Weekly Geeky ‘Pinterest’ Finds – Gift Edition

Hello, hello, hello! Welcome back to this week’s “Weekly Geeky Pinterest Finds!!!!!”. I hope everyone of the American persuasion had a great Thanksgiving, and if you aren’t American, I hope you had a great Thursday. Of course the passing of Thanksgiving means that Christmas shopping time has arrived! If you are anything like me, you have no idea what you are going to get anyone and will more than likely wait until the last possible moment, but maybe this week’s ‘Pinterest’ finds come in handy. Let’s dive right in and see if we can’t cross of a few people on your shopping list with some geeky gift ideas.

I don’t even wear earrings and I want these. How could I not? I mean come on, these are awesome. My only concern would be getting through daily errands while wearing them because surely everyone would feel the need to stop me and tell me how awesome my earrings were. Well that and I’d worry about losing an earlobe when a dog thought Joker was trying to attack my face and then decided to kill him first, but the chances of that happening are negligible so these are still awesome.

Do you have a friend or family member that recently moved into a new house or apartment? Looking for that perfect “housewarming and Christmas/holiday” gift combo? Look no further my friends for here it is- the Darth Vader Kitchen Utensil Caddy. Whether or not you use the force to cook those eggs, your spatula will look quite at home nestled snugly along with the whisk in Darth Vader’s head.

This is a must have for that movie lover on your list. If you were the type of gift giver that likes to put together a “complete package” you could include an iron, a bottle of aftershave, and perhaps some coupons for free pizza. It’s a shame I don’t know someone who’d appreciate that because what a great gift.

Do you know someone who is anxiously awaiting the return of Sherlock? Does that Sherlock fan also happen to have an iPhone? Well then look no further because this gift is just for them. You might want to gauge how crazy they are first though, because I’m sure gunshots through a wallpaper covered phone are not covered by the warranty.

My heart stopped when I saw this. On one hand, snuggie’s are sort of lame (she says while sitting wrapped in an Alabama snuggie) but on the other hand, Wonder Woman is amazing. I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that if you know someone who likes Wonder Woman enough that they even came to mind when you saw this, then it’s probably a safe bet that they’d enjoy it.

FOR THE HORDE!!! AND ART!! What a great gift for the World of Warcraft player in your life. Well it would probably help if they play Horde, but I daresay even an Alliance member would appreciate it. Well maybe not but it’s worth a shot. This is pretty damn cool, no matter who you play for.

Now this one is linked to an etsy page and the item has sold but if you are the least bit handy, I’m sure you could somehow figure out how to make this. If you do, tell me how because I want to get a gift for myself. This light switch would look amazing in my office. Yea, that’s right- light switch. You could have a childhood flashback of playing Pac-Man for hours at the arcade when you turn on the ceiling light. Awesome.

Say you’ve made a deal with your spouse/significant other/sibling/friend that you’d only do handmade gifts. And perhaps that person is a Lord of the Rings fan (because who isn’t?), well this is your lucky day because look what I found. This is a lembas bread holder. In other words, this is awesome. Even if you didn’t put forth the effort to make the lembas bread, I’m sure it would hold a peanut butter and jelly just as well.

Finally for all those Harry Potter fans in your life, a t-shirt that Cho Chang would totally rock. I’m not ashamed to admit that I really want this shirt. If a certain Santa were reading this, I’d be more than thrilled to find this under the tree.

There you have it! Hopefully this helped y’all with at least one person on your list. If not, then maybe you found some gift ideas for yourself, no shame in that. Until next time!

New Writing Team for ‘Flight of the Navigator’ Remake Is Probably a Good Thing

We’ve got news about the team chosen to write the remake of 80s classic Flight of the Navigator.  For those who not were not 80s children, Flight of the Navigator involves a young child who is abducted by aliens (the nice kind, not the probing kind) and returned eight years later to find his entire family has aged while he has not. It is a quintessential 80s film involving strong performances, a touching and interesting story line, and some great aliens.

