Weathering With You: First Trailer and Poster For Your Name Director’s Next Anime Spectacle

Toho Co. has unveiled an official trailer for the Japanese animation film titled Weathering With You, the highly anticipated next film from the writer/director of Your Name, Makoto Shinkai. The new film follows a young man who moves to Tokyo and befriends a girl who can manipulate the weather.

Weathering With You is both written and directed by Japanese animation filmmaker Makoto Shinkai, director of the films Show Show, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 5 Centimeters Per Second, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, and The Garden of Words. The filmmaker achieved worldwide acclaim with the beloved animated film, Your Name. He’s back with another original film featuring gorgeous animation and a title that actually translates to Child Of Weather in Japanese.

Check out the Japanese first trailer for Weathering With You:

The original Japanese version features the voices of Kotaro Daigo and Nana Mori. The trailer certainly displays the film’s exhilarating animation style, even without translation or subtitles. Check out how each individual raindrop displaying its own glimmer or the trailer’s music, done by Radwimps, who also did the theme song to Your Name. Shinkai is an emotional filmmaker, often telling tales of young romance among beautiful vistas and visual splendor. The animation certainly speaks for itself so you can count on this be an exciting film for both anime fans and non-fans alike.

Shinkai’s previous film, Your Name, was a huge box office hit in Japan, going on to become the highest grossing film of 2016 and the 12th-highest-grossing non-English film worldwide, with a total gross of $358 million. Bested only by Titanic, Frozen, and fellow anime pioneer Hayo Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, Your Name is one of the top money makers in its native country of all time. Weathering With You almost feels like a spiritual successor to Your Name and there is no doubt Shinkai will deliver another stunner.
