Diamantino Is The Most Original, Bonkers, Sci-Fi Bending Comedy Of 2019

Kino Lorber has debuted an official US trailer for directors Gabriel Abrantes & Daniel Schmidt’s one-of-a-kind “high camp” indie comedy, Diamantino.

The film follows the dimwitted Portuguese soccer superstar of the title, who gets swept up in a complicated comic conundrum involving the refugee crisis, Secret Service skullduggery, mad science genetic modification, and a right-wing anti-EU conspiracy. And that’s just skimming the surface of what Diamantino has in store for viewers. There are also giant puppies. Like…a lot of them. Pekingese the size of double-decker buses. The film is glorious lunacy at its best and likely to become a cult classic for its sheer strange audacity.

Check out the trailer for Diamantino below:

Diamantino is co-directed and co-written by filmmakers Gabriel Abrantes (of many short films previously, based in Lisbon) & Daniel Schmidt, both directed Palaces of Pity previously. But it’s worth noting star Carloto Cotta, who gives a truly fine comic performance of recent memory as a not-so-thinly veiled burlesqued version of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese film premiered during the Critics’ Week sidebar at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and later stopped by at a bunch of other major film festivals throughout the world. Yours truly saw the film at TIFF and can attest that it is a truly unique, wacky, comedy that not only blends genres but revolves around bending gender. The film unfolds with lo-fi surrealism and frothy indecency. It’s a sweet film, filmed among bubbles and madness in a modern world, wherein the film simply asks to choose love above all else. Vividly photographed in Super 16mm, Abrantes and Schmidt’s film is one of the year’s most original and infectiously silly comedies, driven by genuine vision, and great B-movie spoofing. You’ll feel like you walked through a hall of mirrors at a funhouse only to come out at the end feeling better than when you went in.

Kino Lorber will release Abrantes & Schmidt’s Diamantino in US theaters starting on May 24th later this month.
