Webcomic Wednesday A-Z: Goblins

Welcome to Webcomic Wednesday, in which we embark on an epic quest for comics available in the mystical land of “online,” just in time for the Geek Sabbath (a.k.a. New Comics Day).

Not all fantasy roleplaying nerds are comics fans, and of course not all comics fans are fantasy RPG nerds. But for those of us who find ourselves in that rather large intersection of the “types of geek” Venn diagram, have we got a wonderful webcomic for you to check out. Been running for nearly EIGHT YEARS

There’s something out there for everyone, and while the initial handful of Goblins strips exhibit pretty rough art, even from the beginning the comic is rather special, especially to bona fide D&D/fantasy RPG nerds (guilty). The subject matter — basically a fantasy roleplaying world from the point of view of a handful of goblins — hits a certain sweet spot, and the writing really shines when creator Thunt (a.k.a. Tarol Hunt) is going for humor that points out both what’s awesome and what’s silly about role-playing games.

He also has a sentimental side that swings and hits more often than it misses. In fact, the character work, humor (meta-humor especially), and interrelations between the characters are the best part of the comic; we frequently find ourselves begging for the action to be over so the talking can begin.

The art’s grown by leaps and bounds since the beginning, and is a perfectly serviceable vehicle for what’s proven to be a long-time, high-quality favorite. Plus Minmax is the funniest character name ever, if you know the RPG lingo (and [spoiler alert] you’ll hate him for a while, but love him later. Caveat: only if you have a soul and/or a sense of humor). So please, check it out. The most fun you can have without a 20-sided die.
