Grizzly’s Casting Couch: ‘X-Force’

With the recently rumored X-Force film in development with Fox, speculation has begun over the possible members of the team and of course, who would be playing said mutants. Obviously there are no characters confirmed at this early stage of development, but recent tidbits from director Jeff Wadlow and Fox’s Cinematic Universe Consultant Mark Millar concerning the construction of the team and its members have opened the door for a unique team of X-Force to tackle Hollywood with.

The Setup: X-Force, a team of mutants led by the mysterious time traveler known as Cable, takes on missions that threaten the future of mutantkind. Their latest mission is to find a missing group of New Mutants who will potentially be important to the X-Men in the future.  X-Force discovers that the kids have been kidnapped by Mr. Sinister, a mad mutant geneticist, who is served by the deadly mutant killers known as the Marauders. Awesome action ensues, the X-Force team grows as New Mutants join up, and a future trilogy is hinted at, with Cable’s long time foe Apocalypse as the overall villain.

While the roster may or may not include Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman) or Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds?), we are moving with the assumption that X-Force is based on creating a new franchise and wouldn’t hinge itself on the inclusion of either. Plus we are kind of tired of seeing Wolvie in every single X-movie. So let’s get to the cast that Brian Kronner and I put together, starting with the members of X-Force:

Cable – Stephen Lang

Stephen Lang as Cable in X-Force

This one was a pretty easy decision, as Stephen Lang has proven this is a role he can play. Whether it’s the tough-as-nails military type in Avatar, or the time traveling leader of a settlement dealing with dinosaurs in Terra Nova, glimpses of Cable shine through in both roles. There’s no doubt he looks the part, and he could probably pull off a cyborg arm like nobody’s business. The Party Crasher would do the role of Nathan Summers justice, and offer a perfect leader for this new team of mutants.

Domino – Gemma Arterton

Gemma Arterton as Domino in X-Force

A mainstay of almost all iterations of X-Force, Neena Thurman AKA Domino is a must for any X-Force movie. Her history is intertwined with Cable, and the two have even been an item over the years, but her role on the team has always been about her highly trained strategic skills, probability altering powers, and close friendships with the many members of the team. Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) has just the right look, attitude, and ability to kick ass that Domino exhibits daily.

Warpath – Eddie Spears

Eddie Spears as Warpath in X-Force

Another member of the original team of X-Force who survived all but the most recent versions, mixed with some time among the X-Men as well. Warpath was always the powerhouse of the group, and with James Proudstar’s involvement in X-Men: Days of Future Past (played by Booboo Stewart as what we assume is the 70’s version of Warpath) his role on the team seems likely. We went with Eddie Spears, who is fantastic on Hell on Wheels, and would fit the more grown up powerhouse role we would hope to see in X-Force.

Psylocke – Arden Cho

Arden Cho as Psylocke in X-Force

Betsy Braddock has a long and confusing history, which almost guarantees that her story will never be fully told on the big screen. After all, a British psychic who is blinded, turned into a spy for mystical ninjas, and then finally forced to trade bodies with a smoking hot Asian ninja assassin isn’t easily told on-screen. However, she plays a large role in recent X-Force storylines, including leading her own team in Marvel NOW’s Uncanny X-Force. We give the role to Arden Cho, who is no stranger to the camera, has a martial arts background, and recently played a super badass in The Baytown Outlaws.

X-23 – Lyndsy Fonseca

Lyndsy Fonseca as X-23 in X-Force

The perfect replacement for Jackman’s Wolverine, the female clone of Logan (Laura Kinney) would fit in well with this team of X-Force and provide a unique take on the fan favorite mutant. We cast Lyndsy Fonseca, who not only looks the part, but has proven to be a badass assassin on Nikita. She is also no stranger to comic book movies, with roles in both Kick-Ass films. X-23’s potential in Fox’s X-Men Cinematic Universe is huge, and could achieve the same level of stardom her comic book counterpart currently enjoys. Not to mention it would start the move away from Wolverine led X-Movies (at least until they reboot the character).

Now let’s take a look at the New Mutants, who made up most of the original team:

Cannonball – Max Thieriot

Max Thieriot as Cannonball in X-Force

Sam Guthrie has been a long time member of the X-Family, whether as a member of the New Mutants or as a founding member of X-Force. He eventually becomes a crucial member of Cyclops’ team, and is currently a member of the Avengers. Before all of that, he formed a father/son bond with Cable that lasted for years and played an integral part in both character’s growth. His ballistic powers would offer a very unique visual to the movie, and this would finally bring this mutant into the X-Universe. Max Thieriot (Bates Motel) has the ability to play the hayseed southern boy while showcasing the drive that makes Cannonball such an important X-Man.

Boom Boom – Katrina Bowden

Katrina Bowden as Boom Boom in X-Force

Tabitha Smith is all about attitude. She joined the New Mutants right before they transitioned into X-Force, where she thrived alongside her boyfriend, Cannonball. She has gone through many name changes over the years, from Boom Boom to Boomer to Meltdown to plain old Tabitha Smith. Her attitude mixed with her vulnerability has made her a great character to follow over the years through all her different teams and codenames. Katrina Bowden (Tucker & Dale vs Evil, 30 Rock) has the look, the snark, the talent, and the look. Yes, we mentioned her look twice.

Sunspot – Diego Boneta

Diego Boneta as Sunspot in X-Force

Roberto ‘Bobby’ DaCosta was an original member of the New Mutants, and eventually joined the newly formed X-Force. His solar-powered strength took many forms over the years, and he plays a large role as both a trusted friend of the team, and one of its greatest enemies in the form of Reignfire. His close friendship with Sam, visually striking powers and possible role in DoFP (still unconfirmed) all but guarantee his part in X-Force, and we think Diego Boneta would portray the pretty boy rich kid with a loyal heart perfectly.

Siryn – Sarah Bolger

Sarah Bolger as Siryn in X-Force

Theresa Cassidy is the daughter of Sean Cassidy AKA Banshee, who we first saw in X-Men: First Class. As Siryn, the fiery Irish lass exhibits similar powers and joins X-Force early, becoming a long-standing member of the team until it transitioned into the Wolverine-led strike force. Theresa was eventually one of the leaders of the team, and plays a major role with the newest version of X-Factor. Sarah Bolger (Once Upon a Time) has the look and grace, and would mesh well with our cinematic team of New Mutants. And with Banshee already established in the X-World, it’s easy to include her and her powers, which they showcased well in First Class.

And finally, let’s take a look at the villain of the piece:

Mr. Sinister – Jason Isaacs

Jason Isaacs as Mr. Sinister in X-Force

While Sinister isn’t exactly well-known as a villain of X-Force, he has always been connected to Cable and mutants in general, and it is about damn time that he made an appearance on the big screen. Sinister is a master geneticist who has a hand in so many major X-events that you never really know what his ultimate game is or how he is involved. He routinely clones and experiments on the mutant killers known as the Marauders, who would put up a great fight with X-Force. Jason Isaacs (The Patriot) has made a career of playing the creepy villains, and has the presence to bring Sinister to life on the big screen.

There were so many more characters we wanted to add to the main team, but unfortunately we’ve learned that these movies just can’t handle the huge cast of characters that the X-Men offer. Who would you like to see on the final cinematic team? What about your thoughts on our cast? Sound off in the comments section below!
