Many fans will be pleased to hear that Admiral Ackbar will be making an appearance in The Force Awakens. His involvement in the continuation to the Star Wars saga had remained purely in the realm of speculation until actor and puppeteer Tim Rose confirmed in an interview with The Australian he will again suit up to play the character from 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
Though he was able to confirm his return as everyone’s favorite Rebel admiral, he was frustrated at the amount of secrecy surrounding the film saying;
“out of the need to be secret, we’re not actually able to get everything we need to do our jobs as well as we could.”
Rose isn’t the only returning cast member grumbling about the amount of secrecy this time around. Anthony Daniels, also returning from the original trilogy to reprise his role as C-3PO in The Force Awakens voiced his frustrations about it in an interview with The Guardian last month:
“I said that I’d met so-and-so. An actor who plays a … thing in the film. A character. Immediately I received a message from Disney: ‘Remove the tweet! You’re not allowed to say that!’ Honestly. It’s a kind of Kremlin attitude.”
While Daniels has reprised his role as the golden protocol droid at virtually every turn, this is the first time that Rose has returned to the saga to play Ackbar. Peter Mayhew and Lawrence Kasdan are among some of the other Star Wars veterans (outside of the big three of course) that have returned for The Force Awakens. Mayhew is once again sporting the Chewbacca suit, while Kasdan returns to handling the screenwriting duties for the new movie after having penned the script for Return of the Jedi.
