Kickstarter Chronicles: Where Should You Put Your Money?

Kickstarter is a crowdsourcing platform where people donate money to your idea to get it off the ground. In exchange for your contribution, you are rewarded with exclusives based on the amount of money you donate to the project. Getting a copy of the product, being a producer in a film, T-Shirts, posters, etc –  these are some of the various rewards you can get.

There are hundreds of Kickstarters running at a time, so we’ve picked out a few we think might be worth funding if you’re looking to ger involved…

Comic: The Spider King

There have been a few great cross genres created as of late. Whether it is Robots, Zombies, Ninjas or Pirates going against each other, it usually makes for an entertaining book. The Spider King is a graphic novel that pits Vikings against Aliens and it looks like it’ll be fun. Written by Josh Vann and Illustrated by Simone D’Armini, you can support this book and watch the Vikings kick some Alien butt.

Gaming: The Amityville Project Phobos

Kickstarter has been host to a myriad of tabletop games and this one seems to be another awesome entry. The Amityville Project: Phobos has a very unique premise as you are fighting to gain control of your mind. A project split an investigating detectives mind into four personas and these are clashing to gain control. There are eighty miniatures included in the game and they all look twisted and creepy. This is definitely a project to watch as it looks really unique.

Film: Airlock

Distracted Media has created a few projects and their latest offering is on Kickstarter. Airlock has an interesting premise as a derelict ship docks with an isolated space station. The security officer Jonah Wright inspects the ship and finds that the crew was murdered. In the cargo hold are a group of Sector Nine Asylum seekers who are hiding a secret that threatens the entire human race. This tidbit alone makes me want to watch this series and you can watch it for free if you donate to their cause.

Technology: Raspberry Pi minicade

Raspberry Pi is a mini computer that has a ton of uses from home networking to media servers. People also use it to play some of the retro arcade games and one of the projects is to make a mini arcade cabinet. The cabinet will come complete with a mini LCD, arcade stick and buttons and even speakers! With this DIY project and your Raspberry Pi you will be playing classic arcade games in no time. If you ever wanted your own arcade machine but don’t have the space or money then you need to check out this project.

Design: BMOG

Remember when you were a kid and waged war on your living room floor? Playing with robots, monsters and army men was such a fun time. BMOG (which stands for Bio-Mechanical Ordnance Gestalts) is a new toy that is being developed and has multiple uses. For one each of the single pieces can be used with action figures. These pieces can also be combined to make robots that are bristling with weaponry. BMOG is a great project that has multiple uses that is worthy of your attention.

These are some of the great projects that are on Kickstarter right now. Tune in from time to time as I will chronicle some of the best projects in gaming, film, comics, design and technology.

Netflix & Marvel Studios Team Up for Four Shows in 2015

With the success of Marvel properties being turned into movies (such as Iron Man, Captain America and The Avengers) fans have been hungry for more. When ABC dropped the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it opened up new doors when the show became a modest hit. Seeing the increasing popularity of these Marvel-tinged movies and shows, Netflix has ordered four Marvel shows to premiere on their streaming service.

Live Action Patlabor Series to Debut in 2014

In the early 90’s anime was starting to come into the United States. There were dealers at conventions raking in serious dough by offering VHS copies of anime series. One of the shows that I was exposed to in this time was a show called Patlabor. The series focused on a division of the Tokyo police department that dealt with giant robot crimes. These robots, called “Labors”, had various functions from military to construction. Patlabor had a 47 episode TV series with 16 episodes for an OAV and three movies, so it’s safe to say it was very popular during its run. Now the folks at Special Vehicles Section 2 are getting a new series and the best part is it is going to be live action!

The new show is going to focus on all-new faces, but  Chief Shigeo Shiba, the character in charge of labor maintenance in the original series, will reprise his role and even be voiced by the original actor, Shigeru Chiba. There are going to be twelve 50 minute episodes a movie is slated to follow the series in 2015.