JGL Might Play Batman in ‘Justice League’? Sources Say No…

Yeah, I know. That is clearly a picture of JGL as Nightwing and not Batman. Sorry, but I’ve been waiting a while to use that fan-made picture, so deal with it. I also know that I got your hopes up with the title only to immediately shatter them afterwards. You are not alone in this feeling. Earlier in the week some rumors started to fly that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would don the cape and cowl to portray Batman in Warner Bros. upcoming Justice League. Now I use the term upcoming very loosely, because we have all been through this before with a Justice League movie so I’m not putting too much stock into it getting made anytime soon.

Booster Gold, Coming Soon to a TV near you!

About a year ago, news came out that I completely missed. If you missed it as well, let me catch you up. Syfy ordered a script from Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg that was about DC Universe superhero, Booster Gold. That was the extent of the news. Nothing much was heard more of the project (as far as the internet is telling me because again, I missed all of this at the time) but Berlanti and Kreisberg had gone on to head up Arrow on the CW, which has been quite successful so far.

Then summer rolls around and IGN meets up with Kreisberg at Comic-Con and they ask him about the progress on Booster Gold:

If I were to get nothing else out of that conversation, it would be that Andrew Kreisberg and I should be friends. His favorites are Green Arrow and Booster Gold? Ah, a man after my own heart. The more exciting news though was that Booster Gold is still a thing. The summer continues, moves into early fall and Arrow premieres to great ratings. It’s easy to see why people would either start wondering about Booster Gold’s future or just forget about it altogether.

Thankfully IGN caught back up with Kreisberg recently and posted their interview with him today. He discusses the upcoming episodes of Arrow with Helena Bertinelli, aka The Huntress mainly, but at the end they asked Kreisberg about Booster Gold.

I got a little waylaid by Arrow. Booster Gold is going in the next couple weeks before Christmas. We’ll see what happens from there. It’s such a different project even though they’re both DC Comics properties. Booster is much more candy and popcorn, being about time travel and changing the future and being a superhero who can fly. But they’re both super-fun projects. As a lifelong DC Comics fan, I am beyond blessed to be working on these projects with all these amazing characters.

I for one, am happy he mentioned that Arrow and Booster Gold are very different. As much as I like the “Dark Knight” angle that Arrow has taken, a similar path would not work for a character like Booster Gold. He’s much flashier and in the spotlight than Oliver Queen. Especially if they are starting the show with Booster Gold as a new superhero. Granted if they were to jump into his story line right now it’d be different as he has grown as a character, but he still would not be the “in the shadows with a bow and arrow” type that Arrow is.

They haven’t released any details of the show beyond these few blurbs, but one has to imagine that it would include Blue Beetle which will make me just giddy. The relationship between Booster Gold and Blue Beetle is one of my favorites in all of the DC Universe.

Of course no mention of Booster Gold would be complete without Skeets. Let’s all gather together and say a prayer that they make Skeets an actual robot that could have done security patrols around a museum unlike the incredibly lame earpiece AI that the Smallville interpretation of Booster Gold wore.

I think if you are a DC fan, you should be excited by this. Marvel has their big movies and everything but DC has ruled the TV realm in recent years. No matter what you think of Booster Gold (and sadly there are people who do not like him, even some here though they shall remain nameless for fear of Booster Gold fans revolting against them), you can’t deny that he has the possibility of bringing in new fans to DC Comics. More people reading and supporting the comics industry, no matter who they are reading, is always a good thing. Of course there is great potential for disaster as well, but perhaps we should all just let it come to fruition and then we can complain about how awful it is.

Now that I’m aware that this is even a thing, I’ll be waiting with bated breath for more news. Of course if we find any, we’ll share it with you so stay tuned!

