Episode 2 of this season was released on HBO Go this evening alongside the world premiere. So, along with tonight’s double feature, comes a double review!
The waiting is over! The much anticipated fourth season of True Blood has finally arrived! We can now know the fate of our beloved characters in Bon Temps, Louisiana.
We’ve already seen the first 8 minutes of this episode. You can read our review of this early preview here.
It’s been a bumpy road for the screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. After a slew of fickle directors (including David O. Russell and Mike White) backing out of the project, as directors do, it was finally announced that Craig Gillespie (Fright Night) will be taking the helm. Now, with the script reaching completion, we still have no definitive word on a female lead for the film.
Originally it was supposed to be Natalie Portman, which would have been awesome. But she had to back out (some garbage about having a baby), and will be on the project as producer. Then there were rumors of Mia Wasikowska, who recently played Jane Eyre in the film of the same name. One period piece under her belt, why not another? It doesn’t matter that I thought she was 14. After that, it was all about Anne Hathaway. That makes sense; because, really, what has Anne Hathaway not been in lately? If a film lately has a 20-something female lead, I’m actually to the point where I’m surprised when she’s not in it.
It now appears that we have moved on to Emma Stone. How is this any more definitive than any other rumors we’ve heard so far? Well, it isn’t. It would only be super awesome if it were true. She doesn’t necessarily strike me as a shoe-in for a film in the time period, but her role in Zombieland gives her a pretty good edge on this particular film. She’s beautiful, she’s talented, and she has experience with the undead. What more could you really ask for?
*Updated*
According to both Bleeding Cool and Deadline Emma Stone is now officially a no go for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies on film. Not much on why she isn’t doing the film but the bottom line is that she said no. That’s the bummer man.
It was announced early this morning that J. K. Rowling’s new pet project, ‘Pottermore,’ will be an online experience for Harry Potter fans. Not only will it help fans gain a better understanding of the world that she created, but it will also be a place for new readers, who didn’t experience Potter-Mania in its prime, to experience the world of Harry Potter first-hand.
According to the official press release:
In the new website, the storyline will be brought to life with sumptuous newly-commissioned illustrations and interactive ‘Moments’ through which you can navigate, starting with the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s (Sorcerer’s) Stone. On entering, you choose a magic username and begin your experience. As you move through the chapters, you can read and share exclusive writing from J.K. Rowling, and, just as Harry joins Hogwarts, so can you. You visit Diagon Alley, get sorted into a house, cast spells and mix potions to help your house compete for the House Cup.
In addition, she will be providing new information on characters, places, and objects in the Potter universe. ‘Pottermore‘ will also have an online store, where fans can purchase Harry Potter merchandise; and for the first time will be the exclusive place to purchase all seven installments in eBook form. Only a select few will get the chance to view the site before its wide release in October. Starting July 31, fans can enter their email address at the official website to earn the chance for an early entry. The rest of us will have to wait!
I must say, as a huge fan of the series, I am THRILLED. It’s hard to say whether or not this will replace her promised encyclopedia to the series, but this is better. It gives all of the eager fans a chance to learn more about the world they love, while adding the interactive aspect and experiencing the wizarding world first-hand. If done right, the website can give us Potter nerds a chance to continue our love of the series after the books have been written and the films have been released. I couldn’t be happier!
I’d be curious to know what you all think, fans of the books or not. Let us know in the comments!
Peter Jackson announced yesterday on his Facebook page that The Hobbit cast will be joined by Evangeline Lilly (Lost) and Barry Humphries (Dame Edna Everage). Besides a couple of no-name people playing rinky-dink parts, I think that about rounds out the casting for this movie. Phew! What a whirlwind it has been.
Tonight after the season finale of Game of Thrones, we were given an extended sneak peek of the upcoming season of True Blood! This was the first 8 minutes (we had previously seen the first three) of the premiere, which will air next week on HBO. Here’s the video if you missed it:
SPOILERS AHEAD…
THANK GOD we got the rest of this preview. I don’t know how ‘Grandpa Lumbergh’ lasted 20 years in fairy land, I could hardly stomach three minutes.
Anyway, after Sookie and her grandfather get reunited, Sookie starts to get glimpses of her surroundings that lead her to believe that things are not all that they seem. She uses her mind to tell her grandfather that they need to escape, that they are not safe there. This is always a neat little trick on Earth, where 1 in 2,542,698 people is a telepath. Sookie forgets, however, that she is in fairy land where mind reading is something everyone can do; so naturally, everyone hears her. We are then introduced to what I assume to be the Queen of the Fairies, who appears less than thrilled with Sookie and her refusal to take anything at face value.
By now, we’ve deduced along with Sookie that this fairy land is not all that it seems, and that this light fruit is responsible for making everything more beautiful. This Fairy Queen informs Sookie that because Bill came to the fairy land allegedly searching for more fairy blood to drink, the fairy race is no longer safe. As a result, all the fairies and humans with fairy descendants must be sealed off in this other realm, which looks a lot less appealing when you’re not tripping on fairy fruit.
Naturally, Sookie tries to escape; but is chased down by the fairies, who now look like trolls and can shoot purple lasers from their hands. The brother of Sookie’s “fairy godmother” (I guess that would make him her “fairy goduncle“) helps her and Lumbergh escape by talking them off a cliff, which is a portal that will take them home if they jump in before the crazy Fairy Queen seals it off.
Pretty weird. I’m honestly still on the fence about all this. Some of the previews of the new season get me really excited. Others tend to make me really nervous. Naturally, the scenes that get me the most excited are the ones that focus on the vampires, which I think are the lifeblood (pun intended) of the show. I would like to see more focus on the vampires, considering they are the center of the premise of the series. All this nonsense with fairies and witches and werewolves and shapeshifters gets stale.
Again, only time will tell what’s in store on True Blood. As long as there’s gore and intrigue, I’m on board. HBO doesn’t usually disappoint!
