Newly Released ‘Hellraiser’ Concept Art Hopefully Indicates Reboot Isn’t Dead!

You may or may not be aware, but Hellraiser, one of Dimension’s classic horror franchises, has kinda been stuck in direct to DVD/production hell (sorry), for quite a while now.

Even the characters in the movie agree.

While the 8th movie, Hellraiser: Hellworld seemed to finally put the nail in the coffin of the series, an attempt at a remake/reboot has been underway for years now. Initially the film was helmed by Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury, who were best known for ‘Inside’, but they departed from the project. It picked up steam again, when Pascal Laugier, who is most well known for his unflinchingly brutal ‘Martyrs’, a film that will deeply affect even the most jaded horror-hound set his sights on the film. It seemed like it was headed to being fast tracked, but he then left the project entirely as well. Then yet another team of directors picked up the project, Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer, but the studio wanted them to make it a watered down PG-13 affair, and goddamned HELLraiser should be anything but PG-13, as Lussier and Farmer expressed.

“We developed several versions for Dimension, but in the end we never saw eye to eye,” says Lussier. “The current story is extremely different from the story we pitched. It’s changed dramatically since we started, and it will probably change a lot more before it’s all over. Originally what they wanted was epic and dark, rated R. It was in our contract. So… if we do Hellraiser, it’s rated R; if they want to do PG-13 then they have to get rid of us.”

So thankfully we were spared some horrific PG-13 Hellraiser abomination, but this has again, unfortunately left the entire project on the back-back-back burner, destined to become whatever the celluloid version of Vaporware is. What am I getting at then? Well while the project does seem doomed, little tidbits here and there sprinkle out from the production being done, like the infamous “New Pinhead”, pictured below:

But more interestingly, and hopefully, there’s the recently released early concept art, for…. some version of Hellraiser, at some point of production, indicating just how much the conceptual team truly got what Hellraiser should be.

In July Paul Gerrard and Mike Le Han produced a teaser trailer to accompany the pitch document which has many more conceptual designs that revision Hellraiser. Paul designed the new look for Pinhead and was production designer on the shoot and Le Han pulled in all of his film resources and directed the teaser on the new Alex 4:3 camera with anamorphic lenses.

With a crew of 47 an over 100 bloodied extras, the shoot was completed and is now in the depths of post production with a massive amount of VFX work being undertaken. Method Studios, Fugitive Studios and Flipbook Animation are helming the chi/VFX with the talented Glen Southern designing the new Hellraiser box.

When the teaser is complete they’ll be presenting it to Dimension Films along with an outline of the first film story and conceptual art pitch document with the hope to work on rebooting the Hell raiser franchise and bringing it into the 21st Century.

That art is amazing. Some of it looks like a re-imagination of the Hell we saw in Hellbound: Hellraiser 2, which in my opinion, is the best of the series. Even concept art like this is something I’m chomping at the bit to see, because the Hellraiser franchise is one that is just begging to be brought back to life, with a creative mind behind it to explore all the brilliant ideas put out by the first two films. Hopefully, someone will pick it up soon, and make it happen for real this time.

Cloud Atlas: New Trailer and Images

Cloud Atlas, in case you haven’t heard of it yet, is an upcoming (allegedly) epic Adventure/Drama written and directed by Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy Wachowski. The film is based on the 2004 novel of the same name by David Mitchell (the author, not the comedian). With an ensemble cast to cover the film’s multiple story lines, Cloud Atlas is currently scheduled to be released on October 26, 2012.

Here’s the really long trailer:

Here’s the official synopsis:

“An epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution.”

I tend to joke about trailers which are different, but I actually really like the look of this, and the sheer ambition that it  demonstrates gives me hope for other films of its kind. It’s truly unique, and as complicated as a Steven Hawking documentary on black holes. I expect that it won’t do well in terms of money, but I hope it will be good for cult status as that really long movie that confused most who watch it, that’s all I ask.

Got a butt load of images for you now which range from wow! to really?

The film might be a new experience for some of these actors as each one has to play multiple roles, and as you just saw many different races and even futuristic people. This will either be fun in the bun, or be too much to handle we will soon be able to decide for ourselves this October. There’s been a little bit of debate over the length of the film, but it has now been confirmed as 160 minutes, which is interesting because it was apparently 230 minutes long – which is a significant cut for the new time and I hope it doesn’t affect the film negatively.

So finally what are your thoughts? Did you like the book? Do you think this adaptation will be as good as the book? Or, do you think it will ruin it like so many adaptation have before? All views are welcome.

