Doctor Strange: Nemesis, Teacher, and Possible Love Interest All Cast

We reported earlier that actor Benedict Cumberbatch is donning the cape of the sorcerer supreme Doctor Stephen Strange in the movie of the same name. Now it’s been announced whom will be joining him in the Doctor Strange movie next November.

Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor is donning the mystic robes of Baron Mordo. As long-time comic book fans know, Mordo was first introduced as a confidant to Strange when the poor doctor was looking for a cure for his injured hands. Mordo quickly showed his true colors by silencing Strange with a spell when he figured out Mordo’s plans to take down their teacher, the Ancient One, and usurp his place. To get around the spell, Strange sincerely pledged himself to be the Ancient One’s student. The two were able to stop Mordo. The good, er, evil Baron would later time and time again return to challenge the truly good doctor who was given the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme of the Earth Dimension.

British actor Ejiofor is no stranger to the sci-fi and fantasy genre, having roles in Serenity and, more recently, The Martian. Currently his most well-known role was the lead in the semi-biographical movie, 12 Years a Slave, where he won an Oscar for Best Actor. The movie itself won three out of nine nominations – Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress.

Actress Rachel McAdams (True Detective) has also confirmed a lead role in Doctor Strange. Unfortunately, there is no information to what that role is at the time of this writing. Best guess is that she’ll play the love interest to Strange. If so, that narrows down the choice of ladies, especially if the movie dips into the comic book lore. There are two major contenders. The first, Clea, is the half-mortal daughter of Umar, ruler of the mystical Dark Dimension. She was both partner and lover to Strange. The doctor would later take on the witch Topaz as his apprentice as well as lover. Both lethal ladies would leave Strange to fight mystical threats in their own ways.

Actress Tilda Swinton of Constantine fame has already been confirmed for the role of the Ancient One. Those who are concerned about Swinton playing a part originally portrayed as male, likely haven’t seen her in Snowpiercer, where she proved what a chameleon she can be.

And finally, Hannibal Lecter himself, Mads Mikkelsen has reportedly joined the cast too, though that’s not really confirmed yet, and we don’t know whom he would be playing – Dormammu would be our guess though.

Finally, some pics and a video have leaked from filming in Nepal, here’s what we’ve seen so far…

So what are your thoughts on these latest announcements? On target, or do they need to be banished to the Dark Dimension? If the latter, whom would you like in the role(s)? As always, let us know in the comments below. And if you can’t get enough of Strange until the movie, you may want to check out the new Doctor Strange comic book series which launched last month.
