Suicide Squad; New Trailer and Poster Amp Up Excitement

Worst. Heroes. Ever.

Last night Warner Bros. dropped the newest trailer for the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, beautifully set to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which is now stuck in my head. This trailer, which has me quite a bit more excited than the first one did, shows us little more of the team, though the exact story is still a mystery.

Margot Robbie looks like she was perfectly cast as Harley, and the marketing has clearly made her the focus, but the rest of the cast is expected to be a strength too. Will Smith adds star power as Deadshot, Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) and Jared Leto (Joker) bring Oscar pedigree, and Joel Kinnaman (The Killing), Jai Courtney (Spartacus), and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Oz) have all proven to be strong assets on cable. Sprinkle in a Bat-Cameo from Affleck and the ensemble is pretty damn impressive, and that’s not even all of them.

Character wise, they’ve made some interesting choices, with lots of ties to the Bat and Gotham. Aside from the obvious Joker and Harley connections, Deadshot has a long history with the Dark Knight (see; Batman: Gotham Knight [2008], Batman: Assault on Arkham [2014]). Killer Croc is straight up pulled from the rogue’s gallery, and Katana was most recently seen replacing Robin as the Bat’s sidekick on Beware the Batman. Add in villainous Flash staple Captain Boomerang, Justice League Dark baddie Enchantress, Slipknot, and El Diablo, it makes for a pretty diverse and eccentric group.

The movie releases in August, and will join Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as the first parts of the new DC Entertainment connected movie universe. They are clearly taking a much darker route than Marvel’s MCU did.
