Creed was that movie that snuck up on a lot of people. It dove into a franchise that began in the 70s and hadn’t been touched in nearly a decade. The story of Apollo Creed’s illegitimate son was a definitely a new take on the Rocky franchise, and it paid off well, as the movie was well liked by audiences and highly regarded by critics. So much so, it got an Oscar nomination. That’s right! Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Now, I don’t know how I feel about him receiving an Oscar nomination. I definitely liked the movie, but do I think Sylvester Stallone had an Oscar worthy performance? I’m leaning toward no. I think the general surprise of how good the movie was compared to expectation, (especially with this high and low franchise… I mean you guys saw Rocky V right?), and of course timing of when it came out, really helped push it into Oscar contention. So I’m probably not counting on a Rocky Balboa win at the Oscars (despite a win at the Golden Globes), but congratulations are still in order.
With all that in mind, the success of Creed has really made the studio push for a sequel. It was rumored a couple of weeks ago that the next movie could see Apollo Creed return in some capacity. While this would have been interesting, and I do believe Ryan Coolger could have pulled it off, it seems this may not come true after all. Much of the success of Creed was director, Ryan Coolger’s passion for the project and Rocky franchise. However, due to the studio’s push for Creed II, it doesn’t seem like Coolger will be able to direct it as he is in talks to be the director of Mavel’s Black Panther.
Hopefully the studio can find a director as equally, if not more passionate about the franchise, because I do think a sequel will suffer otherwise. Much like Rocky V, if they don’t find a director passionate enough, Creed II could suffer the fate of just another sequel money grab with little substance. I would hate to see that be the case as I really do think Creed brought back this franchise from the dead.
Additionally, if the story does not focus on Rocky and Apollo, which the more I think about, the more I don’t want, I would love to see some more focus on Michael B. Jordan. He’s a great young actor who seems to work really hard, and much like his character Adonis, deserves an expanded story and a franchise all his own.
