Is Guillermo del Toro on for “Heaven Sent”?

Don’t you hate it when someone says something about you and then another person says that you didn’t really say that and then you have to tell people that you did say the first thing and don’t know why anyone is saying you didn’t? Welcome to Guillermo del Toro’s weekend.

On Thursday, November 1st, the Latino Review posted that del Toro was talking with Warner Brothers about a project involving characters from the DC Universe. By Friday, November 2nd, various other outlets had picked up the story. Of course, people start seeing this and getting excited, but who wouldn’t be excited? Marvel has certainly found big success with their ensemble The Avengers, so DC fans are starting to feel it’s their turn.

But wait, it’s now November 3rd and with a new day comes new news. It seems that Pietro Filipponi over at The Daily Blam has talked to Mr. del Toro and says that there is “no truth” to the rumor that del Toro is interested in directing the superhero movie.

Talk about letting the air out of your sails. Before you can even fully feel the disappointment of this news, it’s 15 hours later and Guillermo del Toro himself is responding to the story in the forums of his own site saying that he never said that, and he would love to do the project!

So what is this project everyone has been talking about? An ensemble cast of DC superheroes? Could it be?  Maybe?

No. It’s not those characters. Even though Warner Brothers is saying that they are a go for The Justice League to start filming in 2013, it won’t be with Mr. del Toro at the helm. No, the DC characters that del Toro is interested in are more of the lesser known variety.

Referred to as “Heaven Sent”, the project would be centered around the “magical” characters in the DC Universe; Swamp Thing, The Spectre, ZatannaZatara, Phantom Stranger, John Constantine, Deadman, and more!

As awesome as Justice League will be (it will be awesome, it has to be, please angels in heaven above let it be awesome) this idea has potential to be amazing. Seriously, when was the last time The Spectre made news? When did you last actively think about Zatara? Not to mention, just imagine the casting discussions to be had! I’m kicking off the official campaign for Timothy Dalton as The Phantom Stranger.

Sound off in the comments below! Are you excited by this possible project? Who would you cast? Mr. del Toro is the man of 10,000 irons in the fire but we can always hope that this one will pan out.

Arrow: 1.04- “An Innocent Man”

If last week showed us nothing else, it established that the people behind Arrow have zero issue with cliff hangers. Boy, what a cliffhanger it was. Granted it wasn’t anything like “who shot JR?” but for a third episode of a first season? It was pretty solid.

Thankfully they started off this week right where they left off and we see Diggle wake up with an awesome “wtf just happened here?” look on his face. WTF indeed John. I really did like how instead of hearing Oliver’s speech and immediately jumping up asking “golly gee willikers Oliver, what hijinks will we find ourselves in next?!?” he just rolls his eyes and asks when Oliver took archer classes. Way to go John, I approve of your reaction.

I also approve of this:

Arrow An Innocent Man

It’s a mosaic of Oliver’s face made up of pictures of scenes from the episode. Pretty cool. Click here for their site, they have quite a few of them.

Arrow An Innocent Man
You tell him Oliver!

Back to it! If Yao Fei continues to do things like the classic “you don’t understand me but maybe if I say it louder and with more force that might help”, I will be forced to love him forever. The look on his face the last time he said whatever word it was, made me laugh like a madwoman. Then to find out he speaks English! Ah, that was just perfect.

This episode didn’t have a bad guy from the DC Universe but rather someone from “the book”. This week’s selection is named Jason Brodeur and he is a CEO who is the least prepared for anything bad to happen that I’ve ever seen. Seriously, if you own a big company, especially one that deals in chemicals, wouldn’t you have an “I’m dumping toxic waste and now that waste is hitting the fan” contingency plan? One that doesn’t involve killing the whistle-blower and blaming it on the husband? He also seemed as if he was completely caught off guard when Arrow came after him. Hmmm…. for three weeks now (in our world at least, I don’t know that they’ve given us a timeline on the Arrow world) there’s been a vigilante hunting down corrupt and evil business men and you are surprised he showed up for you? Come on now.

