Grizzly Review: Thor

I went into Thor with high expectations, but an underlying dread – hoping it didn’t suck mortal ass. Thankfully it didn’t, and I was treated to an excellent example of what a comic book movie should be: fast, fun and captivating. There wasn’t really a dull moment, whether it was Thor in Asgard fighting frost giants alongside Lady Sif and the Warriors Three, or on Midgard (Earth to you mortals) where Thor beats the crap out of hospital staff and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents while trying to comprehend and fit into our world.

From the beginning, when I started listening to Anthony Hopkins as Odin explain the history of the nine realms, I was dragged into those worlds and I loved every second of it.

The story seems simple: The Asgardians have a truce with the Frost Giants of the realm called ‘Jotunheim’ after a long war between them. However on Thor’s day, when he is named Odin’s heir, the Frost Giants try to steal back one of their ancient weapons from inside Asgard. They are stopped and Odin let’s it pass, while Thor being a bit of a hot head, thinks they should go to ‘Jotunheim’ and retaliate against the giants. Odin forbids it, but Thor, with some subtle nudging from his brother Loki, decides to go to ‘Jotunheim’ against Odin’s wishes to find out how the giants were able to get into Asgard.

After a fact-finding mission turns into an all out assault and what appears to be the beginning of a war, Odin and Thor have a falling out. Thor is stripped of his powers and banished to Earth. And now the stage is set for the movie to kick into full gear.

If you’re a newcomer to Thor you will really enjoy the story as it unfolds, and even as a casual fan or comic reader, the movie’s story progresses well and doesn’t fail to entertain. I have to admit, I was a little worried about the Asgard scenes feeling too fake and cheesy with the way that Thor and his brethren speak, but truthfully the Asgardian scenes had some of the best acting moments, overshadowing much that occurs on the Earth portion of the story.

Asgard also looked fantastic in every aspect including the city, structures, the wardrobe and the many set pieces. On the scenes that take place on Earth you’ll definitely be itching to see more of Asgard like I was, but the Earth scenes are by no means boring. I mean come on, you have Natalie Portman to look at!

asgard

I’m still surprised at how great of a cast that comic book movies now command these days. You’ve got a heavy hitter like Anthony Hopkins portraying the All-Father Odin and Renee Russo as Thor’s mother. Natalie Portman plays astrophysicist and love interest to Thor Jane Foster, with Stellan Skarsgård as one of her mentors and colleagues. That’s not to mention the rest of the supporting cast like Ray Stevenson as Volstagg and Jeremy Renner making an extended cameo as Hawkeye in one scene. Everyone was brilliant all the way around!

Chris Hemsworth definitely held his own in this movie, which is his first starring role. He played the smug and arrogant Thor and the serious take care of business God of Thunder when the time called for it. Some of his most entertaining scenes were the ones on Earth where he still thinks himself a God with powers, being utterly proven wrong. He smashes coffee mugs on the floor and goes to pet stores wanting a horse to travel on. It’s all pretty funny without being over the top silly. Let’s face it, this movie easily could have degenerated into a farce much like Masters of the Universe, but it really did impress me with how well done it was.

Was it Oscar material? No. Was it more than I went in expecting? Absolutely.

thorloki

Tom Hiddelton as Loki was probably right underneath if not on par with Hemsworth’s portrayal of his brother Thor in the movie. He played the part of good son and brother well and then the part of ultimate villain perfectly, but he wasn’t the generic villain archetype. Loki’s motivations were very human indeed and there was real emotion behind his word’s during the final battle between the two brothers.

I’m giving Thor a 4.5 out of 5 grizzlies. I really can’t think of anything I disliked about the movie and I would have given it full points if I was a hardcore Thor fan.

The acting was all top notch, the visuals stunning and story very well done. I’m actually inspired to pick up a few Thor comics and can’t wait for The Avengers and the eventual Thor 2 that will inevitably follow. I hope everyone else likes it as much as I did, and I recommend going to check it out. I think it would appeal to comic fans and non comic fans alike!

