Star Wars Update! Spin-off Movies on the Way Alongside the New Trilogy!

Geek Exchange have confirmed that Disney has more plans for the Star Wars franchise and certainly more movies in the pipeline. We also now know who will write two of them. Lawrence Kasdan (Screen Writer on The Empire Strikes Back) and Simon Kinberg (Screen Writer on X-Men: Days of Future Past) were confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger. He had this to say about the two writers:

[box_light]“[Kasdan and Kinberg are] working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga, so we still plan to make Star Wars VII, VIII and IX roughly over a six-year period of time starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time, too.”[/box_light]

So not only are Star Wars fans getting more of the continuing storyline of George Lucas’s epic saga, they are also going to be treated to more movies spinning off from Star Wars Mythology. Fantastic news to say the least and some even better news about the great talent behind these spin offs. Lawrence and Kasdan are established and clever writers and with Kasdan himself already a part of the Star Wars universe (with him working on Empire) we can expect great things. This format opens up a massive selection of characters that could be given their own stories.

While the movies lay dormant for quite some time after Return of the Jedi (until The Phantom Menace came onto our screens), the universe did not wait and expanded out into books, comics, with a huge amount of expanded stories that spanned through several era’s in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Stories concerning events set years before The Phantom Menace (The Old Republic, Tales of the Jedi), or during the original trilogy (Splinter of the Mind’s EyeShadows of the Empire),  and the continuing story after the original trilogy which are sagas in their own right (Dark Empire, The Thrawn Trilogy). So while the expanded movies will be original stories, there really is no limit to where they can move forward from here. Especially with a few stand-alone pictures mixed in. Can you imagine a whole film with Yoda (rumored) or Mace Windu? That’s what this turn of events could offer us.

Shortly after this was released to the masses, Bob Iger came back again with even more exciting news. Collider shared that two confirmed stories would be about a young Han Solo (following the young rogue smuggler after Revenge of the Sith to his appearance in A New Hope) and the mightiest of all bounty hunters Boba Fett (probably between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi, unless you go with the expanded universe version where HE SURVIVES) mixing it up with some other bounty hunter scum.

So what do we have here exactly? Well with these stories we could see a return of characters now dead in the franchise. Darth Vader could easily make an appearance again,as he hired Boba Fett and could have had dealings with Han Solo, whohas had trouble with the Empire before. And with Boba Fett involved you would think that Jabba the Hutt will pop up at some point as well as his old bounty hunter buddies like IG88. With Han Solo we could see him winning the Millennium Falcon or meeting up with his hairy buddy Chewbacca. There are lots and lots of possibilities here.

However, there are certain problems with this. Finding an actor to play a young Han Solo could be a problem. Those are some big boots to fill as every one remembers Harrison Ford as their Han Solo. Most people seemed to embrace Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan, so maybe it will not be an issue. As I mentioned before the comics and books about Star Wars have already expanded greatly on the adventures of certain characters and Boba Fett is one of the most talked about. He has had entire comic books written about his exploits so it will be interesting to see if any of these plot lines are taken for the movie. It seems that Boba Fett will not rise from the Sarlacc’s belly as he did in the comic books; just because of the fact his story takes place in between parts 4-6. Still, it would be great to see him jet off again in his own adventure.

Is it a good thing to do these spin-off movies at all? If Disney is spreading themselves to thin here, than will the spin-off movies be of a poor caliber compared to Episodes 7 – 9? Personally I think Star Wars content lends itself better to television format rather than other feature films. Television is better suited to character development. Certain new characters could be introduced to a fresh audience this way and established characters can be expanded on, giving older Star Wars fans something to get excited about. People could disagree with me here after the cheesy nature of The Star Wars Holiday Special, but television has moved on greatly since then and it has become a respected form of story telling in its own right. But at the end of the day it is still more Star Wars so as long as it does not turn out like The Phantom Menace (which I hate to say is still painful to watch even after its release in 1999 over ten years ago), then I think we can all agree it is an interesting time to be a Star Wars fan.

One finally note to this news which may be of interest. Yahoo has an interview with both Lawrence and Kasdan about how they feel taking on this established and beloved universe and some of their plans for it. Keep reading Grizzly Bomb for more information as it develops.

