Trailer Roundup: K-11, RED 2, and Olympus Falling…

This is Grizzly Bomb’s Trailer Round for February the 5th in the year of 2013…

[tabgroup][tab title=”Olympus Has Fallen”]

The first thing that comes to mind is, “Merica!”  Though heavily reliant upon CGI, this trailer is intense nonetheless.  Where else would you be able to receive visuals of this nature?  It takes us way back to the year nineteen hundred and ninety-six when we saw the Whitehouse blown to pieces by a city sized space ship in Independence Day.  It’s truly a disastrous sight that we would never wish to see in real life, but in a film, it should make one phenomenal story.

Gerard Butler is forced to come out from behind the desk to save the president of the United States Aaron Eckhart.  Hostage take overs have been done eight ways from Sunday, but this still looks entertaining and worth checking out.  There is something to be said about making a generic story seem appealing.

Director:  Antoine Fugua
Stars:  Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott, Radha Mitchell, Ashley Judd, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Jaye Williams, and Melissa Leo.
Release Date:  March 22, 2013

Well if it isn’t the most blatant commentary on social status possible?  At least they mix in some amazing green screening to keep the story fresh.Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl are destined to remain apart due to class restrictions.  That would about sum it up, but if you use Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess, you’ve got yourself a movie.

Director:  Juan Solanas
Stars:  Kirsten Dunst, Jim Sturgess, Timothy Spall, Agnieshka Wnorowska, Neil Napier, Jayne Heitmeyer, James Kidnie, and Frank M. Ahearn.
Release Date:  March 15, 2013

The first thought that came to mind when watching this trailer was, “Is this a real thing?”  I suppose it makes sense.  If I might have thought transgendered individuals had it difficult as it was, I didn’t even think about what jail would be like.

So thank you Jules Stewart for giving us a look.  Yes, I am talking about Kristen Stewart’s mother.  Personally, the only redeeming quality I have seen so far is that Jason Mewes is on the cast list.

Director:  Jules Stewart
Stars: Goran Visnjic, Kate del Castillo, D.B. Sweeney, Portia Doubleday, Jason Mewes, Sonya Eddy, Luis Moncada, and Tommy Lister.
Release Date: November 26, 2012 Italy

As described this film is, “An agoraphobic father teams up with a renegade priest to save his daughter from the clutches of a gang of twisted feral children who committed an act of violence against his family years earlier.”The entire trailer, I couldn’t decide what was real and what was inside his head.  It almost appeared to be a paternal postpartum depression.  Is that even a thing?  I guess you have to check it out to find out.

Director:  Ciaran Foy
Stars:  Aneurin Barnard, James Cosmo, Wunmi Mosaku, Jake Wilson, and Amy Shiels.
Release Date:  March 1, 2013

So what would be more interesting than following the lives of assassins?  How about when they are aged and retired?

In this second installment, we continue to follow Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) who is clearly trying to enjoy retirement.  That doesn’t work out too well when he suddenly becomes everyone’s top target.

Director:  Dean Parisot
Stars:  Bruce Willis, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, David Thewlis, and Byung-hun Lee.
Release Date:  August 2, 2013

Dead Man Down: New Trailer with Farrell and Noomi Rapace

Dead Man Down is a crime thriller starring Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace, Dominic Cooper  and Terrence Howard. The film marks the English-language debut of Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev, who previously directed Rapace in the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It’s due to be released on the 8th of March. And we have the trailer…

The plot is as follows: Victor (Colin Farrell) is an enforcer to a New York City boss, Alphonse Hoyt (Terrence Howard), who was responsible for the deaths of his wife and daughter, an act that Victor seeks revenge for. Victor turns detective when his boss is
under threat from an unknown killer. During this he is seduced by Beatrice (Noomi Rapace), a woman from across the street who saw Victor murder someone, who blackmails him into helping her with her own search for vengeance. I’m telling you this as the trailer doesn’t make it all that clear.

I don’t know what to make of this trailer. Sure, it’s got two good-looking actors as the leads (and they’re reasonably good at acting, which is always a plus) as well as action and romance, and it may turn out that the actual film is quite thrilling, but it looks so, well, drab. I think it’s aiming for arty. It just doesn’t quite hit it. It’s got something missing.

The most interesting thing about this trailer is that it features a cover of Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Kendra Morris. I’m not one hundred per cent sure who she is but she’s done a fantastic version of the classic Pink Floyd track. Even so it still seems at odds with the trailer. I’m guessing it was to go with the arty vibe.

What did surprise me though was to find out that it was produced by WWE studios. I didn’t even know they had a film production company! They seem to make mostly wrestling videos and films with wrestlers in acting roles. In Dead Man Down the wrestler in question is Wade Barrett, who has a bit part as Kilroy. He’s also from Preston in Lancashire.

So that’s Dead Man Down. A film I might see if it gets good reviews, but not solely on the strengths of this trailer.

Trailer Roundup: Danny Boyle, Halle Berry, and Jackie Robinson…

42

42 is sure to deliver the amazing true story of the first African American to play Major League Baseball during our modern era, Jackie Robinson.  Typically, I find these films to be depressing because they uncover some of the filth our nation has been responsible for in the past.  However, it should also be incredibly triumphant demonstrating a first hand occurrence of when segregation began to deteriorate in this country.

Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) receives guidance from Brooklyn Dodgers Team Executive Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) as he breaks the color barrier of Major League Baseball.

Director:  Brian Helgeland

Stars:  Harrison Ford, Alan Tudyk, Chadwick Boseman, Kelley Jakle, Nicole Beharie, Christopher Meloni, and T.R. Knight.

Release Date:  April 12, 2013

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand: New Trailer and Interviews

Back in August we talked about Arnold’s big 2013 comeback, starting with The Last Stand – out this Friday. It’s been since 2003 since Arnold’s last lead role in the epically disappointing Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Now while I imagine this new one will be more T3 than T2, I still plan to visit the theater this weekend. It is Schwarzenegger after all. The basic idea is that Sheriff Arnold is too old and the FBI is too slow, and the bad guys are super fast and good. Here is the 2nd trailer for it…

Evil Dead: Remake Red Band Trailer #2 is Awesome.

“The remake’s gonna kick ass – you have my word.” – Bruce Campbell

April 12th and the release of the latest Evil Dead could not come soon enough. You see, once upon a time, there were two friends named Sam and Bruce that grew up in two small Michigan towns named Birmingham and Royal Oak.  On a shoe string budget, these two were capable of developing and producing one of the greatest horror franchises of all time.  Quite simply put, they had an audience that craved blood, and they delivered. And it’s not just Michiganders that have a strong affection for the franchise, but horror enthusiasts across the world.
