Grizzly Review: Conan the Barbarian

In 1932, writer Robert E. Howard created one of the greatest characters in the history American literature – Conan the Barbarian. Most people don’t realize he’s been around that long, commonly associating the character solely with the Schwarzenegger vehicles of the early 1980s. The uneducated masses, which until recently included myself in their ranks, are largely unaware of how in-depth the character’s history is. And now, 27 years after the last Conan movie, the Cimmerian is back on the big screen. And while I was initially underwhelmed by the casting of Jason Momoa, my mood changed after seeing him this season in Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones Scripts Stolen !?!?!?!

George R.R. Martin is seriously going to destroy someone! After his newest book ‘A Dance With Dragons‘ was prematurely leaked over in Germany via Amazon, now he alleges that scripts from season 1 that were being auctioned for charity have been stolen! According to E!, the scripts for the 9th and 10th episodes of Game of Thrones Season 1 were shipped from Belfast safe and sound, but somewhere between there and the U.S. they were stolen! Here’s a little more from E!:

“The US post office delivered the envelope in a plastic baggie with a pre-printed note apologizing for the ‘damage.’ But this was no error in handling. The envelope was torn open at one end, and both scripts were gone,” Martin wrote over the weekend.

“I am convinced the scripts were stolen.”

In keeping with the epic nature of his massive Song of Ice and Fire series, Martin called for fans to take up arms for the Iron Throne keep an eye out for the missing scripts on auction sites and memorabilia shows. The scripts are for the ninth and tenth episodes and are signed by the screenwriter/producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, as well as director Alan Taylor.

So what the hell? Who stole these scripts that were to go to charity? Lannisters? The White Walkers? George R.R. Martin demands answers. Sounds like a plot perpetrated by the USPS to me…. Either way we’ll keep everyone posted if the D-Bags who did this are ever captured and punished. Don’t lose sleep fans!

Game of Thrones Season 2 Casting: Roose Bolton

Roose Bolton, despite being a brilliant tactician is most definitely one of the more creepy characters in the Song of Ice and Fire books. He’s described as a pale, quiet man whose banner consists of a flayed man. Now if you’re curious as to what flaying is when comes to it being performed on a man, it’s when the skin is torn off of the body one layer at a time. It’s a horrific way of torture, the Bolton’s known to let the exposed skin fester and crack after the flaying. Lord Bolton also hold to the medieval tradition of using leeches to keep his blood clean and healthy. And oh yeah, his castle is known throughout the North as the Dreadfort. Very charming indeed.

I had actually thought of David Thewlis of Harry Potter (among other movies) fame being perfect for the role of Roose Bolton but it would look as if they’ve cast someone who definitely holds to the physical description of the Lord of the Dreadfort. Michael McElhatton is an actor that I am not familiar with but he has had many a role in TV shows and movies alike.

It will be much more interesting once the seasons get rolling to see Roose Bolton’s bastard son Ramsay Snow in action and some of the interactions the father and son have in whichever season book 5 happens to be in. Ramsay is one of the most vile characters I’ve seen in the Song of Ice and Fire books and when he makes his way onto the HBO show I think a lot of people will be disgusted with him and actually be clamoring for him to bite the dust at some point. Roose is a sicko bastard because he condones all of Ramsay’s antics and holds him as his only son despite being a bastard. Stay tuned for more Game of Thrones castings as they release!

Game of Thrones Season 2 Casting: Jeyne… But Which One?

Apparently Charlie Chaplin had a granddaughter who is into acting. I never knew that but Oona Chaplin has been cast in the latest season of A Game of Thrones as a character named Jeyne according to Access Hollywood. Now as fans of the books will realize this could mean one of two characters. The first is Jenye Poole, the daughter of a steward of Winterfell that accompanied the Starks to King’s Landing and was held captive after the slaughter of the Northmen. Jeyne Poole makes a lot more sense in the long run since she plays a pretty big role in the fifth book ‘A Dance With Dragons’.