Save the Dark Tower! Save the Dark Tower!

I’ve honestly run out of Dark Tower pictures from writing articles about how many times this damned is happening and then isn’t happening and then is happening again – 4/8/11, 5/6/11, 7/20/11 – but hey, there’s more casting news to report…. recasting that is. It would appear that ‘Maximus’ himself – Russell Crowe will be taking the place of Javier Bardem as the badass gunslinger and main character ‘Roland Deschain’. Of course this is all just speculation at this point.

Joss Whedon Delivers ‘Much Ado’ and Good Deeds; World Swoons

Oh.  My.  Word.

As if Joss Whedon wasn’t fantastic enough, he decided to go and make an interpretation of a Shakespeare classic.  Still seeking distribution and ready for festivals, Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing was filmed entirely on his own property and brings back long-time collaborators and acting talent of Nathan Fillion, Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Fran Kranz, Jillian Morgese, Sean Maher, Clark Gregg, Tom Lenk, and Reed Diamond.  The official press release says it’s going to be in black-and-white and that the original Shakespearean dialogue is “as fresh and as intoxicating as any being written.”

‘The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1’ Blu-Ray Releasing September 25th

It’s official. On September 25th 2012, multitudes of Bat-fans like myself will be able to experience the splendor that is Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns… in high definition! That’s right, the first part of the animated version, of perhaps the best Batman story out there will be available to watch over and over again. The Dark Knight Returns may be one of, if not the best Batman story out there, and also one of the best comic book stories as well.

Check out the trailer below as some of the best scenes from the comic are played out before our very eyes. In particular, Batman’s fierce brawl with the leader of the Mutants:

Definitely epic. The part with Batman rising out of the mud is simply chill inducing in it’s badassery. My favorite clip is probably the all too brief glimpse of the Joker’s lips smiling while he is watching the re-emergence of Batman unfold on the TV. As good as part one will be, part 2 will be the one that I’ll be most excited for in 2013.

Aside from what looks like top notch animation, the voice of Batman sounds pretty excellent even after being spoiled for years by the tremendous job Kevin Conroy has done. Peter Weller of Robocop fame seems to have the old man Batman voice nailed down tight. Weller also has a damn decent voice cast behind him. Ariel Winter from ABC’s Modern Family will be playing Robin, and Wade Williams and Michael McKean will also be voicing characters.

Anyone else as stoked as me about this release? Anyone never read the Dark Knight Returns and still interested? Sound off below!

“Thor 2: The Dark World” Finds a Villain in Doctor Who

If you didn’t get enough of the Frost Giants in the first Thor movie, then never fear! Now we are getting elves! But don’t worry, it’s not the fair-haired Orlando Bloom type, but dark elves who enjoy killing people and causing problems. None love this chaos more than the leader of said dark elves; Malekith the Accursed – who will be the new baddie in the Thor franchise! Check out this malevolent bastard below:

Okay so he looks a little ridiculous but have no fear, has Marvel Studios steered us wrong since starting to introduce the Avengers in their movies? I think not! Not only has the villain been announced but the actor set to portray him has as well. Christopher Eccleston of Doctor Who fame is set to play the Accursed of Svartalfheim. For those ignorant savages who don’t know, Svartalfheim is the seventh of the nine Asgardian realms and honestly I only know that because I googled it. Check out the article below from IGN on the casting of Eccleston:

Former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston has been cast as the primary villain Thor: The Dark World.

Deadline claims the 28 Days Later and Shallow Grave actor will play Malekith the Accursed in the Marvel sequel. Eccleston is no stranger to comic book-oriented fare having played Destro in G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and having a stint on the TV series Heroes.

Malekith the Accursed is the leader of the dark elves of Svartalfheim, who in the comics stole the Casket of Ancient Winters. (The casket can be seen in the first Thor movie.) Malekith also had a badass servant, Kurse, who ultimately turned on Malekith and killed him. The Malekith and Casket of Ancient Winters storyline was adapted for an episode of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

To me, Eccleston has played enough over the top villains to get this right. Those include Destro in that movie that claimed to be G.I. Joe, a sociopathic furniture lover Calitri in Gone in Sixty Seconds and the crazy ass Major in 28 Days Later. Eccleston is best known over in the great nation of the United Kingdom for his stint as the 9th Doctor on the MEGA-popular show Doctor Who. I for one am glad to see him added to the cast, and can’t wait to see what he brings to the table – But a lame villain like Malekith. Bring it on Marvel!
