Comic-Con Cosplay Gallery: Milla Goldenberg and The Con Through Her Lens…

So last week was the international Comic Con in San Diego, and I (Dr. Kronner) was lucky enough to attend for the 2nd year in a row. As per usual of these types of events, there were plenty of people turned out in their best Comic-Con cosplay. In tow was my assistant good friend; New York Times published writer, Geek Magazine Copy Editor, and shutterbug Milla Goldenberg.

With her, as always was a camera, and what follows is a small portion of the massive amount of the photographic evidence that she (or at least her camera) was presented with on the convention floor. Everything from scantily clad ladies in their best Wonder Woman getup and shirtless dudes as their favorite superheroes.

It needs very little introduction… a gallery of Comic-Con cosplay!

Drew: The Man Behind the Poster – Drew Struzan Finally Gets Some Well Deserved Credit

Drew Struzan is a man at first glance you will probably not recognise. But as soon as his pencil hits paper he becomes instantly recognisable. This is the man that has been responsible for some of the greatest poster art seen in movies today. Newer fans will know his work on the Harry Potter movies while 80s fans will know him for his art on the time travel classic Back to the Future or the posters showing the wacky bunch from Police Academy. Most people will probably know him as the guy that gave us the iconic covers for some of George Lucas best work mainly Indiana Jones and the Star Wars movies. Looks like Drew is finally going to be in the spot light himself with this new documentary, Drew: The Man Behind the Poster the trailer of which has just hit YouTube and which you can watch below.

“He’s part of the movie going experience” is the key quote (among many in this trailer) that really sums up the joy of seeing Drew’s work. It is great to watch so many talented and interesting people in the film and entertainment industry gush over how incredible his art is and the most important thing to come out of this trailer is the fact that his work creates feelings among those that see it. The fun thing about this trailer is just that, the fun of it all. Drew seems to be a very laid back individual and being a master of his craft has not made him big headed about it. Another element which I cannot wait to see more of is how he actually creates these pieces.

The thing that I always liked about his artwork other than the fact it is incredibly detailed is that he is still going strong and representing a bygone era of film advertising where pretty much every film had some painted artwork to represent it. With most of today’s releases even getting the Photoshop treatment or a poorly devised photo shoot design it’s a refreshing change to still see Drew create these incredible pieces that capture the magic of cinema. This is the kind of thing that got my bum into a seat in the cinema and it attracted me to take VHS out in my youth. Drew is still one of the best artists of this style of artwork out there and it is great to see a documentary made on his work.

If you like what you have seen and cannot wait for this documentary to come out then why not check out his website HERE  where tons of his work is up for sale or even splash out and buy his art book from HERE . If you are lucky enough to be at the San Diego Comic Con then you can see this documentary debut on July 19th. Otherwise you can wait until its official release on August 16th in New York and then other cinemas to follow (thanks to FIRST SHOWING for that information). Hopefully the documentary will live up to the fascinating trailer. This reviewer will certainly be keeping his fingers crossed for this to be the case.

CCI 2012: Banner Poster Impressions!

It’s nerd Mecca time, and this year the bevy of posters, trailers, previews, easter eggs and all the other little tidbits in between are being analyzed by every single person who isn’t at CCI, while everyone who is there ignores them while waiting in line for their Hall H panel. Having been to SDCC twice before, I can attest that it truly is the spectacle people make it out to be, and is one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have, that is also extremely horrible at the same time. But I digress, because you’re not here to read what I think about the Con itself, you’re here to look at the juicy, juicy posters and coverage of the event! So let me transport you there for a moment with a collection of the posters themselves, which I believe are mostly self evident of their awesomeness, but I’ll talk about them anyway.

I’m totally stoked to see how The Evil Dead remake is gonna be. I like the use of the original font, and the inclusion of the #Necronomicon is a nice touch that echoes the poor idea of reading the books pages aloud, only now it’s on social media. I’d like to think that was a clever marketing decision on purpose, but even if it isn’t, I’m digging it. Check out our previous coverage of the movie here.

Here’s the complete banner. Spring 2013! Awesome.

Of course GoT is there reppin’ themselves rightly. Season 3 is gonna make everyone shit bricks. Can’t wait.

