Game Of Thrones: Season 3 Roundup Smorgasbord! New Trailers and Posters!

In the long wait for season 3 of Game Of Thrones two things have become abundantly clear. The first is that HBO is full of a bunch of sadists, who will leak images, previews, clips and trailers in rampant abundance, all with the terrible prospect of “getting you excited” to watch a season of a show you’re probably definitely made up your mind to watch or not. I’m convinced there isn’t a person alive who hasn’t already made up their mind to watch the third season when it comes on, because you’ve either watched the show, and CANNOT WAIT ANY LONGER HOLY CRAP, or you haven’t and thusly aren’t bothered. Accordingly, the other thing that’s become abundantly clear is how badly my editor loves to get me to write about all of HBO’s sadistic trappings, as if somehow not writing about every single little Game Of Thrones related pop up and mish-mash that comes by will actually personally hurt him and his feelings. [<– This is true.] Or his dog’s feelings or something. It’s gotten to the point where I’m afraid he’ll start sending me pictures of doe-eyed animals like those Sarah Mclachlan PETA commercials, telling me that by not writing up every GoT trailer I’m personally letting more and more kittens die each day. [<— Also True.]

So know that by writing this, I’m serving my role as a functioning member of society, and not letting lots of little kittens die for reasons I’ve made up entirely in my head. Mostly because waiting this long for Game Of Thrones is literally driving me insane. Firstly we have the bevy of trailers, starting with the newly released “Trailer #2” for the season, which by writing about here has saved a small black long-haired kitten named “Coco”. She loves to have her belly rubbed and only has one eye!

Next we have a shorter preview, similar to an older trailer I’ve probably written about, the difference is this time by writing about it I’m saving a little tortoiseshell kitten named Gidget. She’s a little timid but once you get to know her she’s very loving!

After that we have the “Extended” season 3 trailer, which is relatively similar to the other trailers only it has more stuff in it because it’s extended! In turn the kittens that are being saved by writing about this are also extended, a pair of brother/sister kittens named Scratches and Patches. They’re Calico and Russian blue, and utterly inseparable. Watching them play together is the bees knees! OR THE CAT’S PAJAMAS! HAHAHA!

And lastly after those three trailers we’re left a final 14 minute primer for season 3 of GoT, which is essentially just one big recap for everyone online who has a short attention span, or no time to sit down and re-watch the first two seasons. Which I suppose some people don’t have the time to do, but when you’re saving kittens every day is a special day of wonder and excitement that can only benefit from watching Game Of Thrones in the background! I watched this 14 minute primer with Larfleeze, a little orange tabby kitten I’ve named after the leader of the Orange Lanterns from DC Comics! Larfleeze loves Tyrion!

Now that all the kittens have been saved, it’s time to move onto the puppies! Yes, this IS the internet where cats reign supreme, but let us not shun the path of adorable puppies in our wake, because they surely need saving too. Also, my editor (and apparently other weird, stupid people) think that little tidbits like the next few things are cute and wonderful instead of annoying, soul crushing and pointless. Well onward, because there’s a corgi puppy who’s waiting at the door, and only by watching this inane High School Style Parody of Game Of Thrones will he not freeze to death in the cold! Winter is coming, Corgi puppy! Get in here!

Coming near the home stretch here, some band I’ve never heard of called The Hold Steady will be confirmed to perform a drinking song from the Game Of Thrones universe. It’s called “The Bear And The Maiden Fair”, but for the life of me I cannot remember it from the books. Which is all good and well because I’m sure I’ll skip or not notice it in the main show anyway. The only song that I care about is “The Rains Of Castemere”, but I can’t tell any of you why without being the most evil bastard ever. Fortunately, by writing about this I’ve saved a whole bundle of adorable pug puppies! They’re so spunky and full of love! Now here, watch a totally unrelated song by The Hold Steady that will hopefully convince you that their version of a make-believe song from a make-believe universe will sufficiently be believable enough to be consistent with that world as a viable drinking song! What’s that Pugsly? You want your tummy rubbed! Sure!

