One batch, two batch, penny and dime.
So after the rousing success that was Daredevil’s second season, it seemed that the announcement of a Frank Castle led spinoff was only a matter of time. Especially given the overwhelmingly positive reactions to Jon Bernthal.
Jon Bernthal won fans over both on and off screen, not only with his impressive portrayal of the character, but the way the actor has embraced the mythology as well.
Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb had this to say in a statement:
“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil.’ Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”
Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content added:
“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot.”
Executive Producer and Showrunner, Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) went on to say:
“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world. After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”
This is the sixth show that Marvel and NetFlix has announced. Daredevil and Jessica Jones are already up and running, Luke Cage and Iron Fist are coming up next, and then The Defenders is set to combine them all. The Punisher, one could assume will join the team for that series. No word yet one exactly where it will fit into the current lineup.
