The 10 Greatest James Bond Themes…

With the recent release of Skyfall, the 23rd (canon) James Bond movie, we thought we’d take a look at some of the things that have made the series so popular, and we’re gonna start with the theme songs. Below are what I consider to be the 10 best of 007’s themes, though probably not the 10 best movies…

Pinterest Finds: James Bond Edition

In honor of Skyfall, the newest James Bond film, opening this weekend, I’ve superseded the usual Geeky finds for an “All Bond, All the Time” edition. Of course with a character and franchise as pervasive in culture as James Bond, you can only imagine the plethora of things out there on the interwebs pertaining to him. I’ve just picked a few of my favorites.

Okay this one just made me laugh. Even though Playmobil are basically low rent LEGOs, they still serve a purpose. That purpose is being around to fill the “Toy that could sort of look like James Bond as a toy” slot.

Speaking of things that look like other things, someone needs to make a movie about older Ian Fleming and cast Geoffrey Rush in that movie. In this picture they look so alike it’s uncanny. There is a made-for-TV movie coming out over in the UK but they were obviously going for a much younger Ian Fleming as they cast Dominic Cooper. You know him, he played Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger. Anyways, listen to me now Hollywood, the world needs Geoffrey Rush as Ian Fleming. Make it so.

Are you a Bond fan who is getting married in the near future? Well thanks to Pinterest, I think I may have just found you the perfect wedding cake! Now your guests will get to experience what it feels like to claim the “piece with the dead guy”. Your wedding will be the talk of your social circle for years to come!

What to do if your significant other puts a kibosh on the cake of your dreams? Do you give up all hope that your wedding will have the 007 flair you’ve always hoped and dreamed of? No, silly! Just call a few friends over and spend an evening folding these napkins into the perfect tuxedo shape, complete with bowtie. Your friends and family will remember fondly your wedding as that one “with the lame ass napkins but did you see the cake at Susie and Bobby’s wedding? The one with the dead guy? It was amazing!

So we’ve taken care of the wedding, but what happens when you have a kid? Do you want your kid to be some schlub out on the playground wearing some lame t-shirt? Of course not. A quick look around Pinterest and you find the perfect outfit for your own little dapper darling, the baby tuxedo onesie. Just remember, he would like his bottle “shaken, not stirred”. I’m sorry, it couldn’t be avoided. Please know that I am ashamed of myself.

That handsomely dressed child will grow up and eventually need to learn the alphabet. Outside of this book, this poster might be the best way to teach your children the building blocks of language. If you do go this route, I would like to request that you someone record your child when you ask them what “P” stands for. Actually go ahead and record everyone around your child (preferably strangers) because I want to see the reactions as the cherub loudly proclaims “Pussy Galore!”

Okay, enough of the circle of life bullshit, let’s get into something that matters- video games. I can not be the only one around here who spent countless hours running around only to discover that Natalya Simonova has died yet again. As you can see from this pin, Pinterest is certainly not limited to housewares, decorating ideas, and clothing. Nope, we video game nerds have found ourselves a corner and enjoy sharing pictures just like this one from the classic N64 game, Goldeneye.

I want to meet this person and shake their hand. Not only did they sit and glue together pieces of paper to make a human (even though they used cheap ass RoseArt glue. I’ve got Playmobil and RoseArt crap together in one post, it’s like the Dollar Tree discount aisle around here.) but they had to first think, “you know what sounds like a great idea? I think I’m going to print off and then assemble a character from Goldeneye. Yeah, that’s what I’m going to do. Hello awesome Saturday!”

So I might have been exaggerating slightly when I said the previous guy was awesome with his “paper Bond” but this guy? Yea this guy is amazing. I have watched this three times just since sitting down and writing this, and truth be told, I’ll probably watch it again before I’m done. It’s mesmerizing. Not to mention such a great song.

The thing with Pinterest is this- there are sometimes that there are no words for what you find. After combing through thousands of pins related to James Bond and the 007 universe, I came across this one. I can’t even begin to formulate a correlation between this atrocity and James Bond. It bottles the mind.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this installment of “This Week’s Finds in the Pinterest Geek Category”, James Bond edition. One more before we part ways.