One last thing! Now that you’ve seen every possible Game Of Thrones related video and even a few that are only tangentially related, there are PICTURES TO LOOK AT! WONDEROUS PICTURES! Pictures of the same characters you’ve seen before looking at things! In fact the only one even worth seeing is the comparison picture between Bran from season 1 and Season 3, because apparently time is linear and people age? Also puberty? Also I’m dying inside? Whatever, I’ve just saved a cuddly little bulldog named Francis! He’s named after the Pope and he snores when he sleeps! Just like the real Pope!

And finally here’s a picture of Isaac Hempstead Wright, who is apparently now forcing his life as Bran onto other people in the real world. Proving that Game Of Thrones induced insanity is a real thing. He can’t not make everyone Hodor to him now.
Game of Thrones

Well there you have it. That’s all of the little annoying Game Of Thrones tidbits, previews, songs, trailers, pictures, previews of pictures, trailer-views, tidpics, pre trailers, songtures, trailpics, picture previews and everything else in between for Game Of Thrones. Which if you didn’t know for some impossible reason, starts up again this month on March 31st. In 2013. Unfortunately all of this is a cycle, and will repeat yet again for Season 4 next year. Now don’t mind me while I start petting all of these kittens and puppies to stave off my lingering, throbbing insanity that looms in anticipation of the anticipation of waiting for Season 4. Now play puppies and kittens!

At Long Last! The Season 3 Trailer For ‘Game of Thrones’ is Here!

This is it, the last month before Season 3 of Game Of Thrones premieres, and with it hopefully there an end to the updates, previews, snapshots, preview pics, and other ultimately meaningless little teasers. We’re now hitting the home stretch and that is officially marked by the long-awaited full trailer to Season 3. A trailer I had been waiting for not only because holy crap am I tired of looking at or writing about set pics, but because it gives us (me) a glimpse at how they’ve further adapted the books. Show only fans of course, will get a glorious preview of the King Beyond The Wall, and most obviously, GODDAMNED DRAGONS! Book fans will see other little things they’re familiar with, and revel in the endless amount of terrible, awful things they’ll be waiting to watch their Show Only fans to see in due time. Or if you’re like me, you’ll tease them with fake spoilers about the show and watch as their jaws drop in disbelief/hatred. It’s hilarious!

Well, aside from being incredibly short, the trailer does show a few things I recognize from the books, and as the series has progressed away from the books, a few things I don’t recognize at all. Though I suppose that could be my fading memory. The bummer about this is it’s being interpreted as the “first” trailer for Season 3, so this means there will be more soon coming. Of course there will be, why shouldn’t there? It’ll keep going on and on until the show starts, and then it’ll be replaced by speculation endlessly about what the show will be doing to adapt, or change its source material, until the season ends. Then it’ll be replaced by more teasers and updates endlessly for the next season ON AND ON OH GOD MAKE IT STOP I JUST WANT TO WATCH IT ALL RIGHT NOW.

Is it bad thing if a one minute trailer for a TV show drives you to the brink of madness? Probably right? Probably.

Game Of Thrones: S3 – New Stills and Only 53 More Days to Wait!

Let’s be honest here, you’re probably as sick of reading little tidbits about Season 3 of Game Of Thrones as I am about writing them. We both just want the show to come back on, for all of us to watch it, and depending on how many of the books you’ve read, bitch about the differences, lack of characters, inclusion of characters, the similarities, and everything else in between. It’s an agonizing wait that’s certainly not made any easier by these pitiful little teaser photos that HBO keeps putting out every few weeks, just looking to drag us back in bit by bit until we can’t take it anymore. I suppose in that regard it’s a good strategy, since if I was catching up on the show and knew it was coming back on TV soon, I’d be ordering my HBO subscription right this minute.

It stands to reason if you’re reading this you’ve got some cursory knowledge or interest in the show, and thusly are prepared in some fashion for the idea that there are spoilers, and while these photos aren’t necessarily spoilers per se, some people are extra super sensitive about that sort of thing and just can’t take knowing ANYTHING about the show coming up at all. That being said, the photos are of particular interest to those who’ve read the books, as some characters are showing up that I certainly would have thought were being cut. The Reeds for instance are particularly surprising, since Osha seems to be so far fulfilling their role in the series, but either way Bran getting the info on his green dreams is something I’ve long looked forward to see in the series.