Speaking of people who aren’t prepared for the consequences to their own actions, Oliver, you need to work on your secret superhero-ness. Mainly the secret part. Have you not watched Batman ever? The Batcave is hidden for a reason.  That reason is hello! you don’t want anyone to know you are Arrow! Keep hiding your shit in the stairwell where there are cameras and you aren’t going to remain a secret for long. Or worse yet, you could get your ass arrested. I’m so disappointed in you. You may have learned to speak Russian and “Chinese” and how to use a bow and arrow but apparently Yao Fei failed in passing along “Superhero 101”.

Arrow An Innocent Man

I do however, have to commend the use of the voice changer. Very heads-up play. We all know that the voice would have given it away big time. It’s not like she COULDN’T SEE YOUR FACE FROM TEN FEET AWAY! I was unaware of the fact that apparently Laurel suffers from night blindness. Either that or that smeared on mask is doing an incredible job. There are a lot of things I’m willing to go fourth wall on but come on, this was a bit ridiculous.

Last week my ire was all for Thea, this week it’s Laurel. In addition to the aforementioned inability to recognize her former fiance when he’s standing right next to her, she had quite a few moments where I just couldn’t do anything but shake my head. On one hand, it’s cute that she went to the house to check on Oliver after the shooting but come on, you guys aren’t together anymore so why don’t we go ahead and skip the sanctimonious speeches. I understand it was needed to show the difference in her reaction to Oliver vs. Arrow but still, blech. Then you would think a cop’s kid would be a little bit more wary of an apartment that has no power. You would also think that maybe she wouldn’t keep her gun in an unlocked drawer! Gun safety, gun safety!!

Laurel Lance Arrow An Innocent Man

Last I checked, Laurel is a lawyer in the legal aid office. I’m not up to date on my “what lawyers do what” but I daresay there aren’t many that go from suing a big time business owner to a class action suit against the manufacturer of smoke alarms to death penalty cases. Laurel better become the Black Canary soon because she’s getting on my nerves. At least we didn’t have to deal with “good” Merlyn this week.

Best parts of the episode? Three names; Walter, Felicity, and Digg.

Oh, Walter you smart, smart man. I knew the minute you mentioned that 2.6 million that something was fishy with Moira and so did you. Now you just need to figure out what the deal with that shipwreck is. Why would Moira keep that a secret? Same reason she had Oliver beat up, obviously, but now there are more layers that need to be investigated. Oooohhh, the intrigue! Not to mention, why did she call it Tempest? Is this incredibly handsome “Well Dressed Man” perhaps the Tempest/aka Garth? But if that’s the case then Garth would have gone bad, and what if Moira and the beautiful man aren’t necessarily bad guys? What if they are just misunderstood? All I know is, I can’t wait to find out.

Arrow An Innocent Man

If I were running the show I’d dump Thea and Laurel and just have the show be all Felicity, all the time. She is just so freaking adorable! I mean seriously, she has one scene in the entire episode and she just steals it outright. However, when she first showed up all I could think was “how on earth did this chick from IT just waltz into the CEO’s office without the slightest of problems?”, but thankfully she mentioned Walter calling her up to his office. Whew, that would have bothered me for awhile. I tend to worry about really important things like that.

Arrow An Innocent Man Felicity Smoak

No surprise, best parts of the episode belong to John Diggle. First he basically told Oliver to shove his head up his ass because there was no way he was going to be a  criminal. Then he quit! Of course that was inevitable but it did allow some comic relief with his replacement. Dude was a bit of an idiot, but at least he had a “firm grip”. When he returned to Big Belly Burgers the “did Deadshot kill John’s brother?” question was answered. Apparently he did, which is good to know. This of course was the push John needed to go ahead and join Oliver. I do wonder though, is he Alfred? He did say he wasn’t a sidekick so is he someone they just added to the Green Arrow world or is he loosely based on someone else? There is no way he can be Speedy. I mean he can, but I won’t be happy about it. Lord knows the writers want to keep me happy!