**Spoilers Below**

The other character that she could possibly play is that of Jeyne Westerling, but it wouldn’t make much sense because she doesn’t show up until book 3 ‘A Storm of Swords‘. But it wouldn’t be unheard of for them to add the character in early to move things along. They put in an Arya scene at the end of season 1 that was from book 2 so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they did something similar in season 2. Jeyne is a very important character because Robb Stark marries her after she tends to his wounds in book 3. This proves problematic since he had a marriage agreement with Lord Walder Frey that is now null and void. The whole ordeal leads to one of the most shocking scenes I’ve read in the George R.R. Martin books aside from Ned’s beheading.

I’m betting on her being Jeyne Poole, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see how everything unfolds as filming continues. As always, stay tuned for more casting news!

Game of Thrones Season 2: Even More Casting! Jaqen H’gar

I swear it’s like Chanukah around here lately because there have been multiple castings over the past few days for season 2 of a Game of Thrones. Now, thanks to news from IGN we’ve been graced with the casting of the mysterious yet bad ass character of Jaqen H’gar. H’gar is one of the prisoners that will be accompanying Arya, Yoren and a bunch of scumbags back to the Wall…. if they make it there. I’ll fill in those of you who like spoilers after the jump about H’gar and his background.

Jaqen H’gar will be played by Tom Wlaschiha, another newbie who hasn’t had much of anything besides extra roles in movies. But hopefully he has some potential to be his best in what I think is a pretty big role as far as Arya’s part of the story is concerned.

**SPOILERS**

The character of Jaqen H’gar starts off as a regular criminal, but definitely one to be feared as his dungeon mates are scared to death of him. As it turns out, Jaqen is really one of the Faceless Men. The Faceless are an elite group of assassins operating out of Bravoss with the ability to magically change their faces at will, which is what makes them so adept at getting close to those they choose to eliminate. Jaqen will be a great help to Arya in season 2 and in many way helps forge her future as she moves on through the remaining books/seasons. Can’t wait to see him in action! Be prepared for some more casting that I’m sure will be coming!

Game of Thrones: Season 2 – More Casting! Asha and Xaro

The closer we get to season 2 filming, the more casting announcements we get for Game of Thrones! After having Melisandre, Stannis, Davos, Brienne and Margeary cast, now comes a Greyjoy and a Merchant Prince of the free city of Qarth! The Greyjoy that was cast is Theon’s sister Asha, who’s name was changed to Yara for the show. More on that in a minute. The merchant of Qarth is Xaro Xhoan Daxos, a fella that Daenerys runs afoul of during her travels.

Theon’s sister Yara (Asha) is being played by Gemma Whelan, a relative newcomer in my eyes. The only thing that I’ve seen with her in it was The Wolfman with Anthony Hopkins and Benecio Del Toro, but let’s face it: We’re all trying to forget that movie.

I have no problem with the actress playing Yara (Asha), but I can’t get over the fact that they changed her name to Yara to avoid confusion between Asha and another character, the wildling woman Osha. Really? Are people just assumed to be so stupid that they can’t figure out the difference between two characters with a different vowel to start off their name? Seriously they change it to Yara why? So it can sound almost like Arya? Good call boys, good call. Regardless of the name, I’m very much looking forward to seeing Yara (Asha) making her debut on the show. In the books Asha was a cocky, young, Ironborn girl who is a skilled fighter. She’s definitely not the lady type most daughters of a King would be, but everyone will soon find out that the Iron Islands make up one of the harshest kingdoms in all of Westeros.

Playing Xaro is the actor Nonso Anozie who is also another newcomer, but is in the upcoming Conan The Barbarian movie starring a Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa, who played Khal Drogo in season 1. I wasn’t really impressed with the character in the book. You’ll come to see that characters like Xaro are a dime a dozen by the fourth season.

The cast is growing but as I said before there are still plenty of characters to be cast, most of them secondary and brief characters but interesting nonetheless. Stay tuned as we bring them to you!