Then of course there’s the entire character progression of Lord Beric Dondarrion, along with Thoros of Myr, who book readers will know play a small but incredibly significant role in the evolution of… let’s say the nature of the world in Game Of Thrones. I don’t want to spoil anything, but lets just say that the world changes pretty dramatically from Book 1 to Book 5, and I don’t just mean Whitewalkers and dragons. But I digress. Fans here should be excited to find out who these characters are, or look forward to seeing them be portrayed excellently, (or poorly, depending if you have bad opinions or not) by the good folks working for HBO. All I can say is, PUT THE DAMN SHOW ON TV ALREADY YOU’RE KILLING ME.

Below is a slideshow with 22 photos from the new season, enjoy.

‘Game of Thrones’ Spoiler Free Updates: I’ll Drink to That!

We are all going to have to wait until the end of March before HBO’s Game of Thrones season three make it’s way into your living room but we don’t have to wait that long to open our early GoT Christmas gifts.

First up we get a nice little interview on the Jimmy Kimmel show from everybody’s favorite stormborn, Daenerys Targaryen ie. Emilia Clarke. It wasn’t surprising to learn that Emilia is really a brunette with a British accent, but it is truly impressive that they manage to get those long platinum locks to look so natural by using a wig. Altogether the interview isn’t that compelling, but she does reveal to those who haven’t read the series that Danny gets a little bad ass in season three which is an understatement by a long shot. Think Marcellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction except times really are Medieval (sort of).

Secondly we get some more non-spoiler type news about the upcoming season from EW.com, namely that the third seasons episodes will be slightly longer, including an extra long season finale. This will make the GoT 10-episode season seem more like an 11-episode season as far as actual screen time is concerned. It also seems that the episodes will be getting a more thorough treatment if you read into another comment from the aforementioned article. The article alludes to the fact that the writers are dealing with roughly the first half of A Storm of Swords which would be a change from the first two season that pretty much ended at the same place as the books. This actually make perfect sense as there is a great cliff hanger about 2/3 of the way through Storms and for those of you who thought the end of season one was surprising… you ain’t seen nothing yet!

What I’m most excited for believe it or not, other than the actual season, is the release of the GoT “Iron Throne” beer! What makes this especially exciting is that this isn’t some money-grabbing, HBO-promoting, fan-abusing beer release (OK maybe a little) because Ommegang, as beer lovers out there know, is a legit craft brewery who make a quality product. The beer is set to be released in March, just in time to crack one open as you sit back and watch the season three opening episode, so I guess there will be some cross promoting after all.

Game Of Thrones Season 3 Update: Mance Rayder In The House!

It has been, and is going to be – a long wait until Season 3 of Game of Thrones premieres. In that meantime I’m stuck with the terrible debacle between hating having to wait, and loving the speculation, hints, teasers and every other little tidbit of information leaked in between about the third season. It’s what I call Lost syndrome. Back when Lost was on TV, all I ever wanted was to keep watching, to find out what was going to happen next, and hated the agonizing wait in between weeks of the show, and the truly excruciating wait in between seasons. Now that it’s all over with, I find myself missing all of that time spent in between seasons, wildly speculating on what would happen next, forming bizarre, out there theories, or just plain being baffled and wondering what the hell else could happen.

Game Of Thrones is like this in a way, only there’s a bunch of books with the spoilers right there in them, just waiting there, tempting me. I gave in for the third season/book, and now am stuck in a rock and a hard place between wanting the show to be fresh to me, and desperately wanting to continue the story right here, right now. So believe me when I say that little featurettes about the making of the show, tend to be particularly difficult for me to watch, knowing what’s coming up, and simultaneously NOT knowing what’s coming up. I’m envious of those who haven’t read any of the books and just watch the show, and I’m envious of those who have read all the books, and get to enjoy all of the show-watchers’ reactions. For me it’s a little private hell where I have to compromise between my love of over analyzation, and my impatience. For the rest of you who are in either camp that I’m not in, I’m sure this featurette will bring you lots of joy.

