The first trailer for Showtime’s upcoming police drama City On A Hill was just released. Based on an original idea from executive producer Ben Affleck and creator Chuck MacLean, the new series is set in early 1990s Boston, where corruption and racism was the norm in local law enforcement. The show features Kevin Bacon, who has appeared in Boston-set projects before in films like Mystic River, Black Mass, and Patriots Day, and now returns to Beantown for this gritty new crime drama.
This 10-episode, series marks Bacon’s first time back on television as a regular since he appeared in Amazon’s I Love Dick. But in City On A Hill, Bacon lays the accent on thick as the lauded FBI agent skirting the law at every turn. The Showtime series will char the evolving relationship between an anti-corruption crusader assistant DA, played by Aldis Hodge, and Bacon’s character. When a series of armored car robberies erupts in the city’s Charlestown neighborhood, the two are forced to join forces to bring the crimes to an end.

Just from this short trailer, the series is already promising that race will be playing a significant role throughout the series, with Rohr painting Ward as an “affirmative action hire,” and shots showing Ward getting intentionally bumped into and glared at by members of the Boston Police Department.
The fictional drama also features Jonathan Tucker (incredibly underrated actor from Kingdom, Justified, and a Boston-native himself), Mark O’Brien (Halt and Catch Fire), Jill Hennessy (Crossing Jordan), Lauren E. Banks (Instinct), Amanda Clayton (Tyler Perry’s If Loving You Is Wrong), and Kevin Chapman (Brotherhood).
City On A Hill shot its pilot episode in Boston in 2017 and is scheduled to begin filming in New York and Boston in February. The series’ pilot was directed by Michael Cuesta and written by creator Chuck MacLean. Emmy winner Tom Fontana (Homicide: Life On The Street) will serve as the series showrunner.
Here’s the official description:
