Neon has revealed the first teaser trailer for the ultra-violent, utterly freaky new sci-fi horror film Possessor, the latest film from filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg.
Possessor, which stars Andrea Riseborough, Christopher Abbott, Tuppence Middleton, Sean Bean, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, follows corporate agent Tasya Vos (Riseborough), who works for a secretive organization that uses brain-implant technology to inhabit other people’s bodies – ultimately driving them to commit assassinations for high-paying clients.

This is one gory techno-thriller that adds the queasy mix of such genre stalwarts as Panos Cosmatos, Christopher Nolan, Mamoru Oshii, Shinya Tsukamoto, and, yep you guessed it, David Cronenberg. The film tracks some ultra-gory psychic warfare between stars Riseborough and Abbott as they fight for control of the latter’s body in what has to be one of the more intense cinematic experiences this year, as well as one of the most anticipated among arthouse and genre fans. Audiences might not quite be ready for Possessor but this is likely to get under a lot of people’s skin.
The son of iconic Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg, Possessor is Brandon’s latest after his debut Antiviral, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and went on to win several awards, including Best Canadian First Feature Film at the Toronto International Film Festival and Best New Director at the Sitges Film Festival. Possessor finds Brandon Cronenberg playing in the same science-fiction horror mode as Antiviral, only escalating the body horror to such gory extremes that he’s all but matched the elder Cronenberg on extremism.
Neon has acquired the U.S. rights to Possessor, which made its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival (where it became one of the most talked-about horror films of the festival). The distributor will announce a release date in the future for the pic. Well Go USA is handling the home entertainment release. Neon has been having a lot of great press lately since coming into huge critical and commercial acclaim with the likes of Bong Joon Ho’s history-making Parasite and the already-beloved romantic drama Portrait Of A Lady On Fire. Possessor currently holds a score in the 90%+ range on Rotten Tomatoes.

There currently isn’t a release date for Possessor but look for an announcement very soon.
