We already reported on the rumors of John C. Reilly’s involvement with James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which was mainly connected with the character of Rhomann Dey. In the comics Dey was the Nova Corps member who selected the first Earth born Nova (Richard Rider), but his role in the movie was said to be a human who acted as a liaison between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Guardians. This was of course just a rumor, and recent casting news has raised some interesting questions.
Deadline first reported that John C. Reilly has been cast as Ronan the Accuser, which teased the idea of the Kree entering the MCU. Ronan has long been rumored to have a part in GotG, and in the mainstream Marvel universe he is the Supreme Accuser of the Kree, a race that has been at war with a number of other alien races in the Marvel Universe that the Avengers (and X-Men) routinely get involved with. An interesting aspect of Marvel’s Ultimate universe casts Ronan a bit differently as he is actually Thanos’ son, which opens some interesting doors for the films to take.
Obviously Thanos is set to play a huge role in the developing MCU, which has already been heavily influenced by the Ultimate universe. This would offer a very convenient way of bringing Ronan into the fold, but most fans would prefer to see the Kree version in order to get that side of the story into the picture. Either way, Ronan’s involvement in other films of the MCU is probable, which adds a bit more intrigue to Benicio del Toro’s role in the film. These are all interesting paths that Ronan’s story could take, but the really interesting news today is definitely Reilly’s casting.
Which has been a bit confusing, as soon after he was confirmed by various sites as playing Ronan the Accuser, this was changed to state that he would actually be playing Rhomann Dey, who was also known as Nova Prime and leader of the Nova Corps. This ties in well to the earlier rumor but casts a bit of doubt on the source, concerning the pretty huge mix-up of characters.
Reilly has become pretty well known for his comedic roles of late, but his past career is full of really juicy serious roles that make this an exciting casting announcement, either way this turns out. This cast just keeps filling up with all the right names, and is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of Marvel’s Phase Two. At least until we see a Nova movie…