Arrow An Innocent ManIf John’s sister-in-law had an issue with him doing personal security I can only imagine how less than thrilled she’s going to be with “superhero’s sidekick but not a sidekick sidekick” job he’s got now. I wonder if it comes with dental.

Minus the Laurel annoyances, I really loved this episode. I think it’s a little ballsy how fast they are moving the plot along but I like it. They could have drug out the “Ollie ditches his bodyguard everyday” schtick for at least a couple more episodes but at least this way we’ll get to see more of Diggle than just his reaction to being given the slip.

There wasn’t a whole lot of references to the DC Universe in this episode. Well there might have been but I only caught a few. If you follow the Flash then you know about Iron Heights Penitentiary. Apparently the criminals housed there are so dumb they can’t figure out that if you walk in a single file or even in pairs everyone will fit through the door. They looked like a bunch of doofuses piled up in the doorway. Then of course there was the “10:15 to Bludhaven”. Everyone knows about Bludhaven. It does beg the question, if Bludhaven is just a train ride away then maybe Nightwing will be coming to Starling City? Oh yes please!

I’m fairly certain it has nothing to do with DC Universe but I did catch one of the names on the list. None other than Charles Davenport. Hmmm, yes that is a man that perhaps the Arrow should pay a visit. Yikes.

Episode 5/”Damaged” airs on November 7th.

*I’m aware that I promised a shirtless Oliver Queen picture each week but sadly there just wasn’t any shirtless scenes this week. The closest we got was pensive Oliver.

Superman & Spider-Man Getting Costume Changes: Creative Decision, or Marketing Scheme?

Recently it’s come to my attention that both Spider-Man and Superman have gotten new costumes. Regardless of their semi-permanence or not, the first thing that comes to my mind is always: Why? For Spider-Man, dude has had probably an entire closet full of costume changes, anything from the infamous (and creatively sound) Black Suit, to the stunningly forced and ugly Iron Spider suit from Civil War. You know, the one that was somehow bulletproof yet could be torn by glass. Superman on the other hand, seems to get a suit change every once in a while, until the editor who approved it realizes how stupid they were being and switches back to the iconic, perfect original suit.

Well anyhow, they’re at it again, this time Spider-Man gets a new suit for his debut in the brand new Spider-Man title, The Superior Spider-Man.

Picture via [Newsarama]

Spider-Man is pretty much the poster boy for superfluous suit changes. Every couple of years he seems to get a new suit change so I’m not surprised really. It’s no secret here at GB that I’m not the biggest Spider-Man fan, but even so I still have to say this new suit is just kinda weaksauce. It more or less seems the same, with the exception of a color palette swap, and maybe a few more minor changes that either aren’t visible or I haven’t noticed. At least with the Black Suit that was noticeably different, and worked on its own terms. On top of that, it had a good creative argument behind it. Spider-Man is inherently kind of stealthy character, and why would a guy like him wear such bright colors? Follow it up with the suits excellent reveal of actually being the living Symbiote that would create Venom, and you’ve got more than enough justification for a suit change. In that case, a writer had an idea that made sense, was new and interesting, and helped tell a good story. Time will tell as far as for the storyline implications of this new suit, but I don’t think it’d take much to successfully predict it’s not a fully creative decision. The new suit, the cancellation of Amazing Spider-Man and launch of this “Superior” Spider-Man, reeks of executive business decision. It looks and feels like something that was decided solely to try to get more readers and/or mainstream press about this sudden “new” suit change.

I think the problem with Spider-Man, in my opinion is that he’s a character ruled and governed with such executive care. Everything about him seems so obviously handled by a suit, making sure their cash cow isn’t somehow accidentally caught doing something original or daring. It’s the main reason why we keep getting endless origin stories of him, and sensationalist gimmick stories that don’t really do anything interesting. One More Day, his identity reveal/pro-reg siding in Civil War, and of course that most recent terrible movie, are all plagued by this. It’s one of the main reasons I hate costume changes in general, because it actively reminds me that the guys running these businesses, (and that’s what they are) are just trying to maintain IP security. Make sure people are talking about our character, no matter what! Any press is good press! Who cares if we color him in terrible red and gold and give him lots of useless extra limbs!

