This is the Hero Express for September 20, 2011:
The Avengers Comic Tie-Ins – (BleedingCool)
What’s a superhero movie without a comic tie-in? It’s a superhero movie without a comic tie-in. Regardless, here’s a cool new promo pic of The Avengers from one of the comic tie-ins coming out before the movie. The pic is from Captain America: First Vengeance, but you can check out some of the other titles slated under the Road to the Avengers at the link.
The Avengers Film in New York – (ComicBookMovie)
Some more set photos from the filming of Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers has surfaced, and this time we get to see the whole cast on set. Some of the pictures show Thor and Loki in costume wielding some sort of Asgardian (presumably) container, while the rest of the cast is decked out in civvies.
Here’s what I saw being filmed: Thor and Loki dialogue scene. – Hawkeye, Black Widow and Banner exit a S.H.I.E.L.D. car. Widow hands Banner some kind of duffel bag. – Tony Stark shakes hands with Captain America and gets in his car (a badass convertible) with Banner, and they drive off. Cap gets on his bike and drives away in the other direction. There are a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on the street, standing guard as all of this happens. – Thor and Loki stand facing each other, each holding on to some kind of Asgardian device (you can see it in the pictures below). The entire rest of the team (Erik Selvig, Hawkeye, Widow, Stark, Ruffalo, Cap) stand around them in a circle. Loki and Thor disappear and the group looks up at them as they go up into the clouds. – Finally, some kind of dialogue scene between Loki, Widow and Hawkeye.
Clark Gregg Talks Iron Man 3, Skrulls and His Fate in The Avengers – (Splashpage)
There has been a lot of talk lately regarding both Skrulls and whether or not Agent Coulson will make it out alive after The Avengers. Anyone familiar with Whedon’s work knows he loves to kill off characters. But Gregg spoke about this rumor and more:
“I’ve read this! I’ve read this,” Gregg told Crave Online, speaking to the persistent rumors that Coulson could bite the dust in “The Avengers.” “I’m flattered that people care, but I wish they would stop saying this because they’re going to put it in somebody’s mind! I’m talking to them about doing ‘Iron Man 3’ right now, and somebody’s going ‘Maybe Agent Coulson should die,’ and I’m like, ‘Hey, hey, hey! This is the best job I’ve ever had! Stop talking about killing Agent Coulson off.'”
Speaking to the long standing rumors that the Skrulls are the villains of the movie, Gregg teased: “I’m taking down the Skrull armada single-handed!”
Lest you think he was giving up the goods, Gregg promptly added: “I’m just kidding. ‘Skrull armada single-handed…’ No, they’re Kree!”
Though he claimed to be kidding again, our money is on there being some truth to his comments — at this stage, all signs point to some kind of alien menace terrorizing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, whether it’s the Skrulls or Kree or another race entirely.
“There’s definitely new stuff,” he teased. “Much different, new stuff for Agent Coulson to do in this one. You know, it’s kind of ‘all hands on deck’ in terms of combating the threat that has shown up. And Joss… Joss is a master at taking what we know about each one of these characters, the superheroes and Agent Coulson, and building on what’s already there.”
I really hope Coulson is safe, as he is slowly becoming my favorite part of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). And he clearly knows of Skrulls and the Kree, so does that imply prior knowledge of Marvel’s aliens or did he read about them in the script? That is the big question. Here’s another one.
What is the Leviathian? – (CBM)
An Avengers call sheet pointed out not only the fact that those people in the Mo-Cap suits fighting Cap are actually aliens, but they will also be dealing with a CG Leviathan. Check out the call sheets below:
So what is Leviathan? Early rumors pointed to the name of a space ship, or even a giant sea monster which might point to some Atlantean involvement. All this tells us is that it is definitely CG. There’s a poll at the link of what seems to be the genreal public’s views on this mystery. While these rumors are still in the running, another theory has popped up which I think is kind of cool.
Whedon’s Playing Games With Us – (CBM)
If anyone has read Joss Whedon’s run on The Astonishing X-Men, the term of Leviathan is not a new one. in the comic it was used as a decoy plan to misdirect the aliens the X-Men are fighting. The article goes on to speculate that the aliens in The Avengers might be some sort of mash-up of the Breakworld aliens.
The word “Leviathan” is used as a Red Herring to fool the X-Men’s enemy, Ord. Doesn’t it seem like the kind of thing Joss Whedon might do? This is by no means any indication that the alien race in The Avengers are from the Breakworld (linking those two together would be a bit too much of a stretch I think) but I wouldn’t be at all shocked if we’ve all taken the word far too literally by thinking of it as mysterious creature from the sea, rather than the director simply using a code name from his days on Astonishing X-Men. Of course, my theory is equally as speculative, but I didn’t think that there would be any harm in bringing this up for you guys to think over. I mean, it may just be the actual name of a ship for all we know, but at this point, nothing is clear apart from the fact it’s NOT the camera and IS a CGI something or other. Now, while we’re on the subject of crazy theories, here’s something else I couldn’t help but notice. See the comparison below? The weapons do look kind of similar, eh?
So while I think that may be a bit of a stretch, at this point we know next to nothing about it. My thoughts? Its an alien ship named Leviathan, that seems to be the most likely rumor. And speaking of rumors…
Another Villain Rumor Picks Up Steam – (CBM)
A long time ago it was reported that a major villain might have a place in The Avengers, which would lead to speculation that one of the biggest storylines, not to mention one of the most devastating weapons of the Marvel U. would be featured in the movies. So if you really don’t want to know more about this then stop reading, but really, you’ve already come this far. It’s just a rumor.
OK, so…The other big villain we will see is THANOS. Latino Review broke that news in May but since then it has been pretty quiet regarding that. Well, according to my source, he is indeed in the film and the mysterious aliens everyone is talking about, is his army. As for the plot details, well, it will be very interesting…Basically Thanos makes a deal with Loki (like Hiddleston said in one interview that Loki makes some shady deals) to get him the Infinity Gauntlet. He trades his army for the Gauntlet. And that’s about it.
All right, now that would be huge. It also doesn’t even seem that far-fetched, but it would be quite an undertaking to properly accomplish. Both financially and cinematically. The Infinity Gauntlet is comprised of 6 Infinity Gems (Power, Soul, Mind, Reality, Time, Space), that when used together can pretty much do anything. ANYTHING. So while it would be cool to see, I don’t think it would fit into the semi-realistic world The Avengers is trying to uphold.
At least that’s what I originally thought. Then I remembered the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, which The Wozz and I reported on back at Bam!Kapow! which featured a look at… well… the picture speaks for itself.
Yea, that’s the Infinity Gauntlet. At the time I assumed it was going to either feature in Thor or just be a hidden easter egg. Now I don’t remember seeing it in Thor, so is there more to this rumor than we think?
And that’s it from this edition of the Hero Express! Next time we’ll take a look at some of the news, pics, and spoilers from The Dark Knight Rises!
Be sure to leave a comment and tell us your thoughts on any of the rumors flying around out there!
