First off, if you haven’t been watching E4’s Misfits, then I don’t like you as a person. You are probably no fun, you don’t enjoy British cussing, great characters or great stories. We already tried to turn you on to the show once which you can check out here. The first 2 series kicked my ass with humor, awkward moments, and awesome storytelling. Then news hit that Robert Sheehan (Nathan) would not be returning for the 3rd Series, which was upsetting.
I went into Series 3 expecting far different than what I was used to as the new character Rudy was introduced. I was not let down. The 3rd series continued delivering great episodes and Rudy was a welcome addition to the cast. Vulgar, funny, and with an interesting power, he replaced Nathan without replacing Nathan. Then the 3rd series ended and it was clear more changes were bound to happen. Let’s go over some of these changes.
First of all, pretty much the entire original cast is leaving the show. Iwan Rheon (Simon) and Antonia Thomas (Alisha) will be departing the show, which is kind of a no-brainer if you watched the Series 3 finale. I will miss Simon’s awkward heroism and Antonia’s ridiculous sexiness. And this…
What the hell was I talking about? Oh, right. Cast departures.Iwan Rheon spoke a bit about the development of his character throughout the series and more which you can check out here. Presumably both Iwan and Antonia are leaving to pursue further roles and develop their careers, but they will both be greatly missed. Their storyline has driven the show for a couple of seasons now, and it will be sad to see it end.
Announced shortly after was the fact that Lauren Socha was not returning, which may or may not be related to some recent legal troubles she has had. Huffington Post reports:
“Misfits” star Lauren Socha is leaving the popular Channel 4 teen drama and will not return for the fourth season. According to BBC, the BAFTA winner was sentenced to four months in prison after she admitted to racially aggravated assault on a taxi driver.
Channel 4 said in a statement that the arrest and Socha’s departure from the series are not related.
“A mutual decision was reached between Clerkenwell [Films, which produces “Misfits”] and Lauren earlier this year that she would not be returning for the fourth series,” Channel 4 said in a statement.
“You know what? Without sounding disrespectful, ‘Misfits’ is ‘Misfits,'” Socha told The Huffington Post via phone about the potential American version. “We’ve won the BAFTA. I’ve got a BAFTA. We don’t need to prove to anyone else. Obviously, they’re going to take it to a higher level, with a production team and stuff like that. If America wants to try and smash it, they can, but at the end of the day, they’ve got ‘Shameless’ and ‘The Office’ over there. Competition is absolutely nothing because with English telly, you start with something and then you leave it as that. And I think it’s going to be very difficult to try and get a job as Kelly in America. She’s so distinctive! I’m impossible to play! Good luck to it, though. I think I’ll be a bit gutted, but let’s see what they do.”
So with everyone but Rudy (Joseph Gilgun) and Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarret) departing the show, that obviously leaves some room for some new blood. for any other show I would assume this would kill it, but I think Misfits has the perfect scenario to allow for such a drastic move. Here’s a bit more information on the new cast members:
Earlier this year, a casting call went out for three new Misfits characters, to be introduced in the upcoming 4th season. We now know, thanks to ScreenTerrier, who will be playing two of the roles.
Nathan McMullen (Casualty, Shameless) will be playing the role of Finn, who, according to the casting call, “has a childlike naively optimistic view of life, he’s always eager to please and enthusiastic about life. Finn talks a lot and often uses this to try and talk himself out of difficult or awkward situations. He is very funny.”
Karla Crome’s (Hit and Miss) character, Jess, “is a kind of female version of Larry David – smart and articulate, She’s the person who will say the un-sayable, the person who’ll question social norms and etiquette. Jess hates people who bullshit and lie to her.”
The casting of the third new character, Alex, has yet to be announced. Alex is “the sexiest guy on the estate. He is super good looking, all the girls fancy him but for some reason he is very standoffish, he doesn’t seem interested in girls. Everyone reads this as being extremely suspicious and suspect it’s power related.”
No word yet on what the 4th Series will feature, but I could imagine it will have Curtis and Rudy somewhat mentoring the new breed of Misfits during community service, and will probably involve at least 2 murders of probation officers. Still waiting on any news from the proposed plans of a US remake that’s being developed by The O.C.‘s Josh Schwartz.
Here’s a fans look at some of the news we covered as well as a little bit on the previous seasons:
I will be waiting patiently for the 4th Series as I was pretty much instantly hooked to the show. If you haven’t checked it out yet make sure you pick up all available episodes because you won’t be able to stop watching it.
