not all folks! We also got some teaser trailers for you that show absolutely nothing yet definitely set the tone of (hopefully) what is to come. Shall we take a gander?

http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1&isUI=1

Want more? How about the 2nd teaser?

http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1&isUI=1

So yeah, all you really need is the Inception “BRRHAAAAAMMM” horns and you can make anything epic. Again, it sets a great tone for the series as we try to figure out what about the house makes the people go a little bit….Psycho? Too much? But seriously, looking into the relationship between how the son developed into the adult Norman Bates and the impact of his mother on his future is something we all need to see. With the teasers showing that perhaps the Bates Motel is something not to be trifled with, or at least the family, we might know exactly how dedicated this family is to each other.

Anyways, leave some comments on the bottom or on our Facebook so we can see how excited about this you are or how lame you are if you don’t like Hitchcock. It better be the former because that’s just un-American otherwise. Bates Motel is due in 2013 on A&E.

Jamie Foxx as Electro for Amazing Spider-Man 2? Blame it on the Ah-a-a-Ah-Ah-Alcohol….

According to various sources, such as EW.com and Hollywood Reporter, Jamie Foxx is in negotiations to join The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie as the villain Electro. This comes as a surprise to some because Electro doesn’t exactly bring to mind Jamie Foxx. Maybe it’s because despite his Oscar-winning performance as Ray Charles in Ray, he will always be Sheneneh from In Living Color. It’s still not final but Foxx, ever the showman, decided to tease the masses on Twitter:

Of course, everyone wanted to consult with Marc Webb to see if he would address this new bit of info and he did. Sort of. According to Comingsoon.net, Webb dropped this quote when it was brought up:

“I think Jamie Foxx is electrifying! I think Jamie Foxx is one of the best actors around today. He’s such a great character actor and he’s a really brilliant guy. I would love to work with him and you’ll be hearing more on that shortly, I’m sure.”

Webb goes on to add that the dynamics of Norman Osborn are very important to him and will be a common theme through this franchise’s movies.

“I like Electro, I’m fascinated by Norman Osborn and the different inflections of him. And Harry. Mary Jane and Gwen are always interesting to me. What makes villains interesting to me is what they bring out in Peter. What challenges they provide for him. What’s great about Marvel and other comics is that often there’s a pre-existing relationship… It’s not just about the physical conflict he has, but the emotional ones as well.”

With the new origin story and reboot in the background of the last movie, Webb still feels an obligation to the Spider-Man canon but also feels he can take it to different places and explore different contexts not yet discussed with this iteration of Spidey, not unlike the Ultimate universe in the comic books.

“What’s exciting about moving forward is that, in the first movie, I had to still honor some of the important elements of the origin story. But I also wanted to redefine the context of it because I’m building a different universe than what we’ve seen before. A lot of the nuance is quite different. Now, as we’re approaching the sequel, it’s really exciting because I feel quite liberated. I have a universe that’s my own. I don’t have an obligation to the origin story. It’s pretty fun and exciting and I can dig deeper into the parents.”

Of course, the movie is starting to take shape with this possible casting, as well as the earlier Mary Jane/Shailene Woodley news. It’s interesting that Electro would go this route because obviously Webb wants to show a connection to Garfield’s Spidey, and I figured they would’ve cast someone more age appropriate to connect the generation gap better. I guess we’ll have to see exactly how this character shapes out, and for an official confirmation. There’s also the whole idea that Electro is Caucasian and not African-American, which I think is an absolute non-issue. Character is character and it shouldn’t change performance and how it is projected on the screen. I would like to think we are progressive enough to get past that but time will tell. He is a good actor so it would be interesting to see what he could bring to the table come May 2nd, 2014 when the movie arrives to blow your minds away. Hopefully it will arrive with this suit below.
