Neon has debuted the first official trailer for a horror film titled The Lodge. Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival in the Midnight category, the highly buzzed-about film is from Austrian filmmakers Severin Fiala & Veronika Franz, making their first English-language feature.
Riley Keough stars as Grace, the future-stepmom of Aidan (Jaeden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh). The trio finds themselves trapped by snow in a remote house after Aidan and Mia’s father Richard (Richard Armitage) travels back to the city. The film’s first trailer definitely surmises that things go a little downhill from there.

The trailer gives off some eerily Shining-esque vibes, which worked wonders for Hereditary and Midsommar‘s (so far) marketing campaigns. The directing duo behind The Lodge has a lot of nasty tricks up their sleeve with this one and they create an unrelenting experience. So far, The Lodge has already garnered high praise as one of the best horror films in years. It will have a hard time, but if this trailer even hints at the terrors to come, The Lodge might end up being the sleeper hit horror fans will have to seek out later this year.
Directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala brought us one of the most talked about recent entries in the horror genre with their 2014 film Goodnight Mommy. Another tale of unsettling siblings, Goodnight Mommy followed twin boys who move to a new home with their mother after she has face-changing cosmetic surgery, but under her bandages is someone the children don’t recognize. The film was named one of the 5 best foreign language films by the National Board of Review and has since made the list of the best horror films of the 2010s. Now, the pair are back with The Lodge, which received strong word after playing this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
As for the cast, the directors brought in some names familiar to the genre. Aside from our lead Riley Keough (It Comes At Night, Hold the Dark), we also see Jaeden Martell, who is best known for playing Bill Denbrough in the new It franchise. Little sister ‘Mia’ is played by Lia McHugh, who has only seven credits to her name currently, but five of those have a horror slant to them. Add in Richard Armitage (Castlevania, Hannibal) and Alicia Silverstone (The Crush) and you’ve got yourself a pretty solid little cast.