First Trailer for ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ (nee Killer)

Predicated on the success of such films as Snow White and the Huntsman, Mirror Mirror and the Television series Grimm we get a peek into another fairy tale turned Hollywood glamorfest in Jack the Giant Slayer (no longer a non-PC killer). The feature trailer is out and at first look is pretty impressive.

You’ve got Bryan Singer Directing, who will eternally be dear to my heart because of The Usual Suspects, but is probably better known for the X-Men series at this point. The movie stars great character actors in Ewan McGregor, Ian McShane and Stanley Tucci, and rising young stars in Eleanor Tomlinson and Nicholas Hoult. Sounds like a recipe for success especially with Singer collaborator Christopher McQuarie, The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie, on board with screenplay credits.

The story, of course, is a jacked up version of Jack and the Beanstalk resplendent with magic beans and everything. Bryan Singer must have liked Nicholas Hoult’s work as Beast in the X-Men prequels as he gets the starring role in this film as Jack, whom apparently eventually slays some Giants. Speaking of reunions Ewan McGregor, the king’s right hand man, is reunited with Trainspotting cohort Ewen Bremner whom I must assume is playing a Giant with an indecipherable Welsh accent. Ian McShane, the famously bilesome ‘Al Swearengen‘, is the king of this realm and it is his daughter, the princess (Tomlinson) who finds herself up the beanstalk, as it were,  in need of rescue. Tucci gets the role of the villain it seems, a human cohort of the Giants who riles them to take back the realm of men.

Altogether in scope and cast this film seems to have a lot going for it despite the absurdity of it’s subject. The Giants look pretty impressive, but like all things special effectery you hope they don’t get too much in the way of the storyline. It’s going to be a bit of a wait for anyone who’s genuinely excited about this project as it isn’t scheduled for release until the Summer of next year, but I would expect to see this trailer or an updated one featured on the big screen before any screening of The Hobbit this Christmas.

All Superheroes Must Die: ‘Saw’ meets ‘The Running Man’…with Superheroes?

We have some information on an interesting new movie called All Superheroes Must Die. Before I go into too much detail of the story, here is the teaser trailer to give you an idea of what type of film director Jason Trost has made.

Looks pretty interesting does it not? From the get go it is action packed and has a very dark edge to it. Here is the full trailer which gives a lot more information away.

Now this looks like an incredibly exciting concept for a film. The low tech approach to the superheroes is probably to do with budgetary reasons, but I think in this case it will actually work in the films favor, because it gives it a Kick Ass feel to it. Young (possibly inexperienced) superheroes fighting against a tournament of death with what seems like no powers, has must see written all over it. For the superhero movie genre this is a new way of thinking. But there are parallels to other movies as well. The first that springs to mind is the Saw franchise. An older main villain who has set a series of life threatening traps involving civilians which look like they will go off unless the superhero does something they don’t really want to do. Yes this has all the makings of a Saw meets Kick Ass extravaganza. The photography has that very dark and grainy look we all associate with Saw movies as well.

all superheroes must die heroes

The more exciting thing I noticed however was how it felt a lot like The Running Man. There are at least two super villains in here, one pumped up fighter in a massive homemade wrestling ring and a psycho Uncle Sam with a flame thrower. I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg for the super villains in this movie. The personalized settings for each villain and what looks like their own mode of killing (brute strength and fire) certainly harks back to this classic 80’s movie.

The inclusion of a sinister, yet calm villain played by James Remar (Dexter and The Warriors) looks to be a great casting choice. What I noticed about his character is he seems a lot like the assassin Arcade from Marvel Comics. In the comics he would torment the heroes by putting them into killer challenges, all involving them having to figure out a way of not getting murdered. They both even have a bow tie (though to be fair Arcades is a lot bigger).

All this in just a short 1 minute and 30 second trailer! This movie has a release date of January time, but it is unclear if or how long it will have a cinema release for. No matter what happens, on its release this is a film to look out for in the future.
