The crazy success of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has created the market for a slew of similarly themed books starring historical or fictional characters versus the Occult. The first of these to hit the big screen will be Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, ahead of the proto-generator Pride and Prejudice and Zombies which isn’t scheduled to come out until 2013. Well, the trailer is out and the first thing that’s apparent is that AL:VH is swinging for the fences.
Big budget, a pretty decent cast, the attachment of Tim Burton as producer, and a mid-summer release all point to expected success as far as the box office is concerned. And why wouldn’t American audiences get behind a kick-ass president who hunts down racist vampires in his spare time? Burton isn’t directing so you won’t see his favorite playthings Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter, but you will see some talented up and comers including Dominic Cooper who was brilliant in The Devil’s Double playing both Uday Hussein and his body double.
Benjamin Walker is the axe-wielding, sometimes bearded, sixteenth president and is accompanied by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a hotified Mary Todd. Rounding out the cast is some good character actors in Alan Tudyk (Firefly), Rufus Sewell (Dark City), Jimmi Simpson (Always Sunny) and of course the prerequisite hot super model vampiress in Erin Wasson.
As an aside you can also play some connect the dots and feel conflicted about the rumors of a Beetlejuice sequel. Seth Grahame-Smith, responsible for Prejudice and Lincoln, is apparently involved in developing a new Beetlejuice, and having Tim Burton on board for AL:VH might be just the springboard he needs to make it happen.
Timur Bekmambetov, try saying that three times fast, is the director of AL:VH and was likely chosen for his previous experience with gritty vampires in the breakout Russian hits Night and Day Watch and for his ability to handle Hollywood action flicks as he did with Wanted. Night Watch and Day Watch were both really cool so hopefully this will be a good sign of things to come for the vampire hunting president.