There are a lot of “bucket list” types of pins on Pinterest, including this one. Even though James Bond usually has an entire fleet of beautiful cars at his disposal, you can totally see him doing this. I think the next time I’m somewhere in which I can jump in a taxi as opposed to call a taxi and wait 45 minutes for them to drive 3 miles down the road, I’m going to do this.

Until next time, go out, see Skyfall and then come back and tell us what you thought of it.

Meet Q: Skyfall’s New Quartermaster

If you know anything about James Bond, you know that his best weapons are his wits and his suave, sophisticated manner. Besides that, however, his access to gadgetry is a major part of what makes him cool. If you know that, then you also are aware that “Q”, or Quartermaster, is the one who develops and supplies him with the cutting edge tech that helps him get the job done. In this brand new clip from Skyfall we meet Bond’s new Q. Clearly he’s…not quite what Bond was expecting. But, as they say, age ain’t nothin’ but a number.

Skyfall is due in theaters November 9, 2012.

Will the new Q be able to fill the shoes of those that came before? Do you like the new direction that the franchise is taking? Sound off in the comments below!

SNL: 38.3 – Daniel Craig/Muse

Well I’m really glad that the last episode of SNL, hosted by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, was good because this week it was just awful. I don’t know that awful is even strong enough a word for how bad this episode was. Usually I make two lists; one of good sketches, and another of bad sketches. This week there was not even an entire sketch in the good category, just one name. And it certainly wasn’t Daniel Craig’s.

Obviously, the cold open had to do with the debate. It was nice to see Chris Parnell back as the ineffective Jim Lehrer, but man alive this sketch was weak. Jay Pharaoh’s Obama impression is getting better but if the material and sketches don’t improve, I’d rather have Fred Armisen back as Commander-in-Chief. The monologue was just bad. Dear writers; if the phrase “I love this song but don’t know the name, can someone Shazaam it for me?” is what passes as a good joke these days, there is a problem. The catcalling construction workers wasn’t bad. It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t bad. It was just there and what seems to be a trend this season so far, it didn’t know when to quit. The “Bond Girls” fauxmercial was okay. I did enjoy Diane Keaton and Taran Killam in bed together. There was a moment where I was  wondering how many people out there watching would remember Lea Salonga and then was really confused when they kept going back to her. I’m ashamed to admit I even wondered out loud, “has Lea Salonga even done anything on tv or been in a movie recently?” Well as a matter of fact the last tv/movie thing she did was the 25th Anniversary concert of Les Miserables in 2010. My confusion only increased.

All that said- I’m an idiot. For it wasn’t Lea Salonga they were talking about at all. Rather it was that chick from Glee, Lea Michele. Once I realized that, those parts of the sketch made a lot more sense. They weren’t any better, but they made sense at least. Another sketch about the debate in which Jason Sudeikis was hysterical as a sleep deprived Chris Matthews.  Keenan Thompson is always fun as Al Sharpton but overall the sketch was a bore.

The happy Republican girl who said nothing but how happy she was this week was amusing in her simplicity. Next up was the pre-recorded “Long Island Medium” sketch and if there was a highlight of the night, this was probably it. That’s saying a lot. Kate McKinnon played the reality tv “star” who makes a living going up to random people and telling them about their loved ones who died. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen the show so I don’t know how spot on it was, but it was funny. Bobby Moynihan as the subject of one of the medium’s not-quite-so-accurate readings was the first time I laughed.

Unfortunately Bobby went from making me laugh to making me unintentionally impersonate my dog when he cocks his head to the side and gives me that “what the hell have you been smoking woman?” look. Seriously, what on earth was up with that space station sketch? It was just awkward and weird and I’m usually a fan of awkward and weird but it was not working for me. At all. It was interesting to hear an entire audience simultaneously let out an “awwww” when Fuzz Aldrin appeared. Thank god there was a cute cat because otherwise that sketch was a goner.

Musical Guest Time! It was Muse and they were good. During the first song though I could not get past the fact the dude was playing an ipad. Seriously.

