#3 – Countdown to Halloween: SCREAM

As some of you may know, Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street) is my favorite horror movie director of all time. In 1996, Craven directed a movie with a very different boogeyman.

PLOT: Scream is a movie about a masked killer and his victims. The movie begins with Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) answering a phone call. On the other line a man asks her what her favorite scary movie is. She goes back and forth with the voice who eventually threatens the life of her and her boyfriend Steve. The killer has tied Steve up in Casey’s backyard. When Casey answers the killer’s trivia question about Friday the 13th incorrectly, Steve is murdered. After a struggle, Casey is also murdered and hung from a tree in her yard.

There is a lot of buzz the next day about the couple’s deaths. The day the investigation begins is also the one year anniversary of Sidney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) mom. Tatum Riley (Rose McGowan) is Sidney’s best friend, and agrees to meet her at her home to stay because Sid’s dad is away on business. While waiting, Sidney can’t even watch TV. All that is on is coverage of the teens’ murders and reporter Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) talking about Sidney’s mother’s death.

Tatum calls and says she will be even longer getting to Sidney’s house, immediately followed by a phone call… a phone call from the same masked killer from the beginning. After taunting the killer, Sidney gets into a fight with him, and evades death. Her boyfriend Billy Loomis shows up and a phone drops out of his pocket. Immediately, Gale Weathers showed up with her cameraman.

Sidney goes home with Tatum. At Tatum’s house, Sidney gets another phone call from the killer, setting Billy free.

School is let out because of the murders, and the principal (Henry Winkler) is killed. Tatum’s boyfriend throws a big party during which many of the characters are killed off. During the party, Sidney and Billy go in a bedroom to have sex. Afterward, they are both attacked by the killer. Sidney escapes the killer and runs for help. In the end, Billy and Stu (Tatum’s boyfriend) reveal themselves as the killers to Sidney. Because of help from Gale and Dewey, Stu and Billy both die.

Reasons this movie is a great Halloween movie:

* From the beginning, Billy looks and acts like a killer.
*Neve Campbell and Rose McGowan…. need I say more?
*If you get into a group of friends to watch this movie, it is much scarier.
*Although there are many horror movie clichés in SCREAM, they are also blatantly made fun of. It is hilarious.
*The bathroom scene where the cheerleader and her friend are talking about Sidney is ridiculous! The cheerleader is calling Sidney’s dead mom a skank and saying Sidney probably killed the teens.
*They call Jamie Lee Curtis the “scream queen”. TRUE.
*At the party, the “rules” of all horror movies are listed.
*Courtney Cox gets punched in the face.

Also, these great quotes help:

“You should never say ‘Who’s there?’. Don’t you watch scary movies? It’s a death wish. You might as well just come out here and investigate a strange noise or something!”

“What are you doing with a cellular telephone?”

“There’s always some stupid bullshit reason to kill your girlfriend.”

SCREAM is more than a cult classic, it was actually a huge commercial success, and it remains a fantastic Halloween movie.

I give it a 4/5.It is one of the best horror movies out there, but was much too obvious in my opinion.
