So the other day I went on a little bit of a rant regarding reboots and my thoughts on their frequent use in Hollywood. So now I might be contradicting myself a little, but if there was ever a movie that desperately needed a reboot, it’s Daredevil.
When it first came out in 2003 I was excited to see one of my all time favorite superheroes brought to the big screen, despite Ben Affleck‘s casting as the titular character. And most (if not all) of the fanbase out there was were pretty disappointed at the stinker presented to us.
So I’m really trying to hold off the excitement for fear of being let down again when I hear news of the upcoming reboot directed by David Slade. The latest news to reach us from the DD camp is that they have chosen a writer to begin work on the script. The Hollywood Reporter… uh… reports:
Brad Caleb Kane, a writer-producer on cult Fox TV show Fringe, has been hired to pen the franchise’s relaunch, which has high ambitions: Kane is being asked to adapt one of the most influential and acclaimed comic stories of all time, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s “Born Again” run from Daredevil.
Fox is tackling the project with Regency.
David Slade is developing and attached to direct the new Daredevil movie. Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark of Chernin Entertainment are producing.
While Kane only has one produced feature to his credit — he worked on the crime drama Brooklyn’s Finest — the scribe has gained a following around town for that strong script. He worked on DreamWorks’ View-Master movie, a Richard Pryor biopic that has Bill Condon attached to direct, and a draft of The Historian, Columbia’s planned adaptation of the Elizabeth Kostova vampire novel.
Kane is a Daredevil fan, and his energy and passion for the material helped him nab the job, according to insiders.
I literally just finished reading Born Again, and while it may not be the easiest story to tell in an origin type format, it is one hell of a great storyline that continues to be one of the shining points to the Daredevil mythos.
And with the success X-Men: First Class (Loved it!) has brought to the struggling X-Men franchise it brings hope to the DD relaunch. DD deserves a good movie, hell a good trilogy! Out of all the heroes flooding the big screen these days, I would pretty much trade all of them in for a really good Daredevil movie.
Now if we could just find an actor to properly bring Matt Murdock/DD to the screen. So I open the floor to you. Who do you think would make a good DD? Are you excited by a DD relaunch or should it stay buried with Affleck’s acting career?