One of the best things about this live action series? They made a 1:1 scale replica of the labor for this show! There are pictures depicting what looks to be an AV-98 Ingram and it towers over the cast (See below). I would expect that the live action show will feature large-scale CGI battles with the labors, but it was a combination of action, story and likeable characters that bound the original series together and made it special. We’ll have to wait until sometime next year to see exactly how the new Patlabor compares, as it won’t be out until 2014 in Japan.

Five Films To Stoke Your Halloween Spirit

This is the time of year when the leaves start to change to vibrant colors and a cold chill fills the air. It is the end of October and it is the time where we prick up our ears at strange sounds at night. But what if you haven’t been bitten by the Halloween spirit yet? What are you waiting for? Here are five movies to get you into the mood for the holiday!

[tabgroup][tab title=”Trick ‘R Treat”]

One of the better anthologies that are out there focusing on Halloween. There are four stories that are interwoven together and they are all awesome. Sprinkle in some comic art and some great costumes and special effects and this will get you in the mood for the holiday.[/tab]

[tab title=”Insidious”]

There are movies that I watch religiously and there are movies I will watch once and never again. This is the ONLY movie I have not watched at all because it is that scary. I’ve showed it to other people and they have come back to me shivering. The film will worm its way into your brain and stay there making you jump at strange noises at night.[/tab]

[tab title=”V/H/S 2″]

Why choose this film instead of the first? Simply, because I have to say that this film is superior than the first one in every single way. These four stories will captivate you and will want to watch the entire movie from beginning to end.[/tab]

[tab title=”The Innkeepers”]

the innkeepers

This has a very creepy vibe to it as it deals with two people who are watching over an inn. The inn has seen better days and it is about to close, but the two folks who take care of the inn are also ghost hunters. And, what’s worse they go looking for ghosts in this inn and when they find them that is when the problems start. Not quite The Shining, but that is hard to beat.[/tab]

[tab title=”You’re Next”]

This is a film I missed in the theaters and will see at some point if only because the premise sounds so promising. A house in the countryside in which the family is trapped when they come under attack from animal masked killers? What more perfect a choice to watch as you sit in the house waiting for all the little trick or treat’ers to come knocking on your door?

These are some of the scary movies that are out there that will get you into the mood for Halloween. What about you? What are some of the scary movies you love to watch to get you in the mood for this holiday? Let us know as we love to hear from you!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. first impressions

When it comes to movies based on comic book heroes, things have been hit and miss the past few years. However, Marvel seems to be getting it together as they have had some success with all their recent licenses. The Avengers was the crowning achievement bringing all these heroes together the first time on the big screen. Following the box office smash, ABC announced that they were going to make a TV show based off the movies called Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The agents that make up this team are an eclectic bunch that seem to play off one another. You have the lone wolf black ops member (Grant Ward), the two techies (Leo Fitz & Jenna Simmons) , the pilot /weapons expert (Melinda May) and the suspicious hacker (Skye).

In the first episode the team is sent out to investigate a superhuman who saved a woman from a burning building. Skye is part of an anti-government group called Rising Tide. After tracking down this particular super human and pacifying him peacefully, Skye is offered a job with S.H.I.E.L.D., which she accepts.

Episode two starts aboard the team plane as a giant hole is blown in the hull. The episode works its way backwards telling the story as the team is sent to Peru tracking a Code 0-8-4. This code stands for an object of unknown origin, and it turns out to be a Hydra weapon powered by tesseract technology. As they are about to unearth this artifact the local military shows up and swarms the team. Without giving too much away all I can say is watch this episode all the way through.

We’re two episodes in for this great show from Joss Whedon, and I am firmly hooked. With ABC (and therefore Disney) backing it, the chances we might see some cameos from the Avengers, or maybe some other heroes/villains is huge!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on every Tuesday night on ABC check your local listings.