6 Fast 6 Furious Has a Longer Trailer; Also Defies Logic and Physics

That’s right people, just when you think you can escape Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, they decide to buckle up and give you Fast & Furious 6. Everyone saw the ridiculousness of the trailer that was done during the Super Bowl but you’re in for a treat. You think having a tank and a car exploding out of the nose of an airplane was all you were going to get before Memorial Day 2013? That would be wrong my friends, because they released the full extended look trailer on the internet. It’s below, so watch that and I’ll give my comments afterwards. Try not to run out and buy a 24-pack of Mountain Dew afterwards by the way.

This movie is basically caffeine and video games with a dash of tearing a physics book in half, wrapped up into one crazy movie. Admittedly, I enjoy the Fast & Furious movies. They are easy fluff that I can sit down and watch without having to think. Granted, mostly because the script never bothers to think at all but Fast Five was actually extremely entertaining. Anyways, we see the return of Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) as a possible villain and the addition of Gina Carano as well to beat up everything in her path as the new right hand woman to Dwayne Johnson’s agent character.

So basically we get London, Luke Evans as the main baddie, the captain guy from The Raid: Redemption, planes, tanks, and automobiles. And a lot of stupidly awesome stunts that would wreck a person in real life. Luckily, in movie world, it looks amazing with what they are able to pull off. Justin Lin, who directed Better Luck Tomorrow, a great indie movie, before he became the go-to guy in destroying cars, is at the wheel again for this movie and now has directed the last four Fast & Furious movies. He has definitely got a great eye for set pieces and this movie is no different. Makes you wonder what he’d do with the Terminator 5 movie…

Anyways, this movie comes out on Memorial Day weekend 2013. Yeah, it won’t be poignant or deep but man, it’ll be a helluva ride. That’s right, I just about ended this article with a cliche. But hey, if the above picture can have Paul Walker playing white boy, the token asian character, the rapper/actor and his R&B singer/actor, with the model/actor and Vin Diesel crossing his arms not smiling, we should all embrace the cliche train.

Chris Pratt Cast as Star-Lord in Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy”!

The search for Marvel Studio’s newest lead actor has ended, and the role of Star-Lord goes to… Chris Pratt! Just like the title says! Pratt will be joining no one in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the next big franchise coming to us in Marvel’s Phase 2. Still pretty early in it’s development, GotG has yet to cast any other members of the team or reveal much about the story, but casting this role is a huge step forward.

Trailer Roundup: K-11, RED 2, and Olympus Falling…

This is Grizzly Bomb’s Trailer Round for February the 5th in the year of 2013…

[tabgroup][tab title=”Olympus Has Fallen”]

The first thing that comes to mind is, “Merica!”  Though heavily reliant upon CGI, this trailer is intense nonetheless.  Where else would you be able to receive visuals of this nature?  It takes us way back to the year nineteen hundred and ninety-six when we saw the Whitehouse blown to pieces by a city sized space ship in Independence Day.  It’s truly a disastrous sight that we would never wish to see in real life, but in a film, it should make one phenomenal story.

Gerard Butler is forced to come out from behind the desk to save the president of the United States Aaron Eckhart.  Hostage take overs have been done eight ways from Sunday, but this still looks entertaining and worth checking out.  There is something to be said about making a generic story seem appealing.

Director:  Antoine Fugua
Stars:  Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott, Radha Mitchell, Ashley Judd, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Jaye Williams, and Melissa Leo.
Release Date:  March 22, 2013

[/tab][tab title=”Upside Down”]

Well if it isn’t the most blatant commentary on social status possible?  At least they mix in some amazing green screening to keep the story fresh.Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl are destined to remain apart due to class restrictions.  That would about sum it up, but if you use Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess, you’ve got yourself a movie.

Director:  Juan Solanas
Stars:  Kirsten Dunst, Jim Sturgess, Timothy Spall, Agnieshka Wnorowska, Neil Napier, Jayne Heitmeyer, James Kidnie, and Frank M. Ahearn.
Release Date:  March 15, 2013

The first thought that came to mind when watching this trailer was, “Is this a real thing?”  I suppose it makes sense.  If I might have thought transgendered individuals had it difficult as it was, I didn’t even think about what jail would be like.

So thank you Jules Stewart for giving us a look.  Yes, I am talking about Kristen Stewart’s mother.  Personally, the only redeeming quality I have seen so far is that Jason Mewes is on the cast list.

Director:  Jules Stewart
Stars: Goran Visnjic, Kate del Castillo, D.B. Sweeney, Portia Doubleday, Jason Mewes, Sonya Eddy, Luis Moncada, and Tommy Lister.
Release Date: November 26, 2012 Italy

[/tab][tab title=”Citadel”]

As described this film is, “An agoraphobic father teams up with a renegade priest to save his daughter from the clutches of a gang of twisted feral children who committed an act of violence against his family years earlier.”The entire trailer, I couldn’t decide what was real and what was inside his head.  It almost appeared to be a paternal postpartum depression.  Is that even a thing?  I guess you have to check it out to find out.

Director:  Ciaran Foy
Stars:  Aneurin Barnard, James Cosmo, Wunmi Mosaku, Jake Wilson, and Amy Shiels.
Release Date:  March 1, 2013

[/tab][tab title=”Red 2″]

So what would be more interesting than following the lives of assassins?  How about when they are aged and retired?

In this second installment, we continue to follow Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) who is clearly trying to enjoy retirement.  That doesn’t work out too well when he suddenly becomes everyone’s top target.

Director:  Dean Parisot
Stars:  Bruce Willis, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, David Thewlis, and Byung-hun Lee.
Release Date:  August 2, 2013

Rumor Report! What’s in Store for the Hulk in Marvel’s Phase 3?

A lot of components came together and brought their best to the table when last summers explosive hit The Avengers finally arrived in theaters. There were some great moments from the team and the rest of the cast, but one that stood out was the new approach to the Hulk, who had already gone through two somewhat disappointing films to get to the Avengers.

We are now entering Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which brings us sequels to all the main players and the team with no mention of the Hulk. Even the new possible franchise Guardians of the Galaxy gets to be a part of Phase 2, presumably leaving the green guy in the dust until Avengers 2. Mark Ruffalo is signed on to 6 films, so it’s obvious we would expect some features centered on Hulk to come sooner rather than later. Well, that seems to be the case according to the latest scoop from Latino-Review’s El Mayimbe. Be warned, there are some serious potential SPOILERS below, so if you’re going to whine about it later, STOP READING. And definitely don’t watch this video from EM explaining everything.

Captain America: Winter Soldier – Cap Finds His New Leading Lady…

Some big casting news on the Captain America: Winter Soldier front as it looks like Steve Rogers has found his new leading lady. According to reports, Emily VanCamp of Revenge fame has scored the coveted leading role for the new Marvel film.

This comes off the heels of the news that Hayley Atwell will NOT be returning to the sequel, which is sad but necessary considering she’d be about 90 in the sequel. Still, it would’ve been great to see Cap get some closure with her Peggy Carter character, especially after a great deleted scene from the Avengers where he sees her file and lets it linger as the scene documents his struggle to adjust to modern times.

emily-vancamp-01-hsss431

Regardless, this should be a good addition for the cast, in which she shall see Anthony Mackie playing Falcon and a possible return for Bucky (Sebastian Stan) if the storyline holds with the comic version of Winter Soldier. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) are also rumored to be in the story as well, so we should expect the good ol’ Avengers team crossovers still taking place to connect these Phase 2 movies into the Avengers sequel.

Anthony-Mackie-Falcon

Although I have not seen Revenge, I keep hearing good things about it (well, at least the first season). I do remember VanCamp from Everwood so it’s just fun to see that she has slowly graduated from a WB show, to headlining an ABC show, to now the female lead in a huge big budget Marvel movie. She should be a good choice for the role and will be interesting to see what character she will play. Sharon Carter might ring a bell, but whether they reposition her as a relative to Peggy or someone else, I guess time will tell. The directors are Anthony and Joe Russo, who come in with an Arrested Development background (or at least that’s what I choose to reference them to) and the release date will be April 4, 2014. This will follow Iron Man 3 this summer and Thor: The Dark World  in November. Guardians of the Galaxy, helmed by James Gunn, being the final piece of the Phase 2 puzzle coming out in 2014 before we get Avengers 2. Ant-Man has been confirmed as the start of Phase 3, with them gunning at a late 2015 release for the Edgar Wright film.
