‘Days of Future Past’ Casts Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Possibly Sparking a War Between Fox and Marvel?

In some surprising casting news, Bryan Singer has announced that Evan Peters has been cast as Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past. If the name Quicksilver seems familiar from recent news, it’s because his inclusion in The Avengers 2 was recently confirmed by Joss Whedon. Singer revealed his news on Twitter, as he has grown quite accustomed to lately, revealing looks at Halle Berry As Storm, makeup for both Nicholous Hoult as Beast and Jennifer Lawrence As Mystique, Peter Dinklage’s first day on set, and pretty much every other piece of news we’ve seen over the last few months. Below is the edited tweet:

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Casts More Stars From Movies Past

In the X-Men Universe, I always thought that Days of Future Past was one of the best storylines out there and helped define them as the go-to comic for me. While the Phoenix Saga ranks as number one to me, I remember reading the comics for Days of Future Past at a friend’s house and loved the story of alternate futures and seeing it as a possibility if things were to go wrong. Imagine my own glee when I heard that the sequel to X-Men: First Class was going to be an adaptation of the Days of Future Past storyline. I got even more excited due to the return of Bryan Singer as director, the excitement after X2: X-Men United got squandered immediately with Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand (HOLY CRAP, it was awful). I did think that Matthew Vaughn did a terrific job in X-Men: First Class and am glad that he still helped write the script for this sequel. However, this seemed to be Singer’s baby and I am happy he returns to fold. As it turns out, he won’t be the only one…

Also slated to return according to SuperheroHype, are Rogue, Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) and Bobby Drake (Iceman), which means you get to see Anna Paquin, Ellen Page and Shawn Ashmore back in the mutant world once more. They join the list of several coming back, with Hugh Jackman coming back as Wolverine and Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart returning as Magneto and Professor X, respectively. Obviously with the time jumps and alternate realities, we were going to get glimpses of the cast but just hearing their involvement in the series makes me giddy.

Also confirmed back are Michael Fassbender (THE reason to watch X-Men: First Class), Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Nicholas Hoult. No word yet on anyone else joining the fun parade from the old movies as Famke Janssen is still waiting on her invite as Phoenix/Jean Grey along with James Marsden as Cyclops. Seeing as Ratner killed them off (seriously, every third Marvel movie blows, I’m so scared for Iron Man 3), it’s still open ended on who’s going to be in or out. We do know that Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert and January Jones as Emma Frost have yet to hear back on their odds in returning after First Class so I’m sure once we get closer to the date, we’ll get more information.

The Kitty Pryde thing seems to be the most significant casting considering her role in the comic storyline. It still remains to be seen as how big Ellen Page’s role will be once the movie hits the screen but that doesn’t damper the high hopes for the movie, or the fact that they care enough about the fans to bring back the same people in the old roles. I guess we’ll find out July 18, 2014 to see exactly how this bit of awesome news translates to the screen.

First Trailer for ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ (nee Killer)

Predicated on the success of such films as Snow White and the Huntsman, Mirror Mirror and the Television series Grimm we get a peek into another fairy tale turned Hollywood glamorfest in Jack the Giant Slayer (no longer a non-PC killer). The feature trailer is out and at first look is pretty impressive.

You’ve got Bryan Singer Directing, who will eternally be dear to my heart because of The Usual Suspects, but is probably better known for the X-Men series at this point. The movie stars great character actors in Ewan McGregor, Ian McShane and Stanley Tucci, and rising young stars in Eleanor Tomlinson and Nicholas Hoult. Sounds like a recipe for success especially with Singer collaborator Christopher McQuarie, The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie, on board with screenplay credits.

The story, of course, is a jacked up version of Jack and the Beanstalk resplendent with magic beans and everything. Bryan Singer must have liked Nicholas Hoult’s work as Beast in the X-Men prequels as he gets the starring role in this film as Jack, whom apparently eventually slays some Giants. Speaking of reunions Ewan McGregor, the king’s right hand man, is reunited with Trainspotting cohort Ewen Bremner whom I must assume is playing a Giant with an indecipherable Welsh accent. Ian McShane, the famously bilesome ‘Al Swearengen‘, is the king of this realm and it is his daughter, the princess (Tomlinson) who finds herself up the beanstalk, as it were,  in need of rescue. Tucci gets the role of the villain it seems, a human cohort of the Giants who riles them to take back the realm of men.

Altogether in scope and cast this film seems to have a lot going for it despite the absurdity of it’s subject. The Giants look pretty impressive, but like all things special effectery you hope they don’t get too much in the way of the storyline. It’s going to be a bit of a wait for anyone who’s genuinely excited about this project as it isn’t scheduled for release until the Summer of next year, but I would expect to see this trailer or an updated one featured on the big screen before any screening of The Hobbit this Christmas.

Big Casting for ‘Days of Future Past’, as Patrick Stewart & Ian McKellan Sign On!