Ciarin Hinds: The King Beyond The Wall aka Mance Rayder

One of the more interesting things aside from that featurette, is the casting of a crucial character only spoken about as of yet in the series, that book readers will no doubt know. That would be the role of Mance Rayder, The King Beyond The Wall.

Playing him is the pretty excellent character actor Ciarin Hinds, who you may be more familiar with from his work than his name. He played Caeser in Rome, Dumbledore’s brother in Harry Potter, and his finest work yet was his role as The Devil in Ghost Rider 2. In no way am I knocking him for that, because that movie was awesome, [No it wasn’t] and he was awesome in it [Yes he was].

While I did imagine Mance Rayder a bit younger in the books, it’s certainly a role I can see him be great in.  Now pardon me while I eagerly hate/love waiting for Season 3.

Game Of Thrones: Updates – Season 3 Teaser & Photos! Plus Season 2 Blu-Ray Details…

Being a Game Of Thrones fan has been pretty exciting for the last few years. It’s not often that an epic, sprawling, complex fantasy series is adapted near perfectly into a TV show that transcends its initial fandom. I, like many other fans, had only tangentially heard about the Song Of Ice & Fire book series in passing, up until news of it being adapted into a TV show started to surface. Having been a staunch Hard SF advocate most of my life, fantasy fiction was something that never quite held my interest, but I decided to give the first book a go. I quickly found myself really wrapped up in it, and started watching the show while reading the book in tandem. A few weeks later the first season ended, and I found myself addicted to the novels, and read right through and up until the third.

I’ve since finished the third book, and I’ve found myself at a curious standstill, unable to continue. Watching the second season was a curious experiment, as I found myself noticing what was changed or different, rather than just sitting back and enjoying the show. Since A Storm of Swords was such a captivating book, I plan these next two seasons to be the last I spend, with foreknowledge of the novels. I’d rather be surprised by what’s happening in the show, and read the book later, and have it act as a sort of “extended directors cut” version of the story. I have books 4, 5 & 6, but for now I’m content to let them sit on the shelf, until season 4.

Well lately it seems like progress is rolling along for season 3 of the show, which will be adapting A Storm Of Swords, what is considered by fans the best entry in the A Song Of Ice and Fire series. It’s considerable length will come into factor and end up being split into 2 seasons for the show, meaning season 4 will still be events from ASoS. The sad thing is, all we have to go on right now are some meager set photos. HBO is keeping a tight ship on this season, and for good reason, as this season is packing most of the bigger wallops from the books into it, and will assuredly floor fans of the show who haven’t read the books. Everyone else who has, will get to enjoy all of their friends reactions to the twists and turns of the story, and be surprised by what new changes are made….

So while these aren’t the most exciting set photos on the planet, at this point any details of the show I’m ready to gobble up. I’m anxious to see my favorite scenes from ASoS onscreen, and even more antsy to see how horrified my friends reactions will be to what happens this season. In the future, I’m hoping we’ll get some better promo materials, or far more revealing set photos to speculate on. For now, we’ll just have to wait patiently and live with this teaser…

One last thing: For those who are looking to whet their GoT appetites, you’ll be happy to know the DVD/Blu-ray of Season 2 is now available for pre-order. As usual it’s packed with extras, bells, whistles, and comes in a delightful box to hold it in. The good folks over at [IGN] have the full list of extras:

Blu-ray with HBO Select – includes all DVD features plus:

  • War of the Five Kings – Track the claims, strategies and key players involved in the battle for the Iron Throne with this interactive guide that follows the movements of various armies detailing their victories and defeats.
  • Histories & Lore – 19 animated histories detailing the mythology of Westeros and Essos as told from the varying perspectives of the characters themselves and featuring, in-part, illustrations from Game of Thrones storyboard artist Will Simpson.

Audio Commentaries – 12 commentaries with cast and crew including David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, George R.R. Martin, Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington and more.

The best thing out of all of those has got to be the audio commentaries. I remember being disappointed by the limited commentaries for the blu-ray of season 1, and wishing there were more. I can’t wait to marathon the first 2 seasons in preparation for season 3.
