The Old Guard: Charlize Theron Is Netflix’s New Immortal Ass-Kicker

Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for the epic action fantasy movie from director Gina Prince-Bythewood, based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Greg Rucka.

Forever is harder than it looks. Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate & monetize their power by any means necessary.

Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngô Vân, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor round out the cast.  The filmmaker is behind movies such as Love & Basketball and Beyond the Lights had been readying to direct Sony’s Silver Sable & Black Cat superhero movie before it was delayed.

In an interview with EW, co-star Kiki Layne (who had a breakout performance in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk back in 2018) spoke about the film:

“These types of films — especially action films of this size — usually follow a male character, and there are female characters, but they’re just kind of orbiting around whatever his story is. This film [has] the ability to carry two very strong female stories”

While director Prince-Bythewood added:

“They are warriors. [I wanted] to be able to reframe what it means to be a female with this film and make that a normal thing: our toughness and badassness and courage. To normalize that was really important to me.”

Theron notably injured her hand while filming the movie, which led her to have to wear a cast for a while. Back in October, the actress explained her injury on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “I did an action movie and I tore the ligament off the bone fighting,” she said. “Everybody kept saying, ‘This is probably serious,’ and I was like, ‘We can’t talk about that right now. We just have to keep going because what are we going to do? We have three more weeks to shoot. We’ve got to get through it.’” So look for The Old Guard to really push the actress to some ass-kicking heights.
