After the brilliance of last week, I was completely underwhelmed by what I was served during this most recent of episodes.
Sookie’s faerie powers are getting ridiculous. Now apparently she can read the thoughts of dead people? It’s too much. It’s too weird. And who is this creepy new vampire that killed her parents? The Scarecrow from Batman Begins? Seems like he’d be pretty cool to have on the show as more than just a memory, so let’s hope we meet him for real.
It just wouldn’t be True Blood if we didn’t open with someone’s blood everywhere. This time it’s Roman’s; and his absence creates quite an upheaval at the Authority headquarters. It’s fascinating how much humanity remains in these vampires.
As soon as one strong figure-head is removed from the picture, how quickly we can all jump on board with another, even if their principles and ideals could not be more different. Most people want someone at the helm leading them through life more than they want to stand up for what they believe is right.
Summer time is right around the corner, and so is the premier of the 5th season of HBO’s True Blood. We’ve covered some of what we know about season five, let’s get caught up to speed on the rest of what we can expect!
Tonight after the season finale of Game of Thrones, we were given an extended sneak peek of the upcoming season of True Blood! This was the first 8 minutes (we had previously seen the first three) of the premiere, which will air next week on HBO. Here’s the video if you missed it:
SPOILERS AHEAD…
THANK GOD we got the rest of this preview. I don’t know how ‘Grandpa Lumbergh’ lasted 20 years in fairy land, I could hardly stomach three minutes.
Anyway, after Sookie and her grandfather get reunited, Sookie starts to get glimpses of her surroundings that lead her to believe that things are not all that they seem. She uses her mind to tell her grandfather that they need to escape, that they are not safe there. This is always a neat little trick on Earth, where 1 in 2,542,698 people is a telepath. Sookie forgets, however, that she is in fairy land where mind reading is something everyone can do; so naturally, everyone hears her. We are then introduced to what I assume to be the Queen of the Fairies, who appears less than thrilled with Sookie and her refusal to take anything at face value.
By now, we’ve deduced along with Sookie that this fairy land is not all that it seems, and that this light fruit is responsible for making everything more beautiful. This Fairy Queen informs Sookie that because Bill came to the fairy land allegedly searching for more fairy blood to drink, the fairy race is no longer safe. As a result, all the fairies and humans with fairy descendants must be sealed off in this other realm, which looks a lot less appealing when you’re not tripping on fairy fruit.
Naturally, Sookie tries to escape; but is chased down by the fairies, who now look like trolls and can shoot purple lasers from their hands. The brother of Sookie’s “fairy godmother” (I guess that would make him her “fairy goduncle“) helps her and Lumbergh escape by talking them off a cliff, which is a portal that will take them home if they jump in before the crazy Fairy Queen seals it off.
Pretty weird. I’m honestly still on the fence about all this. Some of the previews of the new season get me really excited. Others tend to make me really nervous. Naturally, the scenes that get me the most excited are the ones that focus on the vampires, which I think are the lifeblood (pun intended) of the show. I would like to see more focus on the vampires, considering they are the center of the premise of the series. All this nonsense with fairies and witches and werewolves and shapeshifters gets stale.
Again, only time will tell what’s in store on True Blood. As long as there’s gore and intrigue, I’m on board. HBO doesn’t usually disappoint!
Tell us your thoughts in the comments – what are you most looking forward to, or dreading in the upcoming season?
In the wake of Harold Camping‘s second failed rapture attempt, we can focus on something new and important to go on living for. Something right inside our television sets. No, I’m not talking about Paula Abdul’s return to the small screen. I’m not talking about Ashton Kutcher replacing Charlie Sheen to keep the dumbest show in history on the air. I’m not even talking about the much-anticipated third season of Teen Mom. I can only be speaking of one thing: Season Four of True Blood, HBO’s best vampire show! A new promo trailer was released for the upcoming season, and I have some things to say about it.
In 1971 Director Sam Peckinpah released a movie called Straw Dogs. It was based off of the novel The Siege of Trencher’s Farm, written in 1969 by Gordon Williams. The film sparked controversy with concerns over the rise of violence in film. It didn’t help that it came out the same year as movies like A Clockwork Orange, The French Connection, and Dirty Harry, which all received similar criticism. In today’s film world, filled with stylized violence and gratuitous bloodshed, it’s surprising how well this actually holds up.
The movie was a story about David Sumner, an American intellectual (Dustin Hoffman) who moves with his wife Amy (Susan George), back to her hometown in England. Once there he becomes enamored with his work and she gets bored. She starts to flirt with some of the locals they’ve hired to fix up there house, one of which is an old boyfriend of hers. The men see Dave as a coward and start to push him bit by bit until things escalate out of control…
This movie was my first introduction to Sam Peckinpah back when I watched in High School and still my favorite of his films. It gets down to base of what a man is capable of when forced into a bad situation.
Well the movie is now being remade by someone with decidedly less pedigree, but not a terrible track record – Film Critic turned Director Rod Lurie who is most famous for The Contender. Cast in the leads are titans of mediocrity, repaired for some reason after Superman Returns, James Marsden and Kate Bosworth. And quite frankly, I just don’t think they have the acting chops of Hoffman and Susan George.
What is interesting though is the cast that surrounds them, namely our villain – Alexander Skarsgård, who is best know to True Blood fans as the Vampire Sheriff Eric Northman. For me, he is the most likeable part of True Blood (Well, aside from Deborah Ann Woll anyway —> ).
Here is the new trailer…
Ok, so OBVIOUSLY it doesn’t look as epic as the original. It’s no longer set in rural countryside England, but now instead in “Small Town USA”, where there is never a shortage of rednecks and idiots. However, 2 of the best cast pieces aren’t even shown in the trailer, and that’s James Woods (Casino, The Hard Way, Cat’s Eye) and Boyd Crowder Walton Goggins(The Shield, Predators, Justified).
Also appearing will be Prison Break’sDominic Purcell and recently unemployed star of The Chicago Code, as well as another ‘Gone too Soon’ type of show The Black Donnelys, Billy Lush. Overall, cast looks good even if Cyclopsthe kid from Disturbing Behavior Marsden isn’t my favorite actor, he’s not terrible.
I have no doubt this will pale in comparison with the original, but I’m pretty sure I’ll see it anyhow. It is set for a US release September 16th of this year.
