Highland Film Group has released an official trailer for Jiu Jitsu, and it looks exactly how you think a movie starring Nic Cage fighting aliens in an insane mix of sci-fi fantasy and action martial arts would look.
Every six years, an ancient order of expert Jiu Jitsu fighters faces a fearsome alien invader in a battle for Earth. When war hero and master Jiu Jitsu fighter Jake Barnes refuses to face Brax, the indomitable leader of the invaders, the future of humanity hangs in the balance. Injured and suffering from amnesia, Jake is captured by a military squad that has arrived on the planet and is rescued by Wylie (Cage) and a team of fellow Jiu Jitsu fighters who must help him recover his memory and regain his strength for an epic battle that will once again determine the fate of mankind.
Check out the first trailer for Jiu Jitsu which IGN premiered earlier this week:
In addition to the presence of Cage (who’ll likely only be making a very liberal “and” cameo in the movie), Jiu Jitsu stars Alain Moussi (Kickboxer: Retaliation, Kickboxer: Vengeance), Frank Grillo (The Purge: Election Year, Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Rick Yune (Alita: Battle Angel, Olympus Has Fallen), Marie Avgeropoulos (The 100, 50/50), Juju Chan (Wu Assassins, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny), and Tony Jaa (Ong-Bak franchise, Furious 7).
This thing looks absolutely ridiculous but in that “Friday-night-with-some-pizzas-and-a-little-substance-abuse” kinda way. It looks fun! There’s something special about Predator-knockoffs from around the world. And the fact that it’s hitting in about a month on VOD is even better. And look, when Nic Cage says “I Can Fly” at the end of this trailer, I really believe him. The dude doesn’t have to go this hard but he does that for us!
Jiu Jitsu is from Greek-American filmmaker Dimitri Logothetis. who directed 2018’s Kickboxer: Retaliation. These kinds of movies are his bread and butter as he’s either produced or directed such other classic C-movies like Pretty Smart, Slaughterhouse Rock, The Closer, Body Shot, Hungry for You, Cheyenne, The Lost Angel, and Wings of the Dragon.
Here’s a quote from Logothetis on both working (again) with Moussi and bring Jiu Jitsu to screens:
After we successfully reintroduced the Kickboxer franchise to a new generation of martial arts fans with the sixth and seventh entries in the series, we set out to up the ante with a Sci Fi Martial Arts franchise that could bring the same kind of intensity and longevity to a new arena. Jiu Jitsu is guaranteed to satisfy the millions of martial arts and science fiction lovers across the globe with world class martial artists, stunt men go-to expert Alain Moussi joining superstar Nicolas Cage for some formidable, no holds barred fight sequences set in exotic Burma.
You can also behold the really bland poster for what would have been a beaut of a VHS or DVD cover in an old video store.
Highland Film will release Jiu Jitsu in select theaters and on VOD starting November 20th.
