Check Out the Original Parody that Started Rick and Morty

Three seasons in, it’s easy to forget that Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty started as a Back to the Future parody, starring Justin Roiland as both Doc and Mharti, who eventually became, well, you know. Where the final product has been lauded for its cleverness, creativity, and ingenuity, this 4-minute short – though it does share some similarities with the series it eventually inspired including little subtleties like the way characters’ lips sag when they aren’t talking – is the complete antithesis of that, wherein the punchline to every single joke is just Mharti licking Doc’s balls.

According to a write-up in Vice:

Creator Justin Roiland stated the original short was “a way to poke fun at the idea of getting cease and desist letters.” Back in October 2006, he wanted to call the short, Back to the Future: The New Official Universal Studios Cartoon Featuring the New Doc Brown and Marty McFly in order to “troll” Universal Pictures. Timespace travel, and general weirdness have been strong themes for Roiland, who first started making pilots for Channel 101, MTV2, Acceptable TV, and Cartoon Network. Even in his early work, you can see the beginnings of what would become Rick and Morty, from the character designsvoices, to even the opening theme song. Anyway, enjoy The Real Adventures of Doc and Mharti, but keep your tongue off the balls of old dudes.

It’s interesting to point out that Rick and Morty has always refused to do a time travel episode, stating the lack of agreeable science on the subject. So, with that in mind, Roiland’s contribution to Rick and Morty is more to do with characters and using his voice as a weapon of pure comedy, which allowed Dan Harmon to come in, tighten up the loose screws, and do something interesting with the universe Roiland had been creating. In a way, Harmon and Roiland are much like Rick and Morty, themselves, and the difference between this short and the final show really brings that to light.

YouTube has the edited version (below), or if you really want to see the whole thing, which gets a little pornographic, you can check it out at Vimeo.

Be sure to watch Rick and Morty on Adult Swim every Sunday at 11:30 PM! There’s only a couple of episodes left this season!

Watch Sci-Fi’s Finest Share A Drink Or Two In This Star Wars Mash Up Video

In any film fans cinematic history they will no doubt have seen at least one great science fiction movie. Some of these movies will have released in their lifetime, while others needed to be sought out. But no matter what era they are made in, or how they became a part of our film lexicon, the best ones still have that sense of awe and magical wonder about them that makes them something quite special.

As a fan of the genre myself, I am always looking out for videos that give me that aforementioned buzz. So when I came across this unique mash-up video, the Sci-Fi nerd in me was doing cartwheels of joy (figuratively not literally, I am much too heavy for that). World Wide Interweb, the creators of the video in question are no strangers to the mash-up and compilation video it seems. Their Daily Motion page has over a hundred of these videos, all covering various aspects of entertainment.

30 Years Of Time Traveling: A YouTube Celebration of Back To The Future

In 1985 Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale unleashed something incredible into the cinematic time stream. That something was a time travelling DeLorean. Of course this is when the now iconic science fiction comedy Back to the Future was released, and even though it only spawned 3 movies, it has still managed to capture our hearts and imaginations, as well as giving us a ruddy good laugh at the same time.

Toy Fair 2012: Lego, Hulk Hands, & HOVERBOARDS!

Toy Fair 2012 wraps up today in the city that never sleeps and from action figures to high-tech toys to creepy Barbies that take photos and then display them on their stomach there’s something for everyone.

Always staying relevant and taking it to the next level is LEGO who debuted a whole bunch of Lord of the Rings activity sets as well as sets for The Avengers and Deadpool.

LEGO’s ninja-themed playset NINJAGO Fire Temple was good enough to win Activity Toy of the Year award but makes me glad I don’t have kids yet when I see the $120 price tag. Yikes!

Perhaps one of the weirdest/coolest/most useless items available this year is the opportunity to pre-order an authentic replica Back to the Future hover board! It does disclaim actual hovering but does allow you to release your inner Marty McFly for what is still an undisclosed price until early March.

Bored to Death – Season 3 Premiere: “The Blonde in the Woods” Review

Around here, regular readers will most likely know the affinity I have towards the Film Noir genre and shows like Femme Fatales. Well, for me the best of said genre is the classic P.I. stories, and even modernized versions like we saw in the 80s with Moonlighting and more recently with Veronica Mars.

Moonlighting, Bruce Willis, Veronica Mars, Kristen Bell, Femme Fatales

Nike to Produce Marty McFly’s Shoes?

It’s the best idea Nike has had in years, and it’s not at all new. In 1989 film fans everywhere flocked to see Back to the Future: Part II, sequel to the single greatest film ever made. In said film, Marty McFly traveled though time to the year 2015. The future was filled with 3D sequels to movies, books sold in antique shops, and shoes with automatic laces. And while 3D movies are everywhere now, and bookstores are closing left and right, we still hadn’t nailed down the intricacies of the ‘auto lace’. Untill now.

This is from The High Definate:

Last year, word got out that legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield and company filed a patent for an Automatic Lacing System similar to the technology featured on the “Marty McFly” Nike Air Mags in Back To The Future II. Since then, fanboys and sneakerheads alike have been speculating that Nike was working on a real-life version of the Air Mags. Speculate no more, because those shits are coming.

Around midnight tonight, members of the media and the fashion world got calls from Nike inviting them out to Los Angeles for a top-secret special event, hosted by Hatfield himself. Following the calls, a video by a YouTube user named DocEmmettBrown88 dropped the following video, showing what appears to be “shelves and shelves of 2011 Nike MAG shoes”.

Here’s the video…

This news was sent to me by several people over the last 12 hours or so as most everyone knows my affinity for the movies, and I wouldn’t be true to myself if this really comes out and I don’t buy a pair. So for the first time ever, Nike is guaranteed some of my cash. Or rather some of my Credit Card company’s cash…

Now bring on that hoverboard!
