A24 has released a new official trailer for the indie horror film The Hole in the Ground. The film is the feature debut of Irish director Lee Cronin, and is set on the fringes of a backwoods rural town. The Irish horror film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival earlier this month to glowing reviews.
The Hole In the Ground follows young mother, Sarah (played by Seána Kerslake) as she tries to escape her broken past, with her young son Chris. A terrifying encounter with a mysterious hole in the ground (ah, the one from the film’s title!), and a mysterious neighbor, shatters her fragile security, throwing Sarah into a spiraling nightmare of paranoia and mistrust, as she tries to uncover if the disturbing changes in her little boy are connected to an ominous sinkhole buried deep in the forest that borders their home.

Last year at Sundance, A24 nearly traumatized some audience members during their midnight screening of Hereditary, a unique and dividing horror film that ended up being one of the more haunting and thought-provoking films of 2018 (depending on who you ask). Now, only a year later, A24 is back on the festival circuit —and judging by the first trailer and the early reactions around The Hole In The Ground, this is going to be one to keep your eye on when it hits later this March.
Director Lee Cronin revealed the secret of the hole in the ground in an interview with Bloody Disgusting earlier this month, revealing that the whole thing is an impressive CGI concoction.
“It was a combination of a lot of things. There are some real elements in there. There are some shots that are fully real, I suppose, natural things. Some of the closeup shots and some walking shots around the sinkhole. Then obviously there are some visual effects, digital work going on as well. I always tried to extend what’s there or somehow bring as many natural elements into play as well. It’s a bit of a magic trick I suppose.”
“We were using some blue stuff on the ground because there was a lot of greenery there already,” Cronin goes on to say. “We were just kind of smart in how we shot it. We tried to not let that into frame. The joy of the computer now is it’s not even necessary to cover stuff up anymore.”
