Frightening First Trailer for Krampus has Arrived

This week we were treated to the first trailer for the upcoming Christmas horror movie Krampus, which stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette and David Koechner. If you looked at just the cast you might assume it’s a new holiday comedy rather than what looks to be a promising and intense horror flick about the creature more commonly known as the Christmas Devil, but here we are.

So who, or what is Krampus? From National Geographic;

Bad Santa, meet Krampus: a half-goat, half-demon, horrific beast who literally beats people into being nice and not naughty.

Krampus isn’t exactly the stuff of dreams: Bearing horns, dark hair, and fangs, the anti-St. Nicholas comes with a chain and bells that he lashes about, along with a bundle of birch sticks meant to swat naughty children. He then hauls the bad kids down to the underworld.

The legend is part of a centuries-old Christmas tradition in Germany, where Christmas celebrations begin in early December. Krampus was created as a counterpart to kindly St. Nicholas, who rewarded children with sweets. Krampus, in contrast, would swat “wicked” children and take them away to his lair.

Well, that mostly sounds like nightmare fuel. Let’s check out the trailer…

Just as you might expect from your normal holiday movie, the family is gathering to celebrate and bicker with one another. Before long though, things turn and starts to look like a horribly twisted version of Home Alone. This time where a hellish beast is summoned to terrorize and kill your family rather than simply wishing they would all just disappear.

Krampus Faceoff

The film, released through Legendary Pictures, was directed by Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat) and is set to arrive in theaters December 4. If the film lives up to this trailer, it looks like Krampus will leave audiences shivering out of fear. [Get it? Cause it’s cold out there?] What did you think of the trailer?
