With the announcement from CCI about Marvel’s Phase 2 of movies, the Thor sequel was kind of left in the dust behind some of the more enticing movies Marvel was planning. Captain America dropped the Winter Soldier bomb, along with the announcements of Ant Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy, so it’s pretty easy for Thor to get left behind.
But out of all the announcements, Thor: The Dark World is still left with the most mystery. We know which characters are coming back (pretty much all of them), and we know a villain will be Malekith the Accursed, played by Christopher Eccleston. What we don’t know is what the title references, general story ideas, or anything else really. Sure there is a lot of speculation out there, but the only concrete thing we know right now is that they are currently filming in Bourne Wood, England and have started constructing some sets.
TheMarySue has some great photos of that:
Allegedly the village will be a part of a battle between two realms, but this is unsubstantiated. Nice to see some actual sets as opposed to soundstages though, that bodes well for any movie.
Now let’s get on with the rumor report. It seems there are a few reports flying around that a colleague of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) who will have a large role in the movie will be none other than Dr. Stephen Strange. Strange will be portraying a role similar to Dr. Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) in the first film, and working with Foster on her studies of all things Asgard. Now we probably wouldn’t see Dr. Strange in all of his Sorcerer Supreme greatness, but I’m sure if this rumor turns out to be true that it will be a great introduction to a character who has been waiting for his own movie for a while now.
There are a couple of factors weighing against this rumor and at least one factor supporting it. First of all, principal photography is set to begin any day now, and they haven’t cast the role. or they are doing a great job at keeping the casting a secret. Second, While Marvel certainly loves to introduce their characters in other Marvel Studios movies, having Strange be such a huge part of Thor: The Dark World might take away from the star of the movie.
As to what might support this rumor? Remember in Thor when we are treated to the Asgardian vault and its treasure trove of easter egg goodness? Remember seeing this?
Some fans think that is the Orb of Agamotto, a magical item used exclusively by Dr. Strange. Some people of course don’t think it’s the Orb and is some kind of Tuning Fork… but let’s not get into the details quite yet. All of this is still heavily in the rumor territory and I wouldn’t want to waste time on too much speculation.
But you can. Who do you think would make a good Dr. Strange? I’ve heard a few rumors, such as Viggo Mortenson or Joel Edgerton, but I want to know who you think would make a great Dr. Strange.
