Penny Dreadful: Season Two Trailer – When Lucifer Fell

In the first season of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, horror fans were treated to familiar characters like Van Helsing, Victor Frankenstein and Dorian Gray, shown in the gothic settings of Victorian London. The melding of classic literary characters, and the strength of a cast that included Timothy Dalton (Hot Fuzz), Josh Hartnett (Sin City) and was headlined by Eva Green (Casino Royale), was enough to bring Showtime around 5 million viewers a week across all platforms. That’s rather respectable.

Now, in preparation for the upcoming sophomore season, the cable network has released a trailer featuring the show’s new lead adversary, Madame Kali. Played by Harry Potter alum Helen McCrory, fans should remember the character from her two appearances last season. First in the show’s second episode, Séance, which is arguably one of the strongest hours from season one, and then again in the first season finale Grand Guignol.

The trailer depicts Madame Kali in a bath of blood, and our much maligned heroine Vanessa Ives (Green) dropping a rather ominous quote; “When Lucifer fell, he did not fall alone.” This whole trailer is oozing with dark foreshadowing that is not likely to see things end happily for our protagonists.

In addition to the return of our main cast from last season, this promo also gives us a look at some new comers, one in the form of an apparent blind girl, dancing with Caliban, but not giving the off the sense she is to be trusted. And the other a man with a half mask, presumably to cover a scared face. The Phantom of the Opera perhaps? We’ll just have to wait till the new season starts to know for sure.