Comment below and let us know what you thought of the movie!

I just had to have a picture of Natalie Portman in this article…

Marvel Comic Review: X-men – Schism Prelude #1

Even though I am eagerly awaiting the Schism storyline in the X-men comic books, the first issue of the prelude to it was really nothing special.

The issue starts with some unknown threat about to hit Utopia and Cyclops and his top advisors including Wolverine and Magneto are debating on how to handle it: run or fight. Most have made their position clear and await Cyclops’ decision as he contemplates what to do.

New Trailer: ‘Conan The Barbarian’

After a REALLY huge let down of a teaser trailer, we are finally treated to the premiere of a full Conan The Barbarian preview! As you know the Party Crasher, AKA Stephen Lang, stars in the film as the villain Khalar Zym.

You see a few good glimpses of him, and the speaking parts paint him out to be one decadently evil dude. Rose McGowan looks pretty sinister too as Marique, some evil witch lookin’ bitch. I honestly couldn’t even tell it was her with that half balding head, because I had thought she had dropped out of the movie when was in the long development phase.

Conan himself is played by newcomer Jason Momoa, who also plays another Barbarian named Khal Drogo in the HBO fantasy series called Game of Thrones. You may have heard of it.

And now without further adieu, the trailer in all it’s barbaric party crashing glory:

I’m all in for this one. You give me babes, blades, monsters and the Party Crasher and I’m set to go. I think any Conan fan should be psyched for this movie by watching the trailer.

There’s always the potential even a movie with a good trailer can totally suck, but you never know until you see the final product. I’m just happy the movie is finally done and ready to go after it was in development hell for nearly a decade.

I would also advise anyone familiar with the “Youraagh” Scream to listen closely at the 00:49 and 1:49 marks in the trailer because they definitely used it.  What a glorious product of movie sound!

The Lord of the Rings: Big Screen Return – The Extended Editions

You can tell this little guy wants to go to all three movies!
You can tell this little guy wants to go to all three movies!

Are you having Middle Earth withdrawals? Do you find yourself at times wishing you had lots of hair on the top of your feet because you’re ready to see the two Hobbit films now? Well fear not because this summer, to coincide with the Blu Ray release, AMC theaters will be bringing the extended versions of the fantasy trilogy to their screens for the summer. According to an article at IGN, it’s not certain how long they will actually be in theaters:

The One Ring is reporting that AMC theaters will begin showing the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on June 14; The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers on June 21; and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King on June 28, all beginning at 7:00 p.m. local time. During each Fathom event, theater audiences will view nearly an hour of additional feature footage per film with additional and extended scenes that were carefully selected under the supervision of director Peter Jackson. June 28, 2011 is also when the trilogy appears on Blu-ray.

“The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Trilogy is a visual masterpiece that returns to the big screen to be experienced the way Peter Jackson intended: with the additional feature footage for each installment,” said Dan Diamond, vice president of NCM Fathom. “Combined with all-new introductions to each event by Jackson, the exceptional quality of digital cinema and the one-of-a-kind experience the movie theater offers, The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Event marks a new landmark in cinematic history.”

The first Hobbit movie doesn’t come out until late 2012, so I don’t know about the rest of you but that seems about five years away. I’ll be checking out all three of the extended versions (being called the director’s cuts for the theater release) when they hit theaters. I definitely need to re-watch Fellowship of The Ring in the cinema again, because I recall hating it the first time, and now it is my favorite of the three. Personally I think it has something to do with the crappy seats in the theater I went to and sitting through a three-hour movie in them.

Justified: Season 2 Finale – ‘Bloody Harlan’

The first season of Justified far exceeded my expectations. Raylan Givens delivered on every level and the show produced not one, but two of the best characters on television today. That first season ended with one of the best finales I’ve ever seen, and somehow season has not only managed to avoid being a let down, but actually turned out better than the first.

