Originally premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in the Midnight section, IFC Midnight has now unveiled the first teaser trailer for an acclaimed indie horror thriller titled Relic.
When elderly mother Edna (Robyn Nevin) inexplicably vanishes, her daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) rush to their family’s decaying country home, finding clues of her increasing dementia scattered around the house in her absence. After Edna returns just as mysteriously as she disappeared, Kay’s concern that her mother seems unwilling or unable to say where she’s been clashes with Sam’s unabashed enthusiasm to have her grandma back. As Edna’s behavior turns increasingly volatile, both begin to sense that an insidious presence in the house might be taking control of her.

Part family drama, part horror story, James’ debut seems poised to stick with audiences long after its last chilling surprise. The film is also bolstered by a small but strong cast that includes three powerhouse female stars in Mortimer, Heathcote, and Robyn Nevin. The film has been described as “bone-chilling,” “unnerving” and, shockingly enough, “beautiful” so to say the film has some smart twists is, to put it mildly. If the synopsis piques your interest you should be checking out Relic when it hits VOD very soon.
With Relic, first-time writer/director Natalie Erika James crafts an unforgettable new spin on the haunted-house movie. James is best known for her short films but also cut her craft as an assistant director on numerous projects. The screenplay is written by Natalie Erika James and Christian White.
IFC has been making waves this year. Their March release Swallow is being heralded as one of the best horror movies of the year, The Wretched just made headlines by topping the box office with an $85,000 haul at 21 drive-in movie theaters (long live the Drive-In), and now IFC is busy paving the way for one of the best titles on the 2020 Sundance Film Festival Midnight line-up with Relic.

IFC Midnight opens Natalie Erika James’ Relic in select US theaters (this will likely be the more-prominent-than-ever Drive-Ins) + on VOD starting July 10th in the middle of the summer.