X-Men: Days of Future Past continues to move forward in a very interesting direction with more casting news today. Joining James McAvoy (Xavier) and Michael Fassbender (Magneto) for the First Class sequel, will be none other than Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan, who first brought the characters to the big screen. Bryan Singer announced the news through Twitter this morning, as well as officially announcing the returning cast from X-Men: First Class:

H+ Web Series: Google Hangout

Had you told me 20 years ago as I sat at a computer and played “Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego” that one day I would be able to talk to people face to face on that computer, I’d probably have laughed at you. The fact that I can video chat with one sister in Louisiana one minute and then video chat with my other sister in Israel moments later is just stunning. There are times I have to stop myself and think “holy shit, I can’t believe this is even possible”.

I get the same feeling when it comes to things like Google Hangout. I’m sure you’ve seen the commercial with the chick showing her friends she got engaged or (I think) the one with the baby walking for the first time. Basically it is a group video chat and while that sounds so simple, it’s amazing at the same time. I’ve had the opportunity to use Google Hangouts quite often with friends of mine and it’s somewhat awe-inspiring when I sit back and think how cool it is that people from New York and Washington (state) and California and Georgia are all able to see and talk to each other at the same time. Not to mention, Google has actually built a rather good program here.

I’ve used Skype and Tango quite a bit in the last few years and don’t get me wrong, they are great, but somehow Google takes what they have done and makes it that much better. I’ve found that the picture is clearer and the sound quality is light years better. Long story short, if you aren’t using Google Hangouts, you should be.

What does all this have to do with H+, The Digital Series?

Well, they decided to hold a Google Hangout themselves.

They aren’t the first to do this, as the cast and crew of The Guild have done quite a few as have various other people and groups. It makes sense for a show like H+ to jump on board given their topic and premise of their series.

If you aren’t familiar with H+ The Digital Series, you can read this review from a couple of months ago to brush up. Quite a bit has happened since I wrote that initial review and I’m happy to say, it’s all been good. I’m not going to give any details because I really do hope people will go and watch the series.

As for the Hangout, it was moderated by Fraser Cain of universetoday.com and was attended by writer/creator’s John Cabrera & Cosimo de Tommaso, producers Jason Taylor and Bryan Singer (yes that Bryan Singer), and director Stewart Hendler.

If you watch the hangout yourself (which I would recommend because it’s rather interesting) you’ll see that they don’t really talk about the plot lines of the show that much which I found to be nice because I’m a few “episodes” behind and didn’t really want to be spoiled. They talk quite a bit about how the show came to be, the steps they took in taking it from concept to a television pitch to then ultimately a web series.

The parts that I found to be most interesting was when they talked about filming the series in its entirety in 29 days. There are going to be 48 episodes and they are all about 6-8  minutes long which ends up being about 5 hours of finished product. To get the amount of material to end up with 5 hours of finished product in only 29 days is remarkable. I don’t know about anyone else, but it makes me appreciate the series all the more. Also, I would have never guessed that they filmed solely in Santiago, Chile. That means they made Santiago look like California, Oregon, The Republic of Congo, Ireland, England, Finland, Italy, and India. That’s impressive.

It was quite cool to see a director/producer of Bryan Singer’s caliber just sitting in a living room chatting on the computer. He talked quite a bit about finding Steward Hendler as director of the series and how the project had originally been planned for TV. Really it seems like this is John Cabrera’s baby. When he talks about the show you can just see how much he cares for it and hopes for its success. He touched on something I had wondered watching the show, which were the subtitles. Given that it does take place in so many different places, there is quite a bit of subtitling. However, not everything is subtitled. While talking in the Hangout, Cabrera says that they did it on purpose. Their hope was that people who might speak that language would come to the aid of those who didn’t and it would just be one more way for the viewers to come together. That’s exactly what has happened. There’s been numerous times I’ve scrolled through YouTube comments and seen where someone has provided a translation.

Perhaps the best thing to come out of the conversation was the news that while WB had not yet ordered season/Chapter 2, the script is being worked on. With 6.6 million views on YouTube so far and 104K subscribers, I’m clearly not the only one wanting Chapter 2 to happen. If nothing else, it is exciting to be a part of a new medium come into its own. Here’s hoping that H+ The Digital Series is just another part of a massive wave of internet based content in the near future.

In the meantime, catch up on H+over on YouTube, and why not follow Grizzly Bomb on Google+ as well? [Ed.Note: I approve this shameful plug]

Bryan Singer To Direct ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, Nobody Is Really Surprised

When news broke that Matthew Vaughn was stepping back as director of X-Men: Days of Future Past, fans were a little surprised. The much-anticipated sequel to X-Men: First Class gained a ton of hype as soon as the title was announced, and Vaughn was expected to direct, off of a screenplay he worked on. With the announcement that he was off the project, but still on board as producer most thoughts turned to Bryan Singer taking over as director.