I don’t know why I was surprised, hell you can damn near perform brain surgery nowadays after watching a few YouTube videos but this guitar/bass/iPad thing he had going was just fascinating to me. If I learned nothing else on Saturday Night it was this- America still loves Big Bird. I mean, who can blame us? Follow That Bird was one of the greatest movies of its time. Put Big Bird on Weekend Update? The tv watching nation will go nuts.

Did you know that Big Bird is on twitter? Well he sort of is, he just tweets through the general Sesame Street account though. Sharing is a big thing on Sesame Street. Did you also know that Grizzly Bomb is on twitter? Of course we are After Weekend Update I’m pretty sure Lorne Michaels spontaneously burst into flames and the entire cast was too distracted by it to actually put forth the effort to make the rest of the show watchable.

“Sorry Lot We Are” was just horrendous. When you are making references to movies that have been dead and gone for quite some time (The Full Monty and the even more obscure, Waking Ned Divinepeople are going to start to think you are phoning it in. Even more aggravating was this was the first time we got to see Aidy Bryant do more than one short line. I had started to wonder if she was even on the show anymore because we’ve seen plenty of Cecily Strong and Tim Robinson but unfortunately not much of Ms. Bryant. If “man in drag awkwardly rubbing themselves against other cast member” hadn’t been done in the last episode, it might have been better received this week. Then again, there is only so much of Fred Armisen’s crotchtal region that I want to see, so maybe not.

Apparently Fred’s crotch was the last straw because after another performance by Muse, it was a repeat of the “Undecided Voters” sketch from last week and that was all she wrote. Thank the angels and saints in heaven above. So all that was in my bad/not good column. The only thing in my good column? Kate McKinnon. She was all over this episode and even though it looked as if Vanessa McBrayer was being groomed as the next Kristin Wiig, Ms. McKinnon seems ready for that role. Despite the entire episode sucking as a whole, she had some bright moments. I’m looking forward to see her performances as the season goes on.

To sum up: episode was bad, Daniel Craig is pretty but should stay away from sketch comedy, Big Bird is a fan favorite, and I’m trying to forget this show happened and just look forward to October 13th when Christina Applegate hosts with musical guest Passion Pit.

James Bond Will Return in “Daniel Craig is Swimming in Money”

It looks like we’ll have to get used to a blond Bond for a little while longer. According to EmpireOnline and Deadline, Daniel Craig will be donning the tux and Walther PPK for the foreseeable future. Craig, James Bond since the fantastic 2006 Casino Royale, has signed on to be in at least two more 007 movies. This will take him into the 25th (official) film of the Ian Fleming character franchise. He will have done five Bond films by the end of his contract.

Sony Pictures also is involved in the deal with making the deal with the newly restructured MGM to co-produce the next couple of films. This is of no shock to no one because they definitely made a lot of money backing Daniel Craig as the spy since Casino Royale. Their plan is still to get a Bond film out every two years to capitalize on the money train they have been riding on since they had to wait for the new 007 film Skyfall for the last four years because Quantum of Solace arrived in theaters in late 2008.

This is a great decision of course. As much as Quantum of Solace blew open ass (Dr. Kronner and our group of friends almost got into a fight with a punk teen wearing a skullcap…probably would’ve been more entertaining in hindsight), Craig definitely offered a newer insight as the “blunt instrument” Bond, ready to take on all comers and still inhabit a dark side and brooding that would make Timothy Dalton jealous. Casino Royale remains a great “reboot” of the franchise and by the looks of it, Skyfall looks AMAZING. I am actually glad they took their time with this flick because Quantum felt rushed and lacked purpose. I hope the filmmakers took note of this. Of course, the cinematography in the trailer is just gorgeous and while that should be an obvious statement in a big budget flick, there seems to be a higher focus on the imagery that surrounds our favorite MI6 agent. Basically, I’m saying I’m geeked and Daniel Craig is able to jump back into the role and happy to see what other layers he can bring to James Bond. now that’s out-of-the-way, cue the Bond girls (including Eva Green for the Doc)!
