The Nice Guys Channel the Spirit of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for Noir Feature

Equanimity – The quality of be calm, even-tempered; composure.

The new trailer for the Ryan Gosling (Baby Goose!) and Russell Crowe noir/comedy/thriller The Nice Guys, which was written and directed by Shane Black, is here in all of its Red Band Glory!

With the first dialogue spoken in , we learn the definition of the word equanimity. It’s a practice that Crowe’s character seems to be working on. And the fact he’s using a ‘word of the day’ calendar further shows he’s working on more than just that. Muscle for hire, it would seem he wants to better himself. Gosling appears to be a single dad, working as a PI to care for his daughter, who isn’t too versed in the more violent side of the business. The two men come together to find and protect a missing girl named Amelia (Margaret Qualley) after being hired by her mother, played by Kim Basinger.

You may remember Kim Basinger once won an Oscar acting opposite Russell Crowe…

While the trailer was good, the thing that most excites me about this movie is the man behind it. Shane Black’s resume reads like a transcript of my childhood movie viewing. He was in Predator, and he wrote Lethal Weapon, The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, and The Long Kiss Goodnight to name a few. Of course as a kid I didn’t know that the same guy had his hand in so many of my favorite movies, but that realization came in college, when he got into the director’s chair for 2005’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, easily one of my favorite movies of the decade. Now Iron Man 3 wasn’t great, but it seems he’s going back to what worked for him before, and from the looks of it – it’s working again.