Last night that 2nd season came to an end in a ‘full circle’ kind of way, and I loved it. There aren’t many shows on anymore that can put you on the edge of your seat, but that’s wear I sat through the whole episode. The finale picks up with Raylan talking to Art about transferring to Glenco, which is a move to make Winona happy. Boyd requests a parlay with the Bennetts, and Loretta McCready disappears from her foster home.  These 3 events set up the rest of the episode.

First, we learn that Winona is prego. This explains some of why she doesn’t want Raylan in the field. So perhaps we’ll see a little Raylan in the future, though more likely I think Winona either get killed, leave Raylan, or lose the baby before that happens.

Next, during Boyd’s parlay with the Bennetts he anticipates their intentions and sets up ambushes at both Ava and Johnny’s houses. This results in the death squads sent to each location being executed by the Crowder gang. The explosion we saw in last weeks preview killed not Johnny Crowder as we expected, but the Bennett’s men instead.   And the assault on Ava’s house ended almost exclusively with Bennett clan deaths.

Almost – Dickie shot Ava before escaping.

Doyle receives a call from Dickie with the news while still at the parlay. This is Boyd and Arlo’s big “F U” moment with Mags and Doyle. The Bennett assault was a failure and Boyd now has the upper hand.

Next we see Loretta has not been kidnapped, but instead commissioned a ride to Harlan for a chance at revenge on the Bennetts for the murder of her father. Raylan learns of her intentions and heads to Harlan. This is when Raylan falls victim to Dickie’s baseball bat. When Raylan recovers consciousness he finds himself strung up by his ankle in Piñata position.

This is when things looked the worst for Raylan, that is until Boyd Crowder shows up with a gun and a whole lot of bad intention. He has just seen Ava’s gunshot wound and has some swift retribution planned for Dickie Bennett. After getting Raylan cut down from the tree, Boyd allows Dickie to live at Raylan’s behest in order to help find Loretta.

Raylan takes Dickie to play ‘Human Shield’ at the Bennett’s house. When he gets there Loretta is already inside with Mags and Raylan has to deal with Doyle. Doyle seems unconcerned with the danger posed to his brother and decides he has had enough of Marshall Givens.

This is about the time that Loretta, inside the house opens fire on Mags, shooting her in the leg. This gunfire causes Doyle’s men outside to open fire – hitting Raylan and nearly killing Dickie as well. With Raylan on the ground, Doyle decides to end the feud once and for all. This results in Marshall/Sniper Tim Gutterson blowing a hole in the Police Chief’s forehead…

This brings the entire Marshall service rushing in at Art’s command, who is there because of Winona’s plea for him to help Raylan. The injured Givens limps into the house to find the injured Mags at the end of Loretta’s gun barrel. After Raylan is able to talk the gun out of Loretta’s hand he sits down with Mags. And full circle we’ve come as Mags pours a couple of glasses of her famous Apple Pie drink and, like with Walt McCready, the glass for the drink proves to be fatal. This time however, Mags poisons herself. News of Doyle’s death and Dickie’s arrest, couple with Coover’s death and Loretta’s attempted murder, Mags decides it’s all too much.

The episode and season end with Raylan’s hand in hers, and the Bennett’s hold on Harlan County officially released. I don’t think many people expected Dickie to be the only Bennett to survive the season, but such is life. This sets things up for the 3rd season where we are sure to see Boyd reclaim the county as his own.

I truly believe this is be the best running series on Television and I already can’t wait for season 3…

Marvel Comic Review: Moon Knight #1

Kudos to Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev, they’ve done it again. This time it is with a Marvel character that I’ve never known much about except the fact that he looked cool as hell when I was in middle school. I speak of course about Moon Knight. If you’re not familiar with anything except what he looks like then never fear, because I didn’t either before today. But that will be explained below:
