Penny Dreadful Teases Return to Haunt Your Television With New Trailer

When evil spreads, dread comes for us all.

If you haven’t yet seen it, Penny Dreadful started a bit slow, but has since proved itself to be very compelling genre television. The performances, beautiful costuming and sets, creepy atmosphere, and highly charged sexuality make for a potent potion. The show is a must for fans of Gothic literature. If you’ve already seen it, then you know all of this.

Eva Green’s enigmatic Vanessa Ives is the spoon that stirs that brew. She is joined by Timothy Dalton as Sir Malcolm Murray (father of Mina Harker of Dracula fame), Josh Hartnett as American sharpshooter (and more) Ethan Chandler, Harry Treadaway as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, Rory Kinnear as his monster, Reeve Carney as the ever-more-demented Dorian Gray, Billie Piper as Brona Croft (at least initially). The cast is simply stellar.

Now, after seasons focused on vampires and witches, complete with fleshy transfigurations and puppets possessed of throbbing brains, we look forward to season three. While we’ve already seen tidbits about what to expect — Patty Lupone’s return and the addition of Dr. Jekyll to the lineup among them — Showtime has also released a short preview to further whet our appetites.

Ms. Ives appears to be in a padded room, and dealing with the same internal devilish forces that make her story so creepy and compelling. Ethan looks more willing to give into the monster within, and Dorian is just as creepy as ever.

Showtime has revealed that the new, third season of its Gothic horror all-star mashup, Penny Dreadful, will begin Sunday, May 1 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