It’s like staring into a giant dumb lens flare. Or a J.J Abrams film. HEYOOOO.

But as much as I’d love to keep hating on Spider-Man all day, DC is also to blame for this same stupid tactic. In a lot of ways, Superman is victim to the same company paradigm that Spider-Man has. Protect the IP, raise character awareness, etc. The difference is, he generally gets far fewer costume changes, and due to his ironic modern lack of popularity, ends up with better stories. The people who writer Superman generally get to tell the stories they want to tell, and don’t have to follow any company mandates TOO hard, although occasionally you’ll end up with some real stinkers like the Superman Red/Blue outfits from years back. Of course, we’re talking about Superman’s most recent costume change, and really, it’s literally nothing we haven’t seen before.

Picture via [Newsarama]

Compare it the old black suit he wore from Return Of Superman, and a bunch of other things, and you’ll see it’s not a new design at all. They just added the red cape to it.

DC has always had trouble with Superman’s outfit in one way or another. It seems like every once in a while some idiot comes along and thinks they can improve it, or give him an outfit that will supersede the original in some way. As I mentioned earlier, the most egregious example of this is the Blue/Red suits, which were an embarrassment that DC and nearly all Superman fans would like to forget. So understand it brings me no pleasure to re-live this horrible outfit again by showing them here.

My eyes! The goggles do nothing!

Those costumes were from a TERRIBLE old storyline that involved Superman going into the sun, getting supercharged (whatever that means), and then needing the new suit to “contain” his powers. Then he split into two for… reasons. One was evil or something, and that’s about all I can remember before blood starts to violently leak from my nose and I pass out.

This isn’t the first time DC has made superfluous and needless costume changes. They did it very recently pre-New 52 with Wonder Woman, and gave her an idiotic, tacky 90’s jacket and some pants:

Damn the man!

Or the time they did that whole Azrael/Batman thing, after Knightfall happened:

But the thing is, we’ll keep getting new costume changes, because people will still buy the comics to see them, if only out of curiosity. We’ll have to deal with all of the slutty Invisible Women:

Stupid mohawk Storms: [Editor’s Note – Mohawk Storm was badass!]

And asinine Mr. Fixits:

Seriously, this happened. Hulk in a suit and fedora. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

Because it’s a tactic that works. Very rarely is there ever any true creative incentive to actually change a long-established character’s costume, and when there is, it’ll still be met with controversy, and likely sales no matter what. In terms of a gamble, it’s kind of no brainer, because if it’s good, it’ll sell and fans will like it. A good example is Carol Danvers AKA Ms. Marvel, who’s had plenty of costume changes as written about here on GB. She ended up with a new costume that fared far better than her original costume, and is now arguably more iconic and representative of her than the one she started with. However, if the costume is bad, you’ll end up with a Superman situation, where the book sells but it ends up damaging the character, and the whole thing is looked back on as a huge mistake. In the short-term though, it all generates sales, and this is the main problem with the whole costume changing concept. Executives will just demand a costume change any time they see sagging numbers, and short of actually trying to tell a good story, will simple implement a costume change to see those numbers go up. It doesn’t always have to be a costume change, sometimes it’s a gimmicky story element, but more often than not it is.

It’s easier to get an artist to draw up a new suit, print a couple thousand comics with him on the cover, animate the tv show with him in it, license the look to an action figure company, and switch back later when the heat dies down. For every Ms. Marvel, we’re gonna get 10 other totally craptastic costume changes we’ll have to live through. Such is the life of being a comics fan.

The Griz Bin: Gotham MadMen, Burton’s Avengers, Stan Lee is Iron Man and Batman’s Still a Dick

Today sees the return of The Griz Bin – a look of at the more random side to comics that has nothing (or at least not much) to do with films, TV or comic books themselves. And I’ve been given the keys! So hold tight as we look at toys, art, cosplay and general weirdness.