I was a huge fan of District 9, and remember being intrigued by the viral marketing for the movie they had at the 2008 SDCC, and after seeing it in theaters, Neill Blomkamp cemented himself as a visionary director to keep your eye on. His new project here, looks fascinating. Read our previous coverage here.

I didn’t even know they were remaking this. Reading about it though, seems it’ll be an interesting remake, as Kimberly Peirce is directing. She’s best known for Boys Don’t Cry, and her work on The L Word, which means she knows how to direct stories about women, and messed up relationships.

What can I say about this movie it’s awesome trailer already doesn’t? Joseph Gordon-Levitt has yet to be in a bad film, and Bruce Willis is Bruce Willis. Plus it’s directed by the guy who did Brick, which also starred JGL. Seriously, go see Brick if you haven’t already. Time travel, guns, JGL, Bruce Willis, what more could you want?

I am not familiar with this show, but the banner makes me laugh. The use of internet memes becoming legitimate marketing ploys is so strangely recursive it almost works.

Seeing these banners makes me wish I was there at Comic-Con International, but then I remind myself a bottle of water there is 6 goddamned dollars and am glad I’m not there. BUT if you wish you were, you can find more CCI related coverage right here! On Grizzly Bomb! The site you’re reading right now! YAY!

The Walking Dead: Comic-Con, Characters and More!

The Walking Dead Goes to Comic-Con 2o12:

The Walking Dead has some very talented makeup effects artists. Every episode of that show has had moments that were almost too realistic and gruesome even for me, a seasoned zombie lover. Greg Nicotero, co-founder of KNB EFX, is one of the reasons I love the Walking Dead. According to FearNet, Nicotero and his KNB teammates will be sharing their delightful talent with the San Diego Comic-Con this year! Comic-Con, as I am sure you already know, is going to have “The Walking Dead Escape: San Diego” where zombie fans can be a survivor, a walker, or a spectator. KNB EFX and Nicotero are going to be providing the zombies!

I first heard about the Walking Dead Escape about a month ago, and I have been furious ever since because I will not be there! It does make for some pretty amazing daydreams, though. And now, I can add to those glorious fantasies the graphically gross flesh-biting walkers that will sure litter this obstacle course.

A Strange Addition to Season 3:

According to Left Hand Horror, Merle Dixon, Daryl’s brother, will be joining the cast in Season 3. We know that in Season 1, Merle was left handcuffed to the roof of a building, and when Rick and the group went back to get him, he was gone. Merle had cut his hand off to escape the handcuffs before he became zombie food, and cauterised the wound with a bunsen burner. Merle will possibly be joining the governor while the group gets to the prison.

The Walking Dead – The Official Magazine:

Can’t keep up with all of the Walking Dead news? Never fear, the Walking Dead magazine is here! According to FearNet, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman calls the magazine “your one stop destination for all the news pertaining to the comic, TV show, video game, toys, games, and whatever else exists in the ever-expanding Walking Dead universe!”.

The magazine will debut on Newsstands and at specialty comic book stores on October 23rd.

The Governor:

Fans of the Walking Dead are all anxiously awaiting the premiere of the governor, played by David Morrissey. The character, in the comics, leads a survivor settlement called the Woodbury. It is a toss-up, which character fans are looking more forward to seeing in Season 3: Michonne  or the Governor. Looking at Collider, Robert Kirkman said this about bringing the Governor to the small screen: “Seeing The Walking Dead come to life on AMC has been a real thrill for me, obviously, and moving into Season 3 I’m even more excited than ever because now I feel like we’re really getting to ‘the good stuff.  Having The Governor in the mix is going to fundamentally change the show in all kinds of awesome and exiting ways. And David Morrissey totally rocks!”. Kirkman also says that the Governor’s character will not be watered down for television, so for fans of the comics not to worry.

The Walking Dead Video Game:

The Walking Dead has been adapted into a video game. Episode 1 of the 5-Episode series of games is already out. Episode 2 “Starved for Help” became available June 29th. According to FearNet the episodes of The Walking Dead video game are available through the Xbox live as DLC for 400 Microsoft points. For more information, visit Telltale’s Website.

Behind the Scenes:

AMC’s new video blog post has an inside look at behind-the-scenes material for The Walking Dead. Check it out:

The Walking Dead will premiere Season 3 this October. AMC will have a Season 3 preview on July 7-8th.
